Bill Murphy didn’t expect to find himself back in World of Warcraft, but on a whim he decided to re-subscribe and see what the upcoming pre-expansion patch is all about. In the week leading into the Pre-Patch (which launches today after maintenance), Bill finds himself reveling in old haunts, the victim of both nostalgia and hype for a major new update.

It's ok, you can play one of the new mmorpg titles coming out instea...oh..
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't know how WoW is still alive, or why people still play it after 12 years.
Then again, my frie..nemy is a Blizzard fanboy and pretty much all he plays are Blizzard games, so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised some people are insane.
I admit that I love Blizzard games, but I also like a zillion others. I don't necessarily consider myself a "fangurl" of any particular developers, but more of a connoisseur of games that I have fun playing. Go figure.
I don't know when it became de rigueur for people to come in an trash other people's fun all the time. It's ridiculous to dismiss someone's thoughts on any particular game because you perceive "fun" differently.
Legion has some real fun in it. How long it will last will remain to be seen. Honestly, it feels like WoW, along with every other MMO out there, is becoming a "play for 2-3 months at expansion time and then leave" rinse-repeat kind of game. The days of years of exclusive devotion to a single game are gone for the most part.

Downside to WOW it's been the lack of content and long delays between PvP seasons which is addressed now. It has titles, mounts and other achievements as end game rewards for progression and more importantly, if you are lucky you can find yourself to be part of a very interesting guild you'll bond with and enjoy socializing, something few other MMO's could also do in the past.
World of Warcraft it is what it is not out of fanboyzm or random luck, but because of what it delivers. To wrap this up the addons have also played a crucial part to deliver a sophisticated combat and far more friendly UI.
Charge and leap on the warrior is gest!
I'm not one who had a problem with WoD, I am honestly still playing it's pve content between alliance and horde.
Haven't played any legion ptr or even watched any videos yet, so the expansion with be fresh in August!

until we see more dev who create good games with subs in mind, wow will stay alive.
Cant wait for the new Class quest lines and also the updates to crafting including quest lines. I think it will make my time feel more valuable than just doing the standard grind and dailys
Let's just say... if I were to go back (and I've owned every new expansion up to Legion) and I wanted to say.. bring my kid along for the ride... what would I NOW need to buy to get them playing prior to Legion? Is it just the most recent one or do I need to buy her all the way back?
I'm going to "from scratch" my toons, if I were to do it, which is why I ask.
New animations and sounds are great, so far really liking my Paladin, new 100 (Legion boost) mage, and will probably get my 99 Warrior up to 100 finally.
Not sure I want to go through the whole leveling process with my Warlock, Shaman, and DK (all 90-92) but man... new Rogue and Hunter specs do have me tempted. Same with new Discipline Priest mechanics.
I guess there isn't much to do at level 100 now except tool around, so maybe I will work on leveling up my Warlock...
I don't know, I don't have the time to play more than a single character, MAYBE two, but one great thing about WoW is that after 12 years there is simply so much content.

I just like to be challenged. The leveling game is what I enjoy the most and I don't want the leveling experience to be a cake walk. My dreams of being a hardcore raider ended many... many.... moons ago
I sincerely do hope that they get this Xpack right. We'll just have to see if they truly deliver this time.

I still play because there is nothing currently out that's better.
So, once again, I'll use the same statement I always use........."I'll wait"
The game is actually pretty fun if you don't take it too seriously. Playing as a casual this go through, I've had fun leveling a new character up and not worrying about farming consumables, doing dailies, or making scheduled raid times. It's a shame the game pretty much speedruns you through some of the older content, but I suppose I do have the option of going back and doing the quests just for the lore if I really wanted to. I missed almost all of TBC, WotLK, Cata and MoP out-leveling it via dungeon running, although I had pretty well played through the first two my earlier go-arounds and didn't ~really~ miss it. Once I hit the point where I am forced to raid for better gear I may grow tired of it again, but the nice thing about now is that about the time I get up in Draenor far enough to start needing raids to advance, Legion will be out and the hamster wheel gets reset.
The dungeon queue is addictive, and where I have my most fun. It's still decently fast even for a DPS class, up until I hit about WotLK dungeons, the queue was never more than around 5 minuets. After that, it did slow down, I think it averaged around 10 minutes as a DPS from there until where I am now. That actually worked out pretty well for me, I would queue, farm stuff to level tradeskills, and about the time I was getting tired of flying around the queue would pop up. Rinse and repeat.
After experiencing half a dozen games or more in recent years with semi or action combat, impressive graphics, fresh and clean ui's, and all the while having meaningful and immersive pve I just expect more for my money. It's safe to say, for good this time, I'll never be going back to WoW. Here's hoping for WoW 2 in my lifetime, whenever they're done milking China with this one.

I think I understand what you are saying. It seems at times that systems get added upon systems and one starts reading about "tokens" and "points in your x, y and z" and before long it all gets overwhelming.
