    1. LotRO (vanilla)

My favourite period of time playing MMORPGs was the 3 months after the second raid, The Rift of Nurz Ghashu, was released. I'll agree with the OP that the helegrod raid was quite easy, but the Rift stepped it up massively in terms of design and raid mechanics. I have also found that LotROs combat is the deepest I've played in any MMO. Sure, a lot of the content was designed to be quite easy, but some of the endgame stuff got hard. Most importantly, the game really allowed player skill to shine through and I loved raiding in LotRO. The PvP during this time period was also really good fun, even if under-populated.

    2. SWG (Pre-CU)

This was my first MMO and I was relatively young and a casual, so I sucked at it. Still, I loved just being in the Star Wars universe. I'd quite happily spend 3 hours a night grinding rancor missions on Dathomir, simply because I loved my character and I loved fighting against Star Wars creatures! I also fell in love with the Geonosian Caves. Being my first MMO, this was my first experience of "proper" group content. When I finally reached a point where I could safely solo these caves it felt great. I also loved our guild city, Mos Kintha.

    3. WAR (first 3 months)

I'm a warhammer fan, so a lot of my love comes from the IP rather than the game itself. I mixed PvE and PvP whilst leveling, generally sticking to orc vs dwarf territories. There were some truely great locations to visit in that game and whilst the pve sucked, I still got enjoyment out of it. First scenarios I did during open beta were awesome and continued into live. First time my guild claimed a keep felt great (even tho, in reality, it was trivial). Premade scenario groups, open world guild raids to take keeps. First city seige! Some great moments, even if short lived. Also special mention to Mount Gunbad, the open-world pve dungeon. I loved that place, it had some great mobs in there and I enjoyed exploring with the guild.

    Yes. Y?
    1. SWG, the music did it for me.
    2. WoW, seamless massive beautiful world.
    3. Planetside, Large enough said.

    Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven
Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.
As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

    1. DAoC. Even after 14 years, live servers still up and running. Have made many lifelong friends stemming from that game. Pellinor/Varangian Guard If you have never played this game, i suggest checking out the free two week trial. Some great pve, and the best pvp.

    2. LotR. I wouldn't really say this game was great, but good and it is still running. A lot of good memories.

    3. AoC. Another game that had many flaws. Played it purely for the social aspects even though we were one of the top raiders. Rogue Angels :)

Good list, though I didn't really care much for FF or LOTRO. I played both, and I certainly agree with the pros of LOTRO, the world is really true to Tolkien, I just don't like the game mechanics.

WoW, at one time (I beta tested it, as well as played it for years) was an incredible game. Key word being WAS. It has become far to easy, and has been dumbed down to appeal to kids. The biggest challenge playing WoW today is not staying alive, but rather DYING! It has lost almost all difficulty, and it is very difficult to die.

For me, my first TRUE LOVE in MMORPS will always be EverQuest. I lost myself for hours upon hours in that game. The world was huge, the game was VERY challenging, and the players were old school. There was a real sense of community, and most of the players were adults. The only other game that came close for me at capturing that magical MMORPG experience of EQ was Star Wars Galaxies. I've played almost all, if not ALL, of the early MMORPGs, and those two games will always hold a special place in my heart.

Great article, great website! Keep up the good work!

EQ, because it was my first and I still remember many events , the music and locations till today. Although it's long ago and it isn't the MMO I played the most.

DAoC because up to today imo it still has one of the best PvP of all MMOs. It's actually the only MMO where I really enjoyed the PvP.

EQ2, not so much because of the game, but because there I made the most friends and had the best community and guild experience.

P.S. And btw, it is Xsyon and not Xyson. ;)

    1. SWG - I popped my MMO cherry there.

    2. FFXI - Fell in love with the genre forever there.

    3. WoW - Sealed the deal, still play it off and on to this day even with it's dumbing down and ease of play now, it's still up there for me.

    1.EVE
    2.Anarchy Online
3.Warhammer Online ; Age of Reckoning
  • GladDogGladDog Member RarePosts: 1,097
    1) City of Heroes

    2) EQ2

    3) DCUO

The last slot was a big debate for me.  WoW left memories that were rather horrible that I cannot get out of my head.  That still counts as memorable I think.  I decided to go with the positive and fun memories I have from DCUO.

The world is going to the dogs, which is just how I planned it!

Mine are still my favorites, and when looking at new MMOs parts of these games is what I look for to keep playing and paying.

1.Everquest - The community was awesome, I'm still friends with folks that were in my guild. And the Maps were huge.

    2. Dark Age of Camelot - The maps were beautiful, the community was awesome and the PVP has never been as fun as the it was in this game.

    3. Star Wars Galaxies - My favorite of all time. there was a point in playing this game that I was paying 14.99 for 4 different accounts. This was the only game I ever even considered doing such a thing. And I would do it again if any Developer would bring it back. It had the best crafting of any game I have ever played, and the down time when I didn't feel like questing was the most fun of any game I've ever played. Sitting in a camp on Corellia, or hanging out in a cantina on Tatooine was just awesome.

It has been very hard to find any MMO that even comes close to any of these games that I enjoyed as much. Was hoping that The Repopulation would be the MMO I would move to, but alas, not gonna happen.
