It appears that Blizzard servers are once again suffering from a DDoS attack that began at approximately 5:00 am Pacific / 8:00 am Eastern. It is unclear how many of the company's titles are affected, though Blizzard acknowledged "multiple titles".

Ah we have so much power and this is what we do with it. I remember growing up and could not even fathom a game like WOW. Fast forward now I'm 35. So many things have changed and yet our reaction to those changes have not. Hopefully Bliz. can get this under control and perhaps have some way of locating these people. Not sure why they are doing it I guess just to be noticed or on a whim. Reminds me of PVP in a way, when people advocate for the right to have it only for those select people who abuse the system.

Honestly, this is getting a bit sad.  I can almost see DDoSing something like Facebook in protest of a privacy policy change or something of that nature, but these are gamers hurting gamers for no reason other than for the shiggles.  Do these attacks actually gain anyone anything or are the guys responsible the same ones that had sex with my mom on XBox Live?

To be expected honestly. They suffered loads of attacks around WoD's release so this isn't a surprise.

Ah, OK, so it's "justified" and "acceptable" to DDoS targets you don't like, but there's "no reason" to attack Blizzard ? :D

DDoS attacks are simply economic terrorism, and it will eventually be treated like that. Massive DDoS attacks affect more than just the servers they are specifically targeting.

Let me rephrase.  I never said it was justified.  I meant I can understand the mindset and the motivation of someone that would DDoS in protest of a real issue, such as invasion of privacy or child pornography.

I'm puzzled how it is in this day & age with all the technological advances that are available to Blizzard why this can even happen.  I can't even get the WOW forums to load. They've basically been shut down.  Sad.

You sure it wasn't the downtime? http://us.battle.net/forums/en/wow/topic/20748506735

We will be performing scheduled maintenance beginning on Tuesday, August 23rd, 5:00 AM (PDT) and we expect the service to be available again at approximately 6:00 AM (PDT). During this time the game will be unavailable for play.

Please follow @BlizzardCS on Twitter for further updates.

Just saying as your article says it supposedly happened when the downtime was scheduled for.

Seems its ongoing. I get disconnected after character screen across multiple servers. I can't get their WOW forums to load at battle-net.

I am able to get on their forums with no issues been there since the last time I posted in this thread. There is no posts about a DDOS attack there. Will log into the game and see if any issues logging in.

I see the script kiddies are bored again. Shouldn't they be in school. I say be in school because no mature adult would find this funny in anyway. Though, I realize it is probably some adults somewhere that think they are the greatest "hackers" ever.

Personally wish they would find all the bastards responsible for this and toss them in jail for a while. Maybe a couple DDoS attacks to their ass would make them think twice before doing it again.

The problem is finding the attackers, botnets are easy to rent. They are also dirt cheap, and you can literally pay, select a game from a drop down menu, select a server you want to ddos and click GO.

Zero programing required, your grandmother could ddos any game - it's that easy.

The second problem is even if you manage to find them and realize that they are in some foreign country that won't go after them, who will throw them in jail? Some imaginary anti ddos world police?

Here is a real example from an unnamed company and a pretty large ddos attack, they traced the botnets from a honeypot and found the attack originated from a slum in Brazil, guess what the local authorities said - yeah it was pretty much - f off we have other actual life and death crimes to address.

If I was Blizzard and the DDoS attack was being perpetrated in a country like Brazil. All I would do is dangle a little green in front of the local authorities face and the police would breaking down doors with their assault rifles a blazing.

Its very easy to work with these countries you just have to communicate in the universal language.

Game and forums work perfectly for me so I don't think it's a ddos

Yeah I think it was something internal on their part. They were just shutting down the servers and then suddenly canceled the shutdown which tells me they found out what the issue was.

I don't think that necessarily means it wasn't a ddos though, they definitely said that they were being ddos'd or at least that their network provider was. It just looks like it either caused a bunch of issues when they tried to do something about it, or the servers got all messed up. Because it's only certain servers and it looks like the error 132 is happening, but they found a workaround? I don't know it looks like everything just blew up in their face.
