imageCan Fishing Ever Be Fun? - Black Desert Online News

I hate fishing in Black Desert Online. In fact, hate is a generous word: I absolutely loathe it. Every single MMO I’ve ever played always has a group of players desperately wanting fishing to be implemented and yet it has to be, without doubt, the most mind numbing profession ever devised. I’ve never once fished in an MMO and found it entertaining.

Been trying to fish a Mackerel and Mudskipper for hours now with no success so I kinda feel the pain.

there was only 1 game that did fishing fun and that was Archeage
What you do is find a group of fishers, ram into them with your huge ship jump on their ship which has few fishes on them, kill the fisher take the ship and get paid,gg

Fishing in FF:ARR I've found to be fairly entertaining. No where near heading out to a lake/river to cast a line but still better than any other mmo I've tried. Mind you I still haven't tried BDO so I have no idea what it's like.

No. Fishing can never be fun. It's not fun IRL, it's even less fun in a virtual world.

Also, unless you normally leave your PC on running an application when you aren't around to use it you are paying roughly a subscription's worth of payment every month in electricity costs. Seriously, check your electrical rates, check how much your PC uses and then see what 8 hours (for sleep or work - or both, ~16 hours!) will cost you so that you can afk fish in a game. You're probably paying $12-$17 per month depending on where you live to leave that PC on for 8 hours while you're away.

Great success! P2P is back baby, except this time, the developers don't get any of the subscription money!

I find that statement bizzare but only because of my MMO ecosystem.

I think all the MMOs I have played other than Fallen Earth has and have had fishing.

Since when is crafting or gathering in any MMO fun? It is supposed to be a painful grind or everyone would do it. AFK fishing is the absolute slowest way to earn money and skill fishing....but it is also the easiest and least painful. I am okay with that because I will never sit there and fish when I could be doing something fun. It would be nice if this stuff could be fun, but not very realistic. FFXIV had the right idea, but in the end you are just doing a rotation like you would in a raid.

As for the afk thing I am all for it. All this does is puts players not willing to cheat or exploit on par with those who will. If you could not do things afk legally in BDO, you bet there would be a decent amount of players who would find a way illegally. I love BDO's approach to this....it is a game, they don't take this business to seriously when it comes to this stuff.

Fishing in UO was the only fishing worth a damn.

Mabinogi's fishing system is fun, at least I find it fun.  It's a minigame of its own - when you get a "bite", a button appears to start the minigame.  The fish splashes about, changing direction randomly, and you have to keep pulling it in so that it stays inside a certain square - if the fish leaves the square too many times before the timer runs out, it gets away.  It's quite a challenge to do properly; it's also (I think) the only non-combat activity in Mabinogi that's actually dynamic, something that keeps doing things and you have to keep up with it.  There should be more of those in my opinion, it gets tiresome when combat is the only task that isn't just clicking various fixed things in a fixed combination.

You can also AFK it, if you don't click the button for the minigame within a few seconds you randomly get the fish or not with a certain probability, but your maximum chance of success is much lower in that case.

I don't do it very much myself any more, but that's only because (like much of Mabinogi's "life skills" content) it's been neglected rather and there aren't many things I want that you can get from it, unless there's a special event on.

What's Black Desert Online's fishing system consist of?

    If you write, be polite.

As a point of note, afk fishing is less effective than being "at the helm".

I keep reading people indicating "why actually play the fish game when you just have to be afk" (like this article *cough* *cough*) but if one's choice is to get the most from fishing and you either afk fish or manually fish you will always choose to manually fish.

I think the "fishing game' in this game is really more like a slot machine. It feels the same. You cast your rod (put in the coin) and when the time is right you hit space bar (pull the lever) and if you can hit the right buttons in time you get a result. Maybe 3 of a kind or maybe it's a bust.

right so we want to go out of our way to make fishing as much not like real fishing as possible.

maybe we should make it like driving cars? I mean driving cars is fun right? so why not make fishing like driving cars sense we dont care about making it resemble real life fishing in anyway.

step 1: want a mechanic in a game that is something you do in real life
step 2: nothing about that real life mechanic is interesting so lets remove all aspects of it.

Not really sure what your point is other than a rant.

Also, if we are too be specific, "real life fishing" isn't an afk affair once you are actually fishing.

"in black desert online" if you are afk fishing you fish something like every 3 minutes. If you are mannign the controls it's a lot faster than that and you stand to bring in a bigger haul.

Like it, don't like it, that was my point. Whether or not you want it to be like Rapala Pro Bass Fishing is between you and pearl abyss.

The bit about all the people standing around on the beach fishing could have easily been used to describe what it's like when I go to the shore IRL. People lining the shores with fishing poles, and just standing around. I disagree with sovrath as well, about IRL fishing not being AFK. I spend more time staring out at the ocean than ecru ally doing anything when I go fishing. It's about as interactive as the fishing in game.

100% matter of opinion.  Me personally, I enjoy it.  Every so often, I just wanna do something mindless.  I fish, and surf the internet and just veg a bit.

The only type of RL fishing I've ever enjoyed is trolling for salmon where the tricky parts are making sure you have enough beer and fuel and that one person stays sober enough to find the dock.

Fishing in BDO is either something I half-do while watching sports on TV: AFK while the game is on and active during commercials and intermissions, or just do actively to earn cash quickly. AFK fishing for cash is sort of lame since it takes literally 5 times as long to fill your bag and if done the way some people talk about it while you're at work or asleep those 9-10 hr old fish will sell for shit silver.

Now... is it a repetitive grind with a mini game that just won't be fun after the first 5 times? You betcha. But aren't we playing a genre where repetition is the name of the game?

The only thing that sets fishing apart in BDO from other mmorpgs where I can't be bothered to do it is the guaranteed competitive income... it's the only reason to do it.

Except I said "when actually fishing". The reeling in, the knowing not to reel in and let the fish tire itself, etc. That part requires you.

If you leave your pole in a holder and go away to lunch you will probably not come back with a fish on the line.

One the fish has bitten you actually have to bring it in. Depending on the fish and the gear that can be an easy or hard affair.

Why are some people suggesting I have to choose between AFK fishing and live fishing? I do both. I sleep and work IRL, and when I do these things, I AFK fish (and my computer would be on anyway so the electric bill argument is invalid).

So the argument about live fishing being more efficient than AFK fishing, while true, is missing the point. The real question is, "How much more effective is AFK fishing than not at all?" The answer for me is an average of 1 million silver an afk stretch (I run out of inventory space before my rod breaks, but I usually have about 600k worth of yellows, 300k in blues and greens, and 2-3 artifact scroll pieces worth 200k each on the market.).

    Not bad for sleeping.

What? .. afk fishing is okay for money making purposes, but it is nowhere as lucrative as actually sitting there and fishing.
You can catch x amount of fish during that 3 minute wait for it to auto reel when you are at a hotspot.

PS - All mammals have nipples.

    Get over it already.
