Nothing I've read makes me want to play this.  Solo, easy-mode, and only forced Open world PvP to do at endgame.....nope.  Sure is pretty though!
This sounds to me that you are reading only what you want to "hear".

I'm a typical soloer and I've grouped in this game more than I have in a long time. Easy mode? Well, depends. I don't know why it's this way but it seems that this game is more about fighting groups of mobs. If you fight light red/red/purple mobs you will get great xp if you are in a group. Having said that, we've had some dicey spots, especially fighting large groups of trolls.

The ranged hit hard on our Wizards and I was caught in between a group of rushing trolls that meant a quick death.

If you just take green mobs one by one then sure "easy mode" and you only have to be solo.

As far as only "open world pvp" at end game, this really isn't an end game game in that trading, horse raising/selling crafting can be done at any time. Also, guilds get summon boss scrolls and then fight those for a variety of things at end game.

I think there is a post in this forum explaining all the things one can do that aren't pvp. Now, you will still have to deal with pvp in one way or another but that is what it is.

edit: I can't find the post that was made about all the options of game play (I went back many pages but didn't see it) but maybe this video can at least explain things.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpBKXG5VK3s

I'll ad that, last night in guild chat, there was a long discussion about horse breeding. Not sure now many games have that sort of things happening.

That is an interesting statement. From what I gather when people explain this game, it almost feels like they are explaining a modern version of EQ. I wouldn't say its exactly the same of course, but very similar as to what an old EQ vet would be looking for.

Isn't that easy in any MMORPG? ;)

Go solo against red mobs and you'll have more fun, and better XP per hour and loot too. And if you want the extra thrill, go at night. More XP, more danger.

I'm always amazed that when a game offers the player the choice of difficulty, the forum goers just consider the easiest option and use it to label the game "easy mode".
As soon as I found out that white mobs were easy I started fighting mass red mobs. Much more fun that way. I've done two purples at once but as a melee that had its issues.

One thing I wanted clarification on, do any of you know if expansions are included or are they separate like Guild Wars?

Also are you forced to PVP or can you un flag yourself?

Last but not least, how is the current community in the game? In other words are there a lot of PK guilds that are spawn camping individuals without guilds etc?

I lied, one last question. Is it one shard?

Also, I have heard that it is not really that group friendly, is that true?
With all the hype and people talking about how much they love it, I'm just not sold. And I get tired of spending money on games that I don't end up playing. What's the hype all about?

    Good Evening,

I've been on the fence about this game for some time. I decided to give it a go and see what it is like. It says i get a guest pass. Once I set everything up. If you like i can PM you the pass. Not exactly sure how it works but with it you can at least try it out to see if you like it or not.

Yes I would love a buddy code to try it out if you have one to spare!

Usually, with Asian games, updates/expansion are included. I don't know of any that charged extra.

You can be unflagged but you will lose xp and they will get karma if they attack you. You can't really opt out of pvp with the possible exception of not getting to level 45. I've read there is a quest that gets you there. If that is true then not doing it will keep you under. Not what that affects and if it's possible to stay like that.

There are pk people and pvp heavy guilds.

There are three servers and each have multiple channels.

Once you hit the max level though, you are really just farming items for crafting / better loot right? Is there a point to farm XP past the neccesary point?

Well, you will probably not be able to farm summoned bosses as 44 seems too low.

Since I don't have any direct experience with "late game" I can't really tell you.

I hate to dissuade people from the game but my opinion is that if you are concerned about being pk'ed and having to change areas then the game might just not be for you. Why put yourself in a situation that you just want to avoid?

I am actually not worried about being PKed. I was just curious if the XP system worked post max level. In EQ you used XP for aa's etc, i wasn't sure if this system was like that. It sounds very interesting though and I am considering a purchase. I think I will do a little more research first, thanks for the replies.

To the OP:   If you will give the game a legitimate try.  Msg me for a key.  I personally love the game but it is not for everyone.  It's a game you need to be self motivated to accomplish things as the game doesn't tell you what to do or how to play.  Some days I just craft, use the workers.  If I want to kill things I go grind.  If I want to quest I go quest.  Even during mid play session if I just want to kick back, I'll process some items or cook while I check out the market place on what is a current money maker etc.  If all you want to do is just 1 type of thing, the game will be boring.  It's built to take part in all it has to of offer.  The game is by far the best mmo I have played in years.

To add a bit to the OP's question....how long did it take for the game to "click" for you?  I've spent a few hours and am trying to take advice from others to take my time, talk to everyone, explore.  I'm a very smell the roses kind of player anyway and love just muddling around in an exploration game like ESO.   To date, things aren't clicking yet for me and I'm not 100% hooked.  I am not one to give up though so will keep plugging away for a bit.   If it still doesn't pull me in, at least I've given it a good try.

I'm also finding BDO a bit awkward with all the controls, combos, etc.  I started off playing a ranger, one of my favorite classes in other games, and don't find it that fun.  Any advice to minimize the keyboard gymnastics?  Is there an easier class to play that this old gal can master?

Sorry to sound like a newbie and I'm certainly not complaining.  I really do want to like this game and play it as a secondary game to ESO which I still very much enjoy.
Advice from one old gal to another - try all the classes at least through the first set of imps though Velia would be better (get there around 9 or 10 if you follow black spirit quests).  I thought for sure Valkyrie would be my favorite but surprisingly Sorc is though it's trickier to play.

For combos (which are hard for me) I just pick one and use it for quite a while until it becomes routine - then I work on another one.  It's very slow but works for me.

Most important advice - be sure to turn on all your quests - press O and click 'All' in upper right - by default the game starts with only combat quests turned on.  For me combat is the least part of why I love this game, it's all the rest of the stuff to do that has me enchanted.

There isn't any alternate advancement but there is no level cap. There is a soft cap at 50 and then it takes quite a bit of xp to continue beyond that.

Might be waiting a long time.  BDO isn't the usual clone.  It's an exceptional game that will cater to players with a level of patience that don't have a problem with enjoying a journey and can appreciate a game with depth and variety.  It's not for the combat-centric content locusts whose only quest is to rush to end game and jump on a forced-grouping dungeon/raid tread mill for +1 gear, or engage in PvP because that is where the game begins for them.  Most of the people hating on BDO fall in those categories.  Frankly, the game is better off without those types of tired end-game content, and by extension its respective player demographics.

FYI you don't hit max level in this game. Although it has a soft level cap at 50 you can level past 50 at a drastically reduced pace.

I might also add the following:
    - Quests are not your primary resources in terms of traditional character leveling. Quests are usually means during your exploration or more importantly during your personal progression as you're building and maintaining your own economy throughout the world. You can easily find yourself doing hundreds of quests without dinging a single level. Killing mobs is your primary exp resource if you want to reach level 50+ fast for some reason. Level 50 is doable under 20 hours or so but then you'll have to catch up on exploring the game itself anyways.
    - You can wear basically any gear from level 1 since gear has no level requirements. Loot is usually things you make money from and they are not single upgrades like they are in most Western MMOs. You have to learn the game itself and find your own way of enjoying it since you have to earn a lot of money efficiently to gear yourself as high as you want to.
    - By leveling your character you unlock more and more skills even past lvl50. It's basically the higher level combat skills that make you want to level your character.
    - This game is probably the most beautiful MMO out there and its visuals (at the highest settings) are comparable to even the most beautifully crafted non-MMO games on the market.
    - This game has no instanced content so far. Even dungeons are open.
    - This game punishes death by taking exp away from the player. If you die too much on a world boss for hours you can easily find yourself losing considerable amount of experience points.
    - Your combat skills have preset key combos just how fighting games do. It is advised to use them instead of your skillbar keybinds since using the hotbar eats up your mana pretty fast. Using the preset key combos are more effective.
    - There is so much stuff the game doesn't explain and actually reading quests helps you understand its mechanics especially in early stages.

BDO is a beautifully crafted GAME. Play it as you like it. Discover the world, discover crafting, discover the Amity system, discover the node system and how workers could make you money, discover trading (I mean not the AH itself but doing trade runs for NPCs and making your own strategies work), discover combat on different classes, discover the community or whatever you like to do in a GAME. Oh wait and there is open world PvP too. Don't ever force yourself into things you don't like in BDO since it has so much to offer.

Actually, most of MMOs are most fun at 'Honeymoon period'.
I'd not play EQ or WOW at this moment. I think every 'online' game has its own time to play fun.
And definitely this is time to play BDO imo.  2-3 months later.. maybe its not fun as much as now.

There are many ways you can play ranger. I personally took tearing arrow as soon as I could, heavy damage plus knockback (I just personally prefer over blasting gust). Kept spirit healing ('cos TA eats mana) and bow skill maxed. Took descending current at 37, awesome AOE, and now I slaughter everything :).

A lot depends on your preferred play style. For PVP the prevailing wisdom seems to be based around evasive explosion shot and charging wind (only knockback that works in pvp consistently). But yet to try that myself.

Gear is very important, be sure to keep pushing for higher bows to +15 and armour. Makes a hell of a difference.

uh.. Didn't want to do questing, so I caught a horse out in the wild , called him "Diablo", wanted to find out how I bred him with a female variant until I decided I wanted to make a new character, a Megan Fox look-a-like, found out that my horse and unlocks and warehouse carries over and is account wide, so l got caught up in trading and bought a wagon instead, so now I'm out grinding quests so I can unlock more trade routes ..

pretty much sums up my experience of the game for the past couple of days.

edit: definitely not liking the forced pvp I hear about, but am not at that level yet, so I'm still enjoying it in my happy bubble.

And there is no reason whatsoever to get up to level 45 unless that's what you want. There are no level requirements for fishing, trading, crafting, horse breeding, etc. You can be a top-tier non-fighter at any level if that's what you want to do.
