228 hours on steam and I'm still downloading mods and playing it.  Honestly I can't believe how good this game is.

One of the best games ever. One of the best modding communities also. Even the original is great. I played the hell out of the Last Days LOTR mod. What a great mod.

Well i think past has  shown us that you either love or hate pvp.
I have played Mount n Blade and did not find it to be very good.
The game or i mean mod...dlc's, i see have been free all weekend on Steam.

I need FULL game experiences now a days,i can no longer get excited by simple ideas like pvp or space ships,or a Dragon etc etc,so i might take a peek since is free trial to see what it offers.
mounted pvp really does not appeal to me but will see.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

What do you like most about it? I have never played it
You are a soldier who fights alongside your army.  There's so much to do you can overthrow kings or help promote kings or become a king yourself.  Become a bandit or run trade routes.  You level up and your soldiers level up with different trees to take from archers, knights, footsoldiers, spearmen ect...

Then there's modding community with tons of mods that turn the game into basically anything someone can imagine.  They even have online mods for persistant world and such but I never got into those.  You also get companions who can fight each other and the sorts.  Can marry one of them or marry some noble's daughter.  A lot of sandbox elements.  Then when you capture a town or castle you can build additions to it.

I'd suggest just playing Warband native at first and once you are bored move on to one of the mods maybe Floris Extended or something.

pffft light weight I have 1860 hours on steam, but its pretty much all accumulated from playing the cRPG mod ;p. Now that crpg has "died" have been playing native multiplayer more. Never really played the single player.

For those that liked crpg the mods devs have their own game going- Of Kings and Men, they are running an open beta starting 8-15-16 8pm UK time for gamescon, it will be up for a few days and its open to all no game purchase needed.

Both. It has a single player campaign as well as multiplayer. You can play just the pve campaign  or  join a  server and play against others in skirmish battles. There is no multiplayer campaign.

Is just the basic Warband good enough to get started? Or do I really need the collection to have the most fun right away?
All you need is basic Mount & Blade Warband to play it. The mods are free. Theres always a $5 Warband sale on every major steam sale and sometimes in between.

Yeah you don't need the expansions but they are great. But to be honest the  top mods for this game are just as good or better.

Actually the mod team that made Brytenwalda (one of Warbands best mods), actually made the Viking Conquest expansion which is  really good, now that it has been patched. It was a buggy mess when it came out. Has some cool features like Naval Warfare, and it's Vikings! Rawrrrrrr!

If you're a big Game of Thrones fan,   The "A Clash of Kings" mod is awesome.

Alright,  enthusiasm in this thread convinced me to go and try this game. It keeps popping on my radar.

Sieges are my personal reason for sticking for a long ass time with the game.

That and the combat is really rewarding.

For me its a lot of fun trying to fight in the middle of my troops and stay alive at the same time.  Or even harder is being a soldier in a noble's army and trying to stay alive while the noble is ordering the troops.  Also joining a large 500 man battle and you don't controll all the troops.  Yea staying alive in those kinds of battles are fun.

Its giving me a story to follow.  Which is kinda cool and trying to collect enough vanyrian daggers to forge a sword.  And its like everything from the GOT series mixed in.  Carefull with story quests they can be tricky because not many wiki's and you can easily not know where to go.

Oh yea one of my most memorable times was trying to break my companions out of prison because they had been captured.

It's also very challenging when you attempt to free a lord from a prison since you are not with your real gear but ragged clothes and a wooden stick against soldiers in real armor and weapons.

Ranged in my opinion can't be done well with a gamepad due to the gravity and twitch play.

Unless you wait for them to get close lol.

They use something called aim assist.  It is the only reason any fps is playable on consoles.
