Gaming can go full circle with trends and concepts. Back in 1997 Ultima Online created a concept that allowed large groups of players into a digital sandbox to grow a fantasy world together. EverQuest picked up the ball and ran with it scoring a huge touchdown by taking the game from an isometric view into a third person view.

Only one reason any nostalgia is happening,,budget ware developers.

They can't make a better game, they don't have the money or manpower.People are supporting these like they are some great masterpiece when all they really are is a throwback to ancient tech ,often aged graphics and my biggest peeve....locked cameras.
We can not only do much better,i expect much better as i am not paying anyone 20/30/50 bucks for a 20 year old game.
Point being if i wanted to play Baldur's gate,i own it,i can play it anytime i want.I don't want to play those games anymore, already spent hours on them,i want something new and more advanced.

Garriot's game is a pure money grab.  I really doubt it will ever be very popular except for the people that dumped cash into it.  It is very obvious that Albion Online can be played on tablets, the graphics are atrocious.  Not sure a pure pvp game like Das Tal can make it.  Shards has some possibilities.

Herein lies my biggest complaint with these throwback titles, they play like a game from 1999, Shroud of the Avatar just feels like an old game. The controls and camera just aren't smooth and the gameplay is clunky and unintuitive.

I love the idea of some these and keep hoping that someone will make a modern game with modern graphics and smooth controls and animations but maintain what I consider classic MMO game play (Holy Trinity and Target/Ability combat) while adding in some of the features of modern MMO's like large open worlds and non-combat gameplay.

Is that too much to ask?

Well... The pretty graphics and crappy gameplay is getting old so i am glad that these type of games are being made again. Too many people want a pretty game but with no freedom or depth just a hand holding experience.

I think Ever quest took the genre into First Person Mode? Not Third, correct?
  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332
30x30 maps,,locked cameras are not aspects i would call good and need to be brought back.
Terrible animations or just real cheap models with only 2-3 vertices just looks bad, again we don';t need to bring back BAD when we have better physics, colours, textures etc etc.

Does anyone really want to hear MIDI music/sounds?
I can tell you that a locked camera bothers me so much,i will not play any game like that anymore,it gives me a serious headache.

Why use simple die rolls when you can create more complex formulas that use an arc and not a steadfast number pertaining to a die roll. 2x2 or 3x2 or 4x2 is too simple and boring to me.You can have modifiers based on skill/accuracy,resistance and if a developer is adventurous you can do a LOT more than what old games did.
really as far as game play goes, there is only 3 types ,linear questing, grinding mobs and pvp,so it is not a case of GOOD gaming versus graphics,it is all the same.

Shame it is all so pvp focused. Especially Everquest players and arpg players have been looking for a isometric pve sandbox since .. forever. Shards online is one that also aims at pve players and therefore I think it has huge potential in player numbers, adding the awesome idea of player driven content.. But they need a smooth working model for progression between different shard types and styles.

Though I played EQ primarily in first person, you could also play in third person.

These are all 'next year's models'. We'll see how well they sit after a couple of years of actual play in the wild. The leaderboards of MMORPG past are littered with the present day fallen.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

There is no going full cycle trend, "old-school" MMOs were constantly released over last decade by small indy teams and pretty much all of those attempts are forgotten and/or shut down...

I think the main thing a lot of us old school gamers are looking for is something new and innovating. I personally am so tired of the same Merry Go Round/Ferris Wheel so I want to give you an example of a game that is out right now that I consider new and innovating and I'll leave it to the MMORPG.com column writers to hopefully do a review/column for this game.

It is called PULSAR Lost Colony and it is available on Steam. It is still in Early Access and is being developed by a small group of developers right now (maybe two people?) BUT it is definitely something different and innovating.

A quick rundown of the game is it is a space game where 5 players take on different roles of a crew and your success depends on how each player performs his role. The roles are Captain, Pilot, Weapons Specialist, Engineer, and Scientist. Each role is completely different and there are ship to ship battles, planet exploring, minefields, drones, and much more.

If you are looking for a new innovative game to play, definitely check it out on Steam and watch some Youtube videos. It isn't an MMO as only 5 people can play together at the same time and it is coop, no pvp atm. The game does have its flaws but if the developers can finish as strong as they have started, the game should be a huge success. I have been having a lot of fun with it in its current state and it is definately playable and enjoyable right now.

I quite liked the article and think that the industry as whole could benefit by shooting for smaller scoped "specialized" games.

However after being a part of the ebb and churn of this genre since the late 90s, I find the last sentence, "For now, it is safe to say that MMOs are not going anywhere.", pregnant with hilarious double meaning. Yeah I'm bitter, fucking sue me.

MMO's are obviously "not going anywhere", lol, because they are clearly going in circles !

Unfortunately, the small, cash-strapped indie teams that currently dominate the MMO development scene are all opting for PVP-centric designs. It's the only game design that they can reasonably hope to actually complete.

No small team can hope to build anything with more than a few hours of pre-made content, so they build the terrain, add a few rules and say: "Go forth and kill each other !"

Oh god, not even one good potential game was mentioned.

What ever happened to Elyria and Everquest Next?

    I can only hope.......
I can hope that someone is asking the right questions.
"What worked, what kept player's attention? What made them want to log back into one game time and again?" Instead of......"HOLY SHIT!!!! WoW made HOW MUCH?!!!!!"
  • kishekishe Member UncommonPosts: 2,012
Future is in small specialized games. There will never be another wow because wow took already established fanbase and introduced them to mmo's and quite good quantity didnt play it because it was mmo but because it was warcraft and has quit mmo's altogether since then. Devs need to go back to where they were before wow and aim for that active playerbase of 200k to be succesfull.

Back to old days but not really old. it was 2009 and that game still fresh in my memories. the game that has a very unique mmo style which trully demand a social skill and team work.

the game has six different races which is settled at three different nations. each nations pursued their glory and affection of the land.

their skill, weapon, armor and teamwork are tested in an castle arena which called the Riderium War.

none of game similiar to it.
very unique. giving every players a very good memories to remember.

the game was originally from japan.
has a setting background at dark age of medieval europe.

    we really miss the game.
and wish the game coming back to live.

    the game was Pandora Saga.
