As if the US didn't already suffer from more than enough people who do nothing but stare at their phones all day....I fail to see the "social beauty" in anything that gives this screen-addicted society even MORE of an excuse to pay attention to their phones, and only their phones.....wow.

As soon as five-year-old little Sally gets run over by some idiot playing this game while he's driving, I think we're going to be on the road to a problem.  I can see the extremists hosting marches in protest of Pokemon Go, and can see politicians wasting time creating legislation in a fruitless attempt to get our addle-brained citizenry to find some other interest beyond their cell phones.  The game may be fun, but I'm sorry, there is zero "beauty" in our disconnected society as is, and now with the addition of this game (and others ofc) it's only going to get worse.  If you're going to go outside, enjoy nature, and exercise, you can damn well do it without your phone!
You could say the same thing about Facebook. There are by far more people that facebook and drive then people that play pokemon go and drive.

Besides catching pokemon while driving looks to be a pain in the arse and anytime the game catches you going over 15 mph it does not count to hatching eggs or anything like that.  The best and really about the only way to play the game is by walking around since you have to be so close to the pokemon to even start a capture and the higher pokemon you have to get even closer to them to have a cach to catch them.

Not saying that there will not be stupid people that do stupid things like playing while driving. But them same people are more then likely the same people that text and facebook while driving and the same thing would have happened.

As far as kids wandering out in the streets and such that if on you as a parent to keep a eye on your kids and teach them.

I don't understand why, after reading several articles and talking to friends who were playing it, I'm just now finding out it's built around a money-for-pokecoin microtransaction business model. I don't own a data phone, I don't play mobile games or download apps, but one look at the pricing structure in the one place I could find them listed looks more like they're taking advantage of people than they are helping them in any regard. You can argue that people are getting exercise, that people are leaving their houses and socializing with other players, but all of that good will is squandered when you realize the whole sham design is built around enticing individuals to spend more and more to enjoy the game at their leisure (rather than waiting 20ish hours per gym defense, or whatever the hell it's called, to earn currency by playing). If this is what mobile games and gamers are used to, I'm glad to be missing out.
    Not really.

All the things you can find in the shop you can also get for free from pokestops. On top of that there are items not even in the shop you can get from the pokestops.

Pokestops themselves are on a five minute timer, meaning you can get items from them every five minutes, and many places have either clusters of stops or large loops somewhere that allows players to basically create a circuit to fill their inventory with free items fast.

It's actually somewhat the opposite of your concern, as the play scheme leaves Niantic offering players very little reason to even touch the shop during the normal course of play. Since Pokemon Go is a free to play game, this is actually a bit of an odd strategy they have adopted since it kinda means that with their massive userbase there is going to be only a small margin that are intent on making much if any purchases.

Would say perhaps the only thing that might get bought more regularly from the shop is gonna be the incense and lures, since those are relatively rare spawn on pokestops.

Some articles are already popping up about it improving mental health by getting people out of the home and into the world.

Pokemon Go is getting people out of their beds and off their couches and into the world.  I don't know how anyone can deny this is a good thing.

It's the internet, and specifically, it's this website. People here complain if a game company donates profits from a fundraiser to a charity. The reaction to Pokemon Go, sadly, does not surprise me at all.

I am shocked, shocked I say, that a forum so yellow in it's bitterness would be shitting all over this game. I've been out most days the last two days interacting with people, walking my ass off, and having fun.

So far its not an MMO , is there a name for a shared RPG, because you don't affect anyone elses game nor do they yours in any major way? The only player interactive bit is at gym and even then your just battling an AI Pokemon, no trading yet, and no battling strangers. But there is the novelty of talking to people with shared interest you meet while walking around.

also the game doesn't take into account terrain much, over that guard rail and fence is a swamp with stagnant polluted runoff water, also an awesome looking rare Pokemon. On my walk today, no rare Pokemon, but that water was there and so were Pokemon i haven't caught before, i'm older and wiser than go that far for a game. But I don't think a kid or even a teenager would give it much thought. I don't have any kids of my own, but it seems like this is a game were parents will need to have a talk about how far its ok to go to get a pokemon, and when its just too dangerous. Also i live in a heavily populated suburb with lots of crime, so i can under stand the points of view of those worried about people exploring.
I live in Baltimore, I can tell you one thing for sure. There's no one around here that doesn't know where they shouldn't go young or old.

I lived in Fells Point for a few years, which is a nice area overall, but if you walked five or six blocks in the wrong direction, things got a bit sketchy. I lived right on the corner where Obrycki's crab house was, and watching rich white people dodge crackheads and a bunch of shady Chicanos from my rooftop deck was a thing of beauty.

I live off Fairview Avenue, which is a rather interesting area lol, On my end you have a golf course, a decent amount of commerce within reach, decent homes etc... Yet go a few blocks in any direction everything is burnt out. Weird city.

I have a contrary take: it's a children's game, and we should be discouraging kids from constantly jamming their faces into smart phones. Social beauty? You'll forgive me for not being so optimistic.

Its a game for everyone. Youll be surprised how many couples, families, I see when battling gym and catching pokemon with my kid. And its like.. Your prob playing pokemon? Making new friends etc.

I'm sorry, we're now dropping down into the tried and true "bashing someone's social functionality because they don't like the same thing as me" play? The game looks like garbage - a pointless, mindless waste of time. I wouldn't let any child of mine near it, and I certainly wouldn't throw away even a second playing it myself.

I don't really care if it brings joy to other people - the first person with their noses glued to a screen who gets hit by a bus or a train, or stabbed because they're in an unseemly part of town, all while trying to catch fake monsters is going to look real bad.

That realy won't be the game's fault.

People already get hit by car and stuff texting and watching youtube...

Also, it's not the game's fault if a neighborhood is dangerous... You should know your town, don't go to dangerous places...

I play the game and I am an adult and I can watch the screen while looking around me for obstacles... You'd need to be a moron to get hit by a car or anything while playing Pokemon Go. I say good riddance, less stupid for the genetic pool.

While you can buy things with Pokecoins.. you can earn them... 20 coins per Poke at gyms.  So what you do is run around and put your pokes in every gym in the area, get 20 coins per Poke... voila.  20 hours later rinse and repeat.

And people who don't get the social aspects haven't tried it.  I've met and converse with MORE total strangers in the past 3 days playing.. and that's not including the 12.1 miles walked in 3 days.

I honestly think this is just a fad; remember how people were so interested in the Wii Fit? I think it's going to be similar to that; I personally I keep exercising and gaming separate. I exercise, and then I game after I exercise. Oh, and who needs to socialize? lol, Just the title alone "The Social Beauty of Pokemon" puts me off. I have no interest in meeting new people; I guess I'm one of those antisocial gamers, and proud of it. ;) I understand how it encourages people to get up and about; I'm all for that. However, I feel it's going to do more harm than good; call me a pessimist, but people shouldn't need an excuse to get off their arses. If they do, it will probably be short-lived. Let's just hope these Pokemon chasers don't end up killing themselves (yeah, I believe stupid should be punished), but they could end up causing an accident and kill someone who wasn't chasing Pokemon. If you do decide to play this game, please play it sensibly! x.x

Not quite - Ingress has a LOT more features and is a far deeper and IMO better game - and ingress players have basically created all the "hotspots" including taking pictures of park signs etc.. that were all reused for Pokeman Go.

The bottom line is - you add pokeman to anything and it is likely to sell 100x more

True enough. But it is nice to see a hugely active community of gamers at the local parks and such, where family's can play together.

I don't think that either Ingress or Pokémon are at their best when played in a hardcore style. But that's just my opinion.

i've got over 60 unique pokemon now and haven't spend a cent... i've considered it a few times, but outside of lures i get more than enough pokeballs and stuff from pokestops. you aren't forced to spend anything, the option is there if you want it

i mean ingress still has over 10 million downloads which is quite a feat on it's own... and with the team already having a good understanding of what they're doing it's only a matter of time before more features get added to pokemon go and it becomes a much more deep and detailed game.

Wow that is impressive! Nintendo really needed this. Good for them!
I read somewhere that the first few days of launch, even with all the server issues not only were there SO many downloads, but the game grossed about 1.6 MILLION dollars a day just on IOS.  Thats pretty crazy.

A few friends and I went out to play pokemon go around the city today.  It might be a fad,  but it's .... quite possibly a craze at this point.  I've never seen so many people before out in my community ...doing.. .well...anything.

RIding bikes.. sitting around in large groups at the park.. all of them with their phones out, all of them talking about pokemon.

We went to several parks just to see what the landscape was like.. it's insane.

It's an MMO because you can get ganked while you do PVE. It's social because it brings people of all races colors and creeds to gank together.
