Same boat here.  With all the adds I see on here already, I thought I had whitelisted it.   But popups and popunders are verboten.  Have had some serious trouble with them.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

I have both an adblock and a script blocker, and don't actually see the popup. I don't even get ads on youtube. The script blocker blocks the youtube ads :pleased:

I don't watch commercials on TV either :)

Commercials and ads are the worst. And often times, a rogue ad can be on a site and infect the PC with a virus/malware/spyware. That has happened before on popular sites like Nexus (for Skyrim mods and other game mods).

I will never look, touch or see an ad or a commercial. Unless the commercial is found on Youtube, cause some of the super bowl ones are pretty entertaining.

But yeah, if you guys don't want to see ads at all (and also protect your browser from rogue scripts that can infect your PC with a virus), and not have popups ever, and watch youtube without ads. I recommend getting a script blocker add-on for firefox or chrome.

I think MMORPG should consider a paid subscription type model like Giantbomb has.  When you sub for X amount you get a site without the ads and access to other paid videos and content (exclusive and/or ahead of the non payers)

I would pay a sub to not have to use adblock and block the crazy amounts of adds on the site. I would toss $5 / $10 a month for a add free experience with just a nice background and non of the insane in your face adds this site puts out.  There are just sooo many and they are all advertising a insane amount of different things at times. Half not even related to gaming and the other half for scam games that I wouldn't visit if they paid me $1k a day to play.

Just as an example if I goto say Massively and look at there ads they are not flashy rolling adds. But when I come here its like every other visit the adds roll and move like crazy to get your attention. It is really the most annoying thing ever.  And WTF does ULTRA HD Foundation have to do with gaming?  And to kick that in the nuts if you sit on the page the adds even refresh scrolling in new adds that are all flashy showing stuff mostly not even related to gaming..

I will gladly turn adblock (or other similar programs on my machine) off for this site if you offer me another option to get a adfree experience.

Well, here's a thought, and to play devil's advocate, if a person uses adblock then aren't they "not" being counted and adding to the "clicks" for the advertisers?

So it's as if they have gone to another site.
If they aren't counting individuals who come and see many of the ads on this site then they are clearly doing something wrong. I see plenty of ads and in fact I've clicked to some through the years with adblock.

Bottom line, I bet those running this site when they go home some of them at least using adblock themselves. What I've noticed though through the years the site has been losing traffic and it has a lot to do with the state of MMO's and the poor job they are doing from excessive moderation to not being as competitive as other news sites. I'm not saying "copying", but the best new sites out there are usually those who are the first source, not when they just gather their source from other sources.

I have no problem keeping the ad-blocker off for mmorpg.com but you guys used to put up a lot of flash ads that repeatedly crashed browser, no matter which browser i used, not to mention these flash ads made the main site load slower. And on top of that many times it happened that i was trying to open article link but the ads got clicked instead for some odd reason. So i hope you guys worked out these problems.

My AdBlock Pro says: Blocked item on this page: 13 out of 475.

I think Im giving you guys a little lee-way even with it on. The only things I block are the nearly-porn-like content (League of Angels and some other "hey look boobs!" games).
  • Ammon777_newAmmon777_new Member UncommonPosts: 306
Ive been logged in for weeks. Why does it come up every time I access the site after I shut down and restart firefox, then come here?
  • donger56donger56 Member RarePosts: 443
Two failed upgrades and now you are going to annoy people who use ad block to try and boost revenue? Are you just trying to drive down your traffic so your next upgrade works better or what? You guys understand that we use ad block so we don't get annoying pop ups right? We know how to disable it if we want to. Your lack of revenue is your problem, not mine. It does not only show up once per log in either, it shows up every time you close the page and go back to the site so either you are being dishonest or you are incompetent. I'm going to go with all of the above on this one. This site is really starting to resemble the garbage games that it routinely sells out to promote.

Attempting to annoy users to the point that they disable the ad-blocker is kind of a shitty thing to do, no?

With the level of traffic on this site there is plenty of ad revenue to be made, and I'm sure that the site is doing quite well in that regard. Trying to get those of us using an ad-blocker to remove it by adding a mild annoyance that serves no purpose other than to annoy, seems ridiculous.
Expecting to get everything for free is kinda shitty.  Expect them to do all the work so we can enjoy their website then we want to shit all over the people paying for it.  GG

I could understand if they had shitty or intrusive ads but they do not they are kinda just sitting in the corner not bothering anyone.

Plenty of sites that dont harass users for spare change and or forcefully change their page. Find another way to generate profit for your site (like more paid articles and game previews, you know actual work that you would get paid for) or watch your site whither and die.

Actually they are, that is why they have a paid advertisement as a background and if it is a paid article then they got paid to do that article or preview, it is not based on traffic, but work done. If it was based on traffic then it would be based on video views, not adds watched, or views of the article, not adds viewed on the article.

I had this site allowed in my addblock, until it started redirecting me out of nowhere. If I consider the adds intrusive, I block them.

Look what happened at forbes.com.  It is famous now in case you hadn't heard of it.  They employed something to block people with adblocker asking people to not block so they could serve  ads.   Right away people started getting affected with malware.  Don't care if you don't believe it just understand it.

edit -- I might consider paying you $3.00 per month subscription for an add-free site. Maybe.

This is a good idea. There are at least a million users here. They could make enough money to pay for the entire website every month if only 2000 out of million paid a measly $2 or $3 every month. Thats hardly anyone considering the hundreds of thousands of gamers that come here.

I think it's crappier to use a site daily for free, while being unwilling to see a small add on the side of the page. But that's just me.

I use to run a heavy duty script blocker but now run a lighter one.  I like getting some ads.  If I'm looking at something and get adds that direct me to what I'm looking into anyway than it's been a helpful ad.  I'm for it as long as they don't over do it.  This site is ok.

Advertisement companies aren't as harmless as people think.  They can be malicious with malware and open up security risks.  Unless there's some guarantee that this site will screen their ads, i'll continue to keep blocking them.
