How often do you need upgrades to armor and weapons?

What frequency do you need for gear upgrades. The trend seems to me more and more frequently. Is that good? Or does it make the loot sweeter when it is obtained less often?

Very nice and thought out poll.  /bow

I'm with the magical ultra rare unique item.  The feeling you get when you finally get it that item, very hard to beat, especially when a bunch of friends help you all through the way  of getting it.  Friendships for life there. :)

I absolutely hate the gear grind that most MMOs have become.. While I enjoy the occasional upgrade, I like my items to last for a bit as I have fun doing other things in-game..

How about gear that isn't easily repaired and has to be replaced due to wear and tear and dragons breath and the occasional rust monster.

The games I like best let you level off of drops with little to no crafting needed.  Or upgrades that are easily and inexpensively available in the auction house.  In general I know I need new gear when I'm getting my butt handed to me a lot in the new level.

The satisfaction of finding  an epic weapon when you defeat a powerful enemy, like Conan finding the Atlantean sword  in the cave. There was a sense of attachment to that weapon for Conan.  Something that is missing in many  mmorpgs today.

In the short story "The Thing in the Crypt", the skeleton  is awoken by Conan's warcry and he must defeat it. Obviously, the fact that it is undead, the sword has little to no effect , so Conan defeats it by throwing it into the  fire.

Thanks to Black Desert I realized how useless gear is. I dont really care about getting a new shiny as long as I feel like I'm progressing. But with that being said, gear is still important. I'm fine with changing gear once a week or so. And magical and rarer items being holy grails, so to speak.

I prefer a system where i have the same armor, from start till the end, which i can upgrade with rare items and crafting and which i can customize like i want.

My mentality comes largely from Everquest. If you happened to find a rare enemy and or defeat a rare powerful boss and they dropped something amazing, then that item should be relevant for a very very long time. I am also open to the idea of making anything extremely rare as an heirloom piece.

I had no vote that really captures my position.  Rather than having incrementally more powerful gear, I'd rather have no special weapons / gear.  I'd be happy with the starting short sword until it broke.  Then I'd get another.

As I'm a fan of horizontal progression, I don't like gear "upgrades". The gear grind sucks, vertical progression sucks, so I don't want it in my games.

I do, however, like getting new gear, I just prefer it to be more specialised gear (horizontal progression) or different cosmetics or replacements for gear about the break (e.g. swg).

I like Black Desert's gear system, despite my frequent cursing at the RNG. xD
It's nice to be able to constantly work on upgrading it, and to be able to share it with alts who can then benefit from all the hard work you've put in, instead of going through the whole damn cycle all over again like on 90% of the MMOs out there (fuck you character bound gear. Fuck. You.)

I know it was to combat RMT but they should really get rid of the bind on equip feature.  I really despise that feature.  :(  Sorry, a little off topic.  :)

I liked the Asheron's Call loot system.  That better loot could be anywhere.

I am rather tired of the loads of crap gear and vendortrash all MMOs drown me in nowadays.

I don't get the same rush at all when I find an upgrade that I used to get in the early MMOs, now it is more a *sigh*, another one then the huge kick I got when good stuff were rarer and a piece of good gear lasted long time even when you were leveling.

I guess I like how DAOC did it, generally items were good for a range of levels.  This was especially obvious with crafted gear sets.  I'd get a new set of gear made starting at around level 10 which started out red/orange to me (meaning it wore out more quickly) and was useful up to level 16 (when it would con blue or green) or so if I stretched it.   Then I'd go out and get a new crafted set and use it for another 4-6 levels.

Dropped items worked much the same way, so you'd get a nice drop (magic or otherwise) that was useful for a decent period of tiime, (especially past level 40, you might use the same items a month, and once you hit level cap you infrequently upgraded your gear.

Also, the look of items is very important to me, so if I have to choose between less functional, but nicer equipment and more functional, but uglier equipment, I'll choose the former 8 / 10 times(the other 20% being if it's the only way to progress or if others INSIST on the fugly set).

Thank god for transmog I say! And wardrobes and such...
Yeäah, wardrobes is nice even if I wish that didn't work on top tiered gear (someone using raid skins on a low level character just because she unlocked it on another char is a bit confusing, it is fine to allow you to change raid gear to something else or another piece of raid gear at the same tier but not to change lower tiered gear to high tiered raid gear, particularly in PvP).

I actually prefer if you can collect a specific set of gear and then personalize/improve that set over time through retooling and component upgrades. That way one is never outright cycling gear completely and it minimizes the "skittles" effect of gear upgrades, but you still have the ability to change the function of your items to a degree as you progress, like shifting about the stats in a similar manner to one would their own character.

As for rarity, I'd rather there be novel components that possess unique traits rather than stat shifts/improvements, and those are relatively rare to find.
