I am honestly confused by the logic of this thread. Doom 4 and Overwatch have nothing in common other than that they are first person shooters.

If anything I am much more excited about Overwatch as it looks like somthing I will play quite a bit and will have tons of replayability.

It's like saying that Mario Kart is a shitty game because it doesn't look as good as Call of Duty/Battlefiend.

Agree. I am looking forward to both games but for completely different reasons. I love Doom. One of my favorite gaming experiences of my life. Yet Overwatch looks like a TF3 which I am ok with. Bring them both on!

While I agree that Doom 4 visually blows Overwatch out of the water, OW isn't trying to compete with Doom 4.  They are trying to make an FPS game that is an esport.  They are trying to compete with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

I am sure they realized that CSGO is unique among FPS games in having a strong esports component, but I really think they did not understand why.  Competing with CSGO is just about impossible for other FPS games right now.  It isn't because CSGO offers a more tactical experience, more challenging gunplay, or that it better rewards skill (though CSGO does do all these things).  The reason CSGO is such a hugely watched esports game is gambling.

CSGO has an enormous gambling scene.  Weapon skins that drop in the game can sell for hundreds of dollars in steam funds (though most just cost a few cents).  These steam funds can be used to purchase any game on steam (or other weapon skins).  Right now there are tons of sites that allow players to bet these dropped skins on professional matches.  It is not directly gambling money as the money never leaves steam.  There is nothing in place to stop children from gambling, and it seems the allure of gambling combined with their love of gaming makes for an incredibly addictive combination.  I forget the last time it happened, but when a match is not on the major gambling sites the viewership is very oddly low.

When there are major tournaments (tournaments sponsored by valve) then just watching has a chance to get you a dropped skin.  You can watch in the CSGO client or on twitch (they link to steam).  These dropped skins have the potential to be some of the most expensive, as they are labelled as 'souvenir' items and given a special logo with the signature of a professional player.  These items are incredibly rare, and sell for quite a bit.  When they are on good weapons, have a rare skin, and have the signature of a favorite player, they are worth absolutely insane amounts (a factory new souvenir dragonlore awp from before player signatures sold for $10,000).

Overwatch has no way to compete with CSGO until it offers a way for children to gamble.  I don't see any way for it to happen right now (nor do I think it should, I think it is a huge problem), so Overwatch won't be competing with CSGO anytime soon.
I am confused why Counter Strike is such a played game on PC. You would think that Call of Duty is the same shit over and over again every yeah but COunster Strike takes the cake. That game hasn't evolved much over the years. What's even more baffling is that CS 1.6 is the most played one and that thing is ancient. It's super unrealistic physic and handling of weapons too.

If anything Overwatch is competing with Team Fortress 2 because it definitely gives me the TF2 vibe from the gameplay.

Besides Overwatch has the potential to be huge on the xbox one and ps4. Counter strike is dead on consoles, the biggest fps dogs are Call of Duty and Battlefield. Call of Duty literally dominates the market. Surprisingly COD is pretty much dead on PC but that's probably because most people can't run COD on their PCs. CS on the other hand runs on a toaster. COD is the biggest dog in the fps market and Overwatch doesn't need to compete with that as it's made by the same company.

Overwatch will be the TF2 replacement imo! And it looks way more fun than TF2 which by now is running long in the tooth as there is no sign of TF3.

There's a good reason Blizzard makes everything with low poly graphics- it's so people with low or midrange computers can play the games.

I honestly believe most of what made WoW so successful for so long is that you can run the game on almost anything.
This is why I think games like Counter Strike, Dota, WoW etc. are so succesful. Even my calculator can probably run that game. Now those COD/Battlefield/Doom requirements are too high for the vast majority of steam users if Valve's stats of hardware are anything to go by.

BLizzard will never make a game with insane system requirements. IT's just not how they roll. Blizzard actually focuses on gameplay and that's usually what wins people over. That and the insane replayability their games have.

I'd wait until the game is a thing first, seen too many 'demo's that just didn't look like the finished product, only have to look at games like Watchdogs etc. and then there are the system requirements, chances are to even approach that level of detail you will need a high end rig with dual 980ti's or something equally stupid, which probably means that to get those kinds of graphics, it will be a PC only game.
Also, the tech demo of 1080p at 60fps was it run at that resolution because of the system requirements, would you need for instance, twin titan gtx's to run it at 2560x1440? do many people still run games on their systems at just 1080?
Probably irrelevant though as i doubt the finished product will look as good as the tech demo, they hardly ever do.
Do people still run games at 1080p? If you are runing 1440p then you are in the minority. Very few people run their games at 1440p as not even a GTX970/980 can deliver solid fps with the more demanding games. And most people have gpus which are much worse than those two.

1080p is the standard and that's going to be the standard for the next few years.

So much this. I love gore. Throw in some MK fatalities in and I am sold :D

Do you like... really hate Overwatch or something that you needed to smack on it in comparison to a game that isn't even remotely in the same genre?  I can't possibly see how or why it'd be relevant to Doom 4 at all, otherwise.
Simple comparison between SIMILAR  games,BOTH involve carnage/killing both are fast paced, similar type mapping,BOTH are NEW.

Why Blizzard, they have loads ,boat loads of money so the comparison is fair, you do NOT compare a low budget indie developer game that falls exactly under the same genre, you compare $$$ to $$$.

Why not Destiny?I have not played Destiny ,so how could i compare it?I simply took a money bags developer that SHOULD be able to match ANY other developer and EASILY.Also Blizzard products are MUCH more well known than anyone else's.

BTW designing OW is VERY similar to designing Doom, the difference of course is AI versus real human players, but both create system lag in similar fashion as one has multiple players fighting with animations while a fps might only have 1-5/6 npc's at a time but has the AI to contend with as well.Anyone that knows game design knows that bot pathing and AI is a huge system hog.

[email protected] some responses, you think creating a map for OW is any different than a map for DOOM? Pretty much identical mapping skills needed. You think sounds or music is any different?you think weapon animations need be any different?pfft some seriously don't know a  thing about game design.

Let me sum up this thread.

A crappy game being compared to another crappy game.

    Have times gotten this bad?
  • NephethNepheth Member RarePosts: 455
We get it. You hate Blizzard. Everything that Blizzard does is bad. You have to compare every kitten Blizzard game with some other game and prove that the other game is better. Only good mmorpg out there is FFXI. You have to post in every kitten discussion in this forum and spew your hatred even you don't know anything about them. And you must hate everything. Don't you ever get tired? Sigh...

Oh god that's funny.  Doom sucks. Overwatch is way better.

As a Quake player, can I say that both Doom 4 and Overwatch suck for multiplayer?

It's the same as comparing WoW to DDO. One is good and the other is popular.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

You are literally grasping at straws to try and justify comparing two games that are still not even remotely close to each other in what markets they are trying to fill.  You base comparisons between two games off of two games trying to fill the same genre, not petty biases.

Looks amazing ,very high detail.I think many will like the sheer carnage of the Chainsaw :)

Trying to compare this with a Blizzard product is impossible,Blizzard continues to make low poly games.Nobody can tell me these graphics don't make a difference because they make a HUGE difference to my gaming experience.

I love how everyone says Overwatch is better than Battleborn but as soon as someone says anything is better than Overwatch it's "they aren't in the same genre".

Newsflash neither is Overwatch vs Battleborn.
