1) SWG pre-CU no questions asked
2) UO - wide open world with no obvious quests. Very different at time and still one of the better games out there even now for this type of gameplay
3) Ryzom - monsters that migrate with the seasons and realtime in game seasons in a wide open map made the game feel very dynamic. Creating your own skills and crafting items was very different and something many games since have tried to get right and still not come as close as this game did.
Honourable mentions to Wurm online and Xyson while not on the same level still felt like they were worthwhile experiences....
Honourable mention of games that were so vanilla I got bored right away
LOTRO
WOW
FFIV
FFXI was my first TRUE mmo, and it left an impression on me that lasts to this day. I've played FFXI for 12 years, right up until FFXIV ARR was released.
EVE-O's gameplay and systems still draw me back in, even after 8 years of playing. Some people tend to call it spreadsheets online, but until they immerse themselves into the combat (both tactical and otherwise) they have no clue what they're speaking of.
City of Heroes/Villians was a game ahead of it's time imo. The power palettes, the variations you could come up with... all these led to a unique game. It broke my heart when they decided it "wasn't making enough money" and just outright canceled it.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.
Mine are WAR, Age of Conan, and WOW. I have fond memories of Fallen Earth too, if I had cared about the IP, I would've played SWG and I'm sure it would've been on the list.
does anyone even know Wurm Online or Xyson even exists?
I have only heard that Wurm was a good sandbox or had a great crafting mechanic. Xyson only heard about the hype that it was the sandbox that was going to kill DF.
Never heard anything about the combat of either so assume they were lackluster.
City of Heroes / Villains
Earth & Beyond
Auto Assault
Honorable mentions go to Tabula Rasa and Shadowbane, the latter of which had my most favorite class ever, the Confessor.
PvP in Shadowbane was tolerable to me solely because all the mouth-breathing, ganking little idiots infesting modern PvP games hadn't swarmed to the MMO scene quite yet, though it was beginning.

If It wasn't for the SW/LOTR connection I probably wouldn't have played them.
It's memorable for visiting Mos Eisley/The Shire for the first time. Won't ever forget that.
