Andy Serkis, actor of note from Gollum in Lord of the Rings to Caesar in Planet of the Apes, has a role in Star Citizen's Squadron 42. Serkis took part in a recent motion capture event at The Imaginarium that was caught on film. Check out the video below to see how it all went down!

SC has some amazing talent for Squadron 42! Gary Oldman, Mark Hamill and now Serkis?! Nerdgasm!

The Wing Commander and Privateer series had Mark Hamil and John Hurt, amongst others, so well-known actors are no strangers to Chris Roberts' games.

SC's sizeable budget just allows more big names to be added to the Squadron 42 lineup.

Isn't it kind of a huge waste of money to spend on an actor like that instead of putting those money and resources into the game? There are plenty of actors and actresses for video games that are by far, cheaper than Andy Serkis is...

And if Peter Jackson had thought the same for LOTR the films might not have been quite as good.

Hire shit actors there is a very good chance you get shit acting and a shit film.

Hire great actors there is a very good chance you get great acting and a great film.

The lines between films and games are blurring all the time so why not use great actors for what might be a great game?

Um, there are actually plenty of excellent voice actors out there that would be far, far cheaper than Andy Serkis. The thing is this game is using people's money-I just hope they aren't wasting it frivolously.

Wow, best asinine comment Ive read this month.

So you have taken the quantum leap from considering this game...a game, and just rolled with the rubble and given this a flat movie designation to suit your defence. So..."Star Citizen:MMO-FPS-simulation-emart-racing-COOP-cashcow-TPS-TRPG-SRPG-arpeegee-MOVIE" now? Rubbish defence is rubbish.

News flash here hotshot, Andy Serkis, Gillian Anderson, Gary Oldman or that Undercover Bastard Wife whatever-its-actual-surname-is...ISNT going to matter if the game isnt worth two pennies. He could have invested all these top dollar actors' fees (and the washed out wife's salary, cause god knows she is getting paid to act moronic on screen/with voice) into making a completed, working game and Then brought along the famous voices in later expacs. But oh yea in CRTown, failed movie careers are given second winds with donation money and selling cast name stubs of famous actors go hand in hand with selling expensive jpegs.

Peter Jackson just threw up on an intern somewhere after you insulted him so grotesquely with that insinuation. You have earned many misforgivings from a puke covered intern this day, friend.

I was banned for pointing out the obvious faults in a game 2 months before it released.
Now after release, repeating the very same words from back then would be like preaching to the choir on this site.

Thanks for calling me a hotshot...I guess.

And seeing as using actors in his games is part of historical fact I don't see why you or anyone else is getting all bent out of shape.

And thanks for failing to see my point in referencing PJ, which was to point out that Andy Serkis is a quality actor and famous for his Mo-cap work and so using him for.....drum roll.....mo-cap work is not a big deal.

Think what you want, rant and rave all you want, there is nothing unusual, bizarre or unrealistic about this report at all.

I just do not get the logic you guys have complaining that they should be spending the money on the game when.....they are spending the money on the game.

You are all too red with anger to see the Forrest for the trees and realise it is just an actor doing his job in a game with a creator known for using actors in his games.

Being angry and upset won't change that simple fact.

And if they used "cheaper" actors the cries would be "why not use better actors? What are they spending the $100 million on, yachts? "

Hiring high end talent is fulfilling one of the goals from the crowdfunding campaign. They are doing what we hired them to do.

The voice actor for Gollum in Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor does an equally good job as Serkis for probably a lot less money.

Serkis could be easily replaced in most of his films by someone else with not much loss to the quality of the film. Sort of like Warwick Davis.

To be fair Andy's strength is not voice acting but motion capture, and for that, he is the king.

It is sad though that they over use motion capture to do face capture on the big name actors playing humans, instead of shooting live footage. Looking at the earlier Gary Oldman CGI stuff, that goes straight into Uncanny Vally.

Wow, that's... a really stupid comment.

They should be spending the money on adding actual content to their 'game', not fluff like celebrity voice actors. There are plenty of people within the industry who could do top notch voice work  for a fraction of the cost.

By the way, there are plenty of movies and games which cast famous actors and still come out as utter shite. Examples:

Star Wars used actors who were mostly completely unknown, and episodes 4-7 are considered some of the best films ever made. Well okay, not 7, though it's still decent.

Wing Commander used well-known and talented (some of them, anyway) actors and was an abysmal piece of distilled failure which everybody wants to forget, and with good reason. Roberts got shit acting and a shit film, though I'm sure his shit directing and production probably played a role in that as well.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

I've spent over $600 for a hangar full of ships on this vaporware. Release a damn game already. No Man's Sky will be out soon for crying out loud.
