Now as to ref EQ players in general,i was there ,even at the time EQ2 arrived. What i saw was an extremely biased EQ crowd, they were complaining about EQ2 before they even reached level 2.so they obviously had it out for the game while showing no logic in their hate.Yes EQ played differently but it was the EXACT same game as EQ1,same Lore, same type classes, same type combat, even using some of the same quests.
My point here being,i doubt that same EQ crowd/fanbois would give any game a fair shake.

I don't really no how to respond to this, because the games were so different, no real explanation should be necessary. You seem to feel adamant about them being the same, so you clearly didn't really put much time into EQ so even if we gave you a 50 page thesis, you probably wouldn't be able to appreciate the differences.
As far as game play goes, I think they were more alike than different. The developers of FFXI came out and said that they sat their team down and played EQ and basically ripped the core game play mechanics, which is why the two play so similarly.

I don't think it's necessary to get into a EQ vs FFXI debate, as both games were cut from a similar mold. That mold has been tried/refined too little, and it would sure be nice to see some developers give it some love (I'm looking at you Pantheon).

Nice vid, OP - it's always nice to see that interest in EQ style game-play is still alive.
Finally yes i can agree 100%,your logic is sound and actually the EXACT same thing i am looking for.
I am not looking for FFXI or EQ,i am looking for a developer to take those great ideas and improve and ADD TO to give us a fresh new exhilarating game.

I do NOT want to see anymore linear questing WOW clones,we already have far too many of those and personally i prefer to forge my OWN game and not play connect the dots following the same path as everyone else.

Do i think Pantheon can pull it off,to be honest nope.
Reason is i saw the exact same flaws and same game design in both of Brad's games.Yes he added a bit to VG and improved the visuals a bit but overall ,same game same bugs etc etc.My point is that i believe Brad is 100% stuck on just another EQ build but trying his best to present it in a cheaper more cost effective fashion to sup[port a smaller budget.

I have a few basic needs, bring back grouping.LOSE the end game nonsense, create DIFFERENT classes not clones of each other,no questing for xp,no free xp for standing on new pixels of land,no hand holding ..period and lets see some player>player combos instead of soloing ideas..Other than that i am fine with many other EQ/EQ2 ideas.

No offense then, why are you even posting?  Some of this you have to operate off of faith.  Have you actually read any of the posts brad has made?  Listened to any developer podcasts etc?  It sounds like no.  It sounds like you just have this idea in your head and you're just coming here to reinforce that predetermined idea instead of taking new information in and adjusting your position accordingly.

Brad has made many a post stating exactly where he F'd up with previous MMOs and what he intends to do to not repeat those mistakes.

If you're not going to at least give him and his team the benefit of the doubt, then why participate in the community at all?  Just wait for it to release (or not to release in your opinion) and move forward from that point.  I mean seriously.  Why come on here if you think its not gonna happen?  Just so you can come rub it in our face if it doesn't?

I've been pointing this out to him every time he posts in these forums for the last year. He doesn't demonstrate a knowledge of anything that Pantheon intends to offer. Honestly, he doesn't even seem to know what EQ originally offered comparing it to FFXI. On a very general level they were similar. TBH, aside from graphically, XI was closer to Meridian 59 or AC in quality and design. EQ was on a whole nother level.

P99 is great now they have finally released Velious and is truly old school.

However on the official Daybreak they have released some new time locked progression servers which are doing quite well!

They're gearing up for Velious with some big old school guilds coming back.

    Darkwind

    Faceless Insanity

    Rosengard

Seems like the competitiveness is still there considering the game is near 17 years old....

Insane really, I'm trying to think if Pantheon will bring that old school feel to MMO's and move away from the easy 'newb' friendly they all seem to adopt. Fighting for mobs is what made EQ stand out.

Pretty much all EQ vets I've ever talked to about EQ and including myself name Velious as the best expansion of Everquest and there are 25+ expansions to choose from at this point.
    Kunark scores high as well.
So, Brad should def focus on classic EQ type of mechanics and gameplay for Pantheon (especially velious) because that's what makes old school players tick.

Add Vanguard in the mix as a base for class design and we can expect an awesome game, imo.

I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.

A slower paced resource management type of strategic combat, with an Vanguard classes in a dangerous EQ type world is pretty much my dream game.

What EQ did best all boils down to freedom (of choice, not guaranteed results), and consequences (play like a zerg idiot and feel the pain).  Whenever I logged in, I always knew the world was boss and would be unkind if I was not careful.

I guess, it'd kind of be analogous to stepping out into the Alaska wilderness or something, in real life.  You could have great experiences, but you could kind of screw up if you did not plan or pay attention.  No hand-holding at all.  No drama script with cutscenes that you have to follow, none of that nonsense.

Also, screw graphics. The fact that it even enters the picture is kind of indicative of how you judge games.
Considering that the very best "old school" games didn't have graphics, you just might be right.

If your world-creators can hold attention without the pretty-sparklies, then they've built something worth playing.

Interesting post and nice vid, but I found the mention of the guild FIRES OF HEAVEN to be the thing that got my interest up. I was on the same server of that guild, and I also remember a guild called BROTHERHOOD OF THE SPIDER. There were some good players in BOTS, but a  large chunk of them were total dicks. I remember the entire guild being forcefully disbanded and banned for a few weeks ( BOTS) for griefing another group trying to raid.

I miss the danger of old school MMORPG's, but I do NOT miss the clunky combat, the horrible grind and de-levelling that occurred in EQ if you died right after gaining a new level.  The best EQ memory I have is sitting outside the INN  with  a monk pc, resting and enjoying the thunderstorm raging all around us.
The older games had more atmosphere, but a return to the tedious grind and clunky combat is not a good idea.

THE RATHE was the name of their old server, not sure if they had splinter groups on other servers ;)

I agree that Wizardry is an zealot when it comes to XI. However as I was an avid AC and XI player I completely disagree with your second to last statement. The last one well I'm cool with opinion. :)
