    Ad blocker happened.

Ad blocker is your own fault, and you know that.

Need to remind you how you handled the Scarlet Blade ads? When A LOT of posters told you they were installing ad blocker, and still it took a full month before you even bothered to care, then started to beg for us not to use it?

I'm not using it anymore, but I would if I visited this site as much as I used to. The asian semi-pedo style of ads on this site isn't exactly appealing.

Or how about that time I clicked on a League of Angels ad and the Final Fantasy 14 trailer started playing in the most blatant example of copyright theft I had ever seen?

I just ignore the ads.  They have to pay for the site somehow.  Again there is nothing wrong with sponsered threads either.  As the old saying goes buyer beware.  Some of these games like this one could give you a brief bit of fun verses another big download.

As long as they always clearly mention it is "SPONSORED", I am fine with sites doing this.

Some sites will use "ADVERTORIAL". Some sites don't mention you are reading an ad or use tiny letters, clearly that is bad, but here mmorpg.com clearly mentioned it is sponsored in the title, which is how it should be.

It is similar to advertising, but it is on-site, so it is not in-your-face and there is far less chance of malware.

What some sites are doing it blocking people who use ad blockers. That isn't going to last forever, because there are now add-ons and browsers that camouflage which add-ons you use (as it should, because if a site can tell which add-ons you use, they can uniquely identify you, which is really bad from a privacy standpoint). Second, gaming and tech sites have a much larger audience that uses ad blockers, you are basically shooting yourself in the foot if you block ad-block users on a gaming site.

Also, unlike ads, you actually get to read a story / article, so it's somewhat more interesting still.

As long as a site is honest about it, most sites use the "SPONSORED" tag, and make it very clear, I am fine with this.

Seriously? How is this crap sponsored? In 2 weeks, 2 BIG crap Pirate games... Want a good Pirate game, look at Pirates of the Burning Sea, that is how it should be done... Not this crap with 80s graphics...

I'm tired of Sci-fi and Fantasy MMOs, but if you're gonna make a Pirate themed MMO or any other theme even, do it fricking right instead of coming up with shit like this...

Sorry to all against "sponsored content" but this is the new Internet...and as Bill said AdBlocker is the reason. We have seen a rise of ad blocking from 20% 3 years ago to almost 50% today on our site (which is the norm for gaming or "techie" sites). Sponsored contend is the new ad format that ABP cannot (currently) block. We are trying to be honest and make sure that we make it very clear that we are paid for these content items and we will never allow them to be opinionated...just informational.

Why on earth would anyone ad block those?  They're comedy gold!

As some who uses an Ad block, I make sure to visit every "Sponsored" article you guys put out.

I do have a a few questions though, do you receive money for the amount of people that view the article, or is it a flat fee?

Also do you receive any compensation if I would click through the links in the article to the game in question?

because it is in the sites predefined guidelines of what they accept as sponsored articles, and I assume money has changed hands. . .

Because in the real world -- where people don't play games for 5-10 hours a day -- money must be made to keep sites like this running so you can continue to have a place to boast about your oh-so-awesome gamer "skillz".

But if it makes you unhappy, then demonize it, blame it on greedy corporations, or start an occupy movement. Whatever makes you feel better after realizing this isn't a welfare state where everything is free.
