ARK collects money under one premise then asks clients to allow them entry into your hard drive!

OldOldGamerOldOldGamer Member UncommonPosts: 6
As per the title: ARK collects some $40 per acct. I purchased 4 accts for my three children and myself. Then the other day they bring in BattleEye to which you have to allow them entry into your Hard Drive files & folders. I wonder how many minors agreed to this without their parents knowledge and just granted access to the family computer Hard Drive. This game is not worth going into, and can't wait until the law suits start ! Fix your dumb azz boring game v. asking clients to allow you access into their home! IDIOTS !

Isnt Battle Eye the same system ARMA games use to combat catch cheaters/hackers?

    Stop cheating.

I mean that in general, not that the OP or kids are cheating.

Play on your own server that doesn't enable BE... problem solved.

You know it is funny you mentioned this because my anti virus picked up some BattleEYE and flagged it for removal.I did not even know who battle eye was but i think i tried Ark several months ago and forgot about it,must still be on my HD somewhere.I am pretty sure it was on my Steam account.

The only other flags i have got over the last several months was from H1Z1 and that Ninelives game.
I am surprised nothing is being picked up about Wow's Monarch or whatever that spyware was called.

Just read this...considering battle eye has been hacked before and the source code has been stolen I wouldn't feel safe with BE on my pc.

Instead of flaming a company for taking steps in regulating their online play, why not write a letter to their customer service, asking for a refund due to them taking a path you disagree with ?

This is an early access, as such, there will be changes made on the development of the game, this is to be expected and using software which searches your HDD isn't unheard of.

Well it likely is and is likely doing it by spying on your HD,something poster eluded to as not right, especially since underage minors are involved.

I am quite certain they can get in a lot of legal shit for doing that with minors and likely have no warning of such either.
The premise might be a noble one,but there are other methods to detect cheating.I would say camera lock and aim lock detection are ways to track cheating. If a player is logged as tracking and aiming at a 100% rate ,then it gets pretty obvious.

Um, hello Mr (assumed by avatar pic) Online Multiplayer Newb.

Multiplayer games have had anti-cheat programs that install and run in the background for well over a decade now.  Most every game on Steam that has multiplayer uses Steam's anti-cheat program (also known as VAC).   All these anti-cheat programs scan a users PC to make sure that there is no cheat program installed and/or running in the background with the game.

If you want a version of ARK without this, you should have got the XbOne version instead.   Although that is because the anti-cheat program is installed in the hardware already inside the box and MS can already view everything on your HDD anyways.

P.S. ARK is EARLY ACCESS and is subject to change its systems, features, code, and whatever else on a whim prior to release.  This is very clearly spelled out on the game's pages anywhere to purchase it from.  So what they sold you is exactly what you got: a game that will change and add (or sometimes remove) something.

P.P.S.  The only way a "minor agreed to this without their parents knowledge" is if that minor is unsupervised on a PC that doesn't have parental features set up.  All internet web browsers have parental controls and even Steam has parental controls.   Steam has a FAMILY VIEW feature on it that is clearly intended to be set up by parents to allow for safe use by a minor.  It is on the PARENTS, not the games company, take responsibility of what their children do on a computer and to monitor such things.  Take responsibility yourself, and if you cannot then you should take the PC away from your kids if you're that worried about it.

I read up more about ARK as the game interests me but sadly seems to be steam only...I see you can run your own Unofficial ARK server to play with friends family and in that case don't need to have battle eye installed.

I would be curious if you play via private server do you still need to go through steam?

Their community manager has already stated they won't do refunds over this issue in the Steam forums in response to the many threads asking about it.

Yes you do, private servers use Steam CMD so they are Steam integrated.

[mod edit] instead of attacking the guy because he doesnt want this moronic company snooping in his PC you attack him for it. Arks devs are assholes period moronic idiotic assholes who screw up just about every patch and make their own ETA's they miss week after week and continue to still put those ETA's up. They have screwed up balance so many times its not funny or brought in changes that no one wanted only to spend weeks of dev time reverting them back. This company sucks period you can rationalize them like Suzie does here all you wish but if this was a mmorpg company they would of been run out of town by now but because they are some indie dev studio who ripped off the other few dino games out now they seem to get a pass. There community manager is so stupid for example and "the right hand" they both friended me on steam on release of this game asking me how to install sweetfx to get better performance turning down the resolution. The freaken dev did and the community manager couldnt even run their own buggy game or knew how to install third-party shaders.... You get the picture[mod edit]

What is on your hard drive that you are scared to let anyone see?  If you do online banking or run Quicken, you should run that on a VM off a removable drive that you can unplug when not using it.  If you are worried about your porn collection, I wouldnt.  I'm sure there are many people out there with bigger porn stashes than you.

really man? i know you're just being clever which is fine but most people do not want some nitwit dev team snooping their files considering their track record of fixing there own busted game. Its an invasion of privacy sort of like how people do not want the NSA snooping and are still paranoid even though they do not listen to american citizens, though no one in their right mind trusts what they say etc.

You get the picture well most of you wont as you are blinded by this game for some reason and its mediocre.
So they "friended"  you eh? Seems like an unwise decision at this point.

Whatever did they do to you to make you so mad? Ban you for hacking?

As to the OP, I do think they should consider refunding people who don't want to agree to this, especially if done after the of purchase.

Hacking and aimbotting cost companies tons of money.  They have a right to protect their products from tampering.  Now how much of a right is debatable.  If they install code that lets them know if I am cheating that is good.  If they install code that gives them my bank account number then that is bad.  I highly doubt they are pulling bank numbers from people.  I would rather have anti-cheat code on my computer than play a bunch of online games with aimbotting d-bags.

I can not even begin to comprehend how you can link this to the NSA and the fight against terrorism.

Paranoid much? Only people who do that are security researchers of one sort or another. I can guarantee you (from my own family experience as well as others) that no one bothers with that kind of rigmarole.

Private servers (i.e. if you are not the owner/admin) are mostly useless. Simple reason that if the owner/operator decides on a whim to scrap the server and restart, you are at their mercy. Any time you have spent building etc is now wasted. If one spends their life behind a screen (i.e. like some of the anger management trolls who have voiced their ignorant posts above), they might not feel slighted because this is 'life' void of any outside social skills as exemplified via their posts.

With respect to the granting of any company to search your hard drive, you are an idiot if you allow these companies that privilege. The trolls state porn reasons...well we know what you do in your spare time now don't we.....for others, it is simply an invasion of privacy to which the younger individuals have no problem with. Odds are, you have nothing, so why would you worry - ask parents for more money and enjoy your pathetic life behind a screen. For those of you who maybe joined a game to try it with your children, you should have a problem with this. I paid money to enjoy the odd time I can sit and play for an hour - it didn't come with an invitation into my home!

Anti-cheat is a necessary evil, you just have to decide how much info you are willing to give up in the name of fair-play.  For some people, giving any info at all is too much.  For most people, allowing a program that watches for known signatures is enough.  For some people, full unfiltered access is what they are willing to give to be sure they play in a legit environment.  For examples of each, in order, see unsecured CSGO servers, VAC for CSGO, and ESEA's anticheat for CSGO.

Yes, the title is sensationalist clickbait.  Yes, protecting your privacy is important.

That said, both sides of this argument are being way too antagonistic.  Chill the hell out.

Ark and a lot of launchers make deals with third party software companies to install tracking software on your pc.  They don't even have to name the third party software they're installing.  This has been going on for awhile and you would have to go through the running processes and research them to know exactly what they do, and completely monitor your ports and lock them down as needed.

Ahh, exploring the spectrum of entropy vs stasis... Always a fun game. (also known as Freedom vs Safety)

Spoiler: You can't have both, they are diametric conditions at opposite points on a line. To gain one you must be willing to sacrifice the other as you find your happy place somewhere on that line.

    Sorry, it's just reality.

So, an early access game changed something and added software people don't like and what next?  I've been saying this now for who knows how long.

WHEN ARE GAMERS GOING TO STOP PAYING FOR UNDEVELOPED GAMES?

Early virtual merchandise, Crowd Funding, Early Access, Paid Alpha / Beta......it's all bullshit!
