Well, I did like a very old game called 'Freelancer' .... I am guessing and hoping that Star Citizen will be a persistent universe allowing players with an economic and exploration interest to enjoy the game without being jumped by all the twitchy little FPS squits.

and use the money to finance your exploration expeditions (with anything from a starter ship Aurora explorer version up to the full scale multi-player science ship Endeavor).
There will be a PvE:PvP slider. If you turn it all the way to the PvE side, you can avoid a lot of player encounters (but you still may be jumped by NPC pirates). This does work best in the heavily policed inner systems. You can also avoid more players by using stealth versions of ships. However, do not expect to completely escape from player pirates with a fat slow ship in the wilder outer pirate systems with no police or navy, no matter what your slider setting is.
Chances are good that you will have a lot of privacy, if you are far out, looking for jump-points to new systems all for your lonesome on long solo cruises. Away from ship routes and pirate hunting grounds. Finding a new system may be as rare as the first permadeath Jedi in old style SWG (before the changes)

Thanks! This is exactly the help and advice I was looking for!
Wouldn't it be better to buy Elite Dangerous for $30 and have a fully functioning game that seems to fit the bill?
I have actually bought that on Steam but not played it for more than ten minutes. It just seemed like an FPS/flight sim than a persistent universe which is what I am interested in.
You were able to figure that out in 10 mins, nice. Well, in that case I recommend you buy a nice fleet for SC, put a few grand into it and you'll be all ready to go when it launches. Like you said its probably cheaper if you buy in now, so you could be saving thousands of dollars if you buy up in advance.

I recommend you give E:D a second chance and some more time. It lacks the avatar aspect of walking around like in SWG but especially for an explorer like you there is literally a whole galaxy to explore.
And people DO find things, although its hard work e.g.
I can't say much for the game itself in terms of where it is. I've put down money on games before they were fully developed. You know getting in Betas etc, last one was Blade and Soul. I can't say I like that game much. I would probably say you should wait until you get more concrete information or perhaps like another poster said buy the lowest one and then just check on the forums/official site in terms of their release dates. something tells me if you put money down you are going to keep track of your investment so I think you'll know when or if you want to put more down.

[mod edit]If you can tell in 10 mins that Elite is a FPS/flight sim, but are willing to spend $150 on a game that has not been released you might as well go the whole hog and buy a whole fleet. You could either use that to crush your enemies in SC or sell it for a profit since the prices of those ships will no doubt sky rocket as time goes by.
I used to play a great game called Star Wars Galaxies which, though rudimentary and full of bugs, was so vast that you could just log and do absolutely nothing, and yet still have a great time. I used to wander about in my space yacht and watch attack ships on fire in Kessel and then maybe shuttle down to Moenia and go out to milk Banthas before maybe having a little tea at the Emperor's Retreat. Then I might round off the trip by sword-fighting Night Witches on Dathomir for their crystals.
Do you think - if it's ever finished - Star Citizen will offer that kind of variety? I just saw the little BBC feature on the game and the company. It seems legit to me (though I'm not always the best judge). Maybe I'll sink $150 into a freelancer package. Is that a farsighted investment? Or the gamble of a deluded rube?
+1 for the Blade Runner reference!
Everything I have seen or read suggests SC is nothing like Galaxies, truly nothing has ever or will ever be like Galaxies...
Really a shame how much SoE ran that game into the ground with poor management. It was a huge mess before the CU or NGE people often forget. I, like many people, left well before the CU/NGE due to the garbage that was the Holocron grind system.
JTL was also nothing like X-Wing/Tie-Fighter - far too RPG'd that was the final straw for me.
due to the garbage that was the Holocron grind system.
I always wondered about players and the Holocron grind.
NO ONE forced players into the holocron grind. They ruined their own game on the hunt for Jedi bragging rights. They ruined their own roleplaying in favor of macro grinding ... and wondered why they did not like the game anymore.
They could have just ignored it and enjoy them game.

You could base your gaming on the SC economy

with the ability to now explore a few planetary surfaces, you may find it more to your liking than at first.
Star Citizen is also incorporating the planetary landing aspect

You just have to have a little faith.
