I played for a few months. Read up on whatever I needed to when I had questions. I loved the game and how much information you needed to take in just to play. I thought it was wonderful, as well as the visuals ;D

I quit the game because of a few things:

Progression - I felt that to continue progressing in the game that I was forced to fly bigger and slower ships. I love frigates and their speed. I wanted to always fly frigates and fast ships. Unfortunately I couldn't continue doing higher level missions (I think 4+?) without flying a big slow ship. I vowed to only fly frigates and what it got me was ratting in low-sec or dying instantly playing the tackle role.

PVE - I know EVE is all about PVP, which I like, but I'm also a PVE player. The missions and ratting just seemed stale and boring after a while. I would fly into a mission area, the npc's would spawn and I'd fight them. That's it. No cool things to fly through or interact with. I would love to have a mission where I fly through a huge wreckage while fighting off enemies, destroying key points or objectives. Some missions have you rescue scientists, which just consists of dragging the icon to your inventory. It didn't really grab me the way I thought it should.

Gates - More specifically gate camping and PVP around them. It seems to me that the majority of pvp happens around gates. You jump through, and if there was ppl camping it you prayed that you warped off in time. It made the game feel broken up into little pieces, all revolving around gates.

WIS - I'll have to be honest here and say I was super excited back when I first heard about walking in stations. Only to be completely saddened by the single room I was locked into, which really served no purpose. Why can't I walk in a station and rent a space in the station to set up my own shop selling goods or talk with others?

Sandbox - I'm not talking huge corp stations or activites here. Sandbox for the individual or small group of friends is what I want. I want to open my own tiny station in space, selling goods or whatever I want. I've said this before , I want to open my own space burger joint. This is just an example of something I can't do. Not advocating for a completely solo experience like most games today, just something else as an individual that I could work towards to help benefit the playerbase. Maybe my burger would give a tiny bonus to skill learning speed or whatever.

Maybe I'm just asking for too much. It's why I didn't continue to play. Maybe this just wasn't the game for me. So I moved on. Hell, maybe some of these things are in game I just never found out. IDK but EVE is a game I continue to keep an eye on, but don't play.

I remember trying the game twice, the first time I got blown up in some corporation war so i quit because i didnt have much money to replace what i lost. The second time I was in low sec trying to figure out the exploration mechanics and someone blew me up, again, not much isk so i gave up.
    1) Never fly what you can't afford to lose and easily replace.

    2) HS war dec mechanics are kind of borked atm so in order to be in a corp there you need to find one that knows how to circumvent the mechanic.  Otherwise you are better off in a npc one, at least until you have the skills to go to null.

    3) Low sec is the most dangerous space IMO and is no place for a newer player to figure out anything, unless you join a corp who resides there and can show you the ropes.

Good post though, CCP could well learn from it.

It's extremely simple.  Getting blown up and losing all your shit is not player friendly.  This is the main reason why FFA PVP games have such small playerbases.  Eve's playerbase looks high but the reality is it's a ton of people with multiple accounts.  That's not to downplay it's success, it is definitely a good model for it's style of game, but it's never going to achieve mainstream success while it is that punishing.

BTW I say this as a player with around 25mil sp, I though I quit several years ago (shortly after the wormhole expansion, can't remember which one).

I agree, most folks aren't interested in losing their
their stuff which is why CCP needs to focus on making sure newer players can easily manage their level of risk, something I feel they've lost sight of the past year or so.

Are you kidding? Making ISK for new players is ridiculously easy.

I end up with 3B ISK on my last trial account...

You aren't new, and I said "risk" not isk.

A bit too easy to easy to HS gank or war dec senselessly which frequently drives new players from the game.

BTW, why don't you share how you made your fortune so the new players might benefit?

How many people actually play Eve? Like 50k at most? That isn't a lot.
  • VolgoreVolgore Member EpicPosts: 3,872
Tried it once, a guy from the official invitations-forum who gave me his tryout-link at that time scammed me right away. Way to say "keep out of our game".

How many of those are actually new players and not just current players opening multiple accounts? I highly doubt that many people tried Eve last year.

I am not new, the character is. What is your point anyway...?

Also, what risk are you talking about...? All I lost was handful of T1/T2 fitted frigs and dessies, just pennies..

It's not that unbelievable, eve is the most advertised and spoken about sandbox mmo out there, and it's really easy to try the long trial. The game is free to try remember.

Every current player opening another account wouldn't even account for half that number (and alts wouldn't be leaving in 2 hours).

I am one of those players. Although I did try it for at least 2-3 days. I really liked how it looked and played. The only thing that put me off was that you train skills passively and even when offline. I'd rather get exp and skill points from actually doing the tasks itself. I also had the constant feeling that I would never reach a point where I was relevant or as strong as the more veteran players. Plus needing two or more accounts for more advanced gameplay put me off too. I like having one main character

Unfortunately it's because everything in EVE works at a snails pace and yet today, life is 100mph, so the busy people on the planet want a game that they can play for an hour and get shit done.

Training skills take time, making isk from nothing takes time, mining takes time, flying from system to system takes time - everything takes time but the biggest thing that takes time is to learn how to do anything.  And today's people are too busy to learn.  Many games used to come with a manual but now none do because no-one reads them as we are all time precious.

I've got an EVE char and can only log in for a bit here and there, and I basically do very little as anything I turn my mind to can't be completed in an hour except the repetitive stuff.
  • Kane72Kane72 Member UncommonPosts: 211
The other thing to add, in years gone by, you could join a corp and just play, but now they want your API key for everything and you need to be on a chat channel with them - loads of hassle to go through just to play the game.  The game takes so long for anything exciting to happen that I can see why 2 hours would be plenty for some.

The reasons for EVE's inability to retain players are in your face all over web, and have been repeated time and time again ad nauseum for the past decade, since the game's initial release.  Without going into detail to avoid offending its very loyal player base, it's not only a niche OWPvP audience, it's a very unforgiving and toxic one at that, to put it mildly.   I find it very hard to believe that the obvious has people in high places at EVE Headquarters scratching their heads in bewilderment.  It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why this game can't retain players.  It's a cesspool of the worst in niche gaming, and the resultant community it breeds, all piled into one very neatly packaged game.

LOL WOW yes sir EVE is unforgiving. Perfect for those who like to experience fear in games like old school PvP we have seen in UO and EQ1...yup, better keep that head on a swivel cuz there are baddies out thar looking for something to pew.

Using the tools EVE gives ya, I mined rocks and PI without any of my ships going boom, for months, so obviously you need to play long enough to enjoy more of its content

This has an always will be a problem not just for eve but MMO market in general, any game that offers a free trial will always keep nerw players coming, and unless that new player feels connected to the game, understands the game they rarely stop.
This is the case more-so with complex games like EvE at first the game Overwhelms you with information, its hard to grasp and you cannot see where the fun is (lots of people moan about SP differences)
Many moons ago when i worked (briefly) in the ISD department one of our goals was to try and keep new players playing, the conversation rate then was low in the single digit % of trial players then continued.
How CCP get around this is the big question, there is no doubt over the last 8 years ive been in game the new player experience has gotten far better. When i first started very little information was in (or out) of game and you really had to suck-it-and-see.
For me the responsible should lie partly with the players, corps like EvE uni , newbies etc play a massive part in the retention of new guys

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

I played eve from early beta until mid 2008 and loved the time I spent in it.  It's the only game I have ever played that long without a break of a few months.  However, I didn't like the way the game was heading and that was it.  Haven't been back and won't go back.

As mentioned, it never had a problem getting people, but keeping them is hard.  There used to be something for everyone to do.  Even though it's a PVP focused game, there used to be things for "Carebears" to do and not get involved with PVP for the most part.  In fact, at the time I left, the majority of players spent more time in sec space than not.  The vocal minority cried rivers of tears and the devs listened.  They changed some of the mechanics of the game to make it easier to gank people in sec space and did things to almost force people into lower sec space.  That is when I left for good.

Things are even worse now than they were then from what I have read, so if they want to retain players they better go back to the pre-2008 game mechanics they had then or they will always have a problem.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

I wish they fix their password recovery system. I've been sending in tickets and trying to recover my password however I never get a email back to start the process. What a joke.

Have thought of finally doing the research and effort needed to get into this as PVP with consequences and the general drama I would love. Also found out it would run fine in 4k on my second machine with a 960 when I started researching last week a bit , so could run it on the second machine learning the ropes at times.

(plus I like the music and scenery too )

Eve University still recommended as where to start ?

EVE University is a great place to start, but the last I checked they had a waiting line to get in the door.  You could also try Pandemic Horde, Brave Newbies or just join the Spectre Fleet channel and make some friends there to fly with.  Lots of really good people in that open-to-everyone channel.

EVE, the best screen saver I ever played!

Kidding I've played off and on for years, also made a few alt accounts.  When I have the itch to play a space game I play it, but most times it's just kinda meh. Truth is the game never holds my interest for more than two months at a time, then I leave it for a year or so.
