imageThe Legion Pre-Patch and My Return to Azeroth - Bill Murphy

Bill Murphy didn’t expect to find himself back in World of Warcraft, but on a whim he decided to re-subscribe and see what the upcoming pre-expansion patch is all about. In the week leading into the Pre-Patch (which launches today after maintenance), Bill finds himself reveling in old haunts, the victim of both nostalgia and hype for a major new update.

I just can't find any interest in this expansion, even though I'm glad they are focusing on the Burning Legion. WoD was pretty much the straw that broke the camel's back for me.

    My return to ResidentSleeper.

I don't know how WoW is still alive, or why people still play it after 12 years.

Then again, my frie..nemy is a Blizzard fanboy and pretty much all he plays are Blizzard games, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised some people are insane.

So by your reasoning, anyone who...."dares"....enjoy WoW is automatically categorized as a "fanboy or fangurl"?

I admit that I love Blizzard games, but I also like a zillion others. I don't necessarily consider myself a "fangurl" of any particular developers, but  more of a connoisseur of games that I have fun playing. Go figure.

I don't know when it became de rigueur for people to come in an trash other people's fun all the time. It's ridiculous to dismiss someone's thoughts on any particular game because you perceive "fun" differently.

Legion has some real fun in it. How long it will last will remain to be seen. Honestly, it feels like WoW, along with every other MMO out there, is becoming a "play for 2-3 months at expansion time and then leave" rinse-repeat kind of game. The days of years of exclusive devotion to a single game are gone for the most part.

World of Warcraft does better job than any other theme park MMO with PvE, specifically raid mechanics on bosses. Then it has some of the best ranked PvP in battlegrounds and arena combined with enjoyable story and distinct classes you have a decent MMO.

Downside to WOW it's been the lack of content and long delays between PvP seasons which is addressed now. It has titles, mounts and other achievements as end game rewards for progression and more importantly, if you are lucky you can find yourself to be part of a very interesting guild you'll bond with and enjoy socializing, something few other MMO's could also do in the past.

World of Warcraft it is what it is not out of fanboyzm or random luck, but because of what it delivers. To wrap this up the addons have also played a crucial part to deliver a sophisticated combat and far more friendly UI.

I welcome the coming expansion. The newest update brought a massive breath of life into the game with beautiful new animations and sound effects.

Charge and leap on the warrior is gest!

I'm not one who had a problem with WoD, I am honestly still playing it's pve content between alliance and horde.

Haven't played any legion ptr or even watched any videos yet, so the expansion with be fresh in August!

in the sea of fake f2p p2win cash grab, poor games, or game with no soul.... that logic wow still there, that a decent buy to play games with a subs, ff14 work good too, rest are pretty much crap when they are free to play, with a few notable exception that it !!

until we see more dev who create good games with subs in mind, wow will stay alive.

I beta tested Legion and have played with the pre-patch yesterday. This patch really doesn't do legion justice as you can't really see a lot of the things they have really worked on IMO. Yes you can see the transmog which was important to me personally, but the feel of the game is a little different. They attempted to go back to what blizzard was a little more with Legion. Mobs are more on level, but you can still blow thru a lot of them if you know your class and spec. But overall I feel that legion has potential where I didn't really see that with the last couple xpac's. The demon hunter which you wont see for a few more weeks unless you do the test server is a nice addition to the game, love the double jump and gliding also. It doesn't feel overpowered the way the death knight did when it was introduced.

The improved combat animations and sounds are surprisingly good in Legion (looked a lot at warrior and rogue so far).

Ive been playing for a while now and really loving my time in Azeroth and rally look forward to all the changes coming in Legion. I have to say it is a little weird using a polearm on my Survival hunter :) but my Outlaw Rogue is a on of fun..

Cant wait for the new Class quest lines and also the updates to crafting including quest lines. I think it will make my time feel more valuable than just doing the standard grind and dailys

Melee hunter, sign me up (infact I will be tonight), back in vanilla I was the proud owner of two, yes TWO Zulu’grub swords (the green glowy ones), sure it was not the best stats wise but I made sure I wing clipped and raptor striked all day long, all they saw was a green blur as I mesmerised my foes.

I'm going to be honest. Legion has me looking back at WoW. But all my toons are the Alliance. I've never been able to get hooked into Horde.

Let's just say... if I were to go back (and I've owned every new expansion up to Legion) and I wanted to say.. bring my kid along for the ride... what would I NOW need to buy to get them playing prior to Legion? Is it just the most recent one or do I need to buy her all the way back?

I'm going to "from scratch" my toons, if I were to do it, which is why I ask.

The base game now includes everything up to WoD. Only thing that needs to be purchased separately is Legion.

It's fun, got me to resub.

New animations and sounds are great, so far really liking my Paladin, new 100 (Legion boost) mage, and will probably get my 99 Warrior up to 100 finally.

Not sure I want to go through the whole leveling process with my Warlock, Shaman, and DK (all 90-92) but man... new Rogue and Hunter specs do have me tempted. Same with new Discipline Priest mechanics.

I guess there isn't much to do at level 100 now except tool around, so maybe I will work on leveling up my Warlock...

I don't know, I don't have the time to play more than a single character, MAYBE two, but one great thing about WoW is that after 12 years there is simply so much content.

I'll take a wait and see approach. Summer time is much too busy for me anyway, I don't get a lot of gaming time at this time of the year.

I just like to be challenged. The leveling game is what I enjoy the most and I don't want the leveling experience to be a cake walk. My dreams of being a hardcore raider ended many... many.... moons ago ;)

I sincerely do hope that they get this Xpack right. We'll just have to see if they truly deliver this time.

I still play because there is nothing currently out that's better.

I have a 92 Druid and a couple of other 90s floating around somewhere in their databases. Meh. After WOD, I'm in no rush to do anything in that game. Although, I'll be paying close attention in the hopes it is well received. But I seem to recall, early on in WOD, players were praising this expansion, then it was like a switch was flipped and all the sudden, subs plummeted.

So, once again, I'll use the same statement I always use........."I'll wait"

I actually resubbed just a couple of weeks ago. I've stopped and started a few times now, most of the time ending up in a raiding guild, and getting burned out on slowly released content. I decided to start an entire new character from Level 1 and go through casually. It was fun going through some of the old dungeons I remember. A lot of them have been updated since I last played them and were totally new to me. The cross-server thing took me by surprise. I've just gotten into WoD content (L92), still don't have enough gear to start WoD dungeons, so I'm working on my garrison and the storyline quests.

The game is actually pretty fun if you don't take it too seriously. Playing as a casual this go through, I've had fun leveling a new character up and not worrying about farming consumables, doing dailies, or making scheduled raid times. It's a shame the game pretty much speedruns you through some of the older content, but I suppose I do have the option of going back and doing the quests just for the lore if I really wanted to. I missed almost all of TBC, WotLK, Cata and MoP out-leveling it via dungeon running, although I had pretty well played through the first two my earlier go-arounds and didn't ~really~ miss it. Once I hit the point where I am forced to raid for better gear I may grow tired of it again, but the nice thing about now is that about the time I get up in Draenor far enough to start needing raids to advance, Legion will be out and the hamster wheel gets reset.

The dungeon queue is addictive, and where I have my most fun. It's still decently fast even for a DPS class, up until I hit about WotLK dungeons, the queue was never more than around 5 minuets. After that, it did slow down, I think it averaged around 10 minutes as a DPS from there until where I am now. That actually worked out pretty well for me, I would queue, farm stuff to level tradeskills, and about the time I was getting tired of flying around the queue would pop up. Rinse and repeat.

Went back to WoW for WoD to prepare for Legion this month. Spent 4 days doing mindless, old, and repetitive kill these/fetch this/escort him quests. All the while using an outdated ui, immersion breaking levels of poor graphics, and a used to death boring and slow tab target combat system. The nail in the coffin is the lack of any pvp additions with Legion, in what's now the only yearly update/expansion to the game. Nostalgia and having interesting dungeons/raids all the while having to suffer with every feature of the game being outdated is not enough.

After experiencing half a dozen games or more in recent years with semi or action combat, impressive graphics, fresh and clean ui's, and all the while having meaningful and immersive pve I just expect more for my money. It's safe to say, for good this time, I'll never be going back to WoW. Here's hoping for WoW 2 in my lifetime, whenever they're done milking China with this one.

Games are getting too complicated now a days. I started WoW during beta and a few of my characters still have two letter names. Now I read the stuff in their emails and don't understand half the stuff they're talking about. All I want to do is login and play. That said I'll probably do the Demon hunter as that's pretty straight forward, then that will probably be it.

I think I understand what you are saying. It seems at times that systems get added upon systems and one starts reading about "tokens" and "points in your x, y and z" and before long it all gets overwhelming.
