    $5000 for virtual pixels

they should just charge $25,000 like star citizen and make their players hobos overnight

I was just thinking that the next sick scheme will probably be loans if you ain't a whale.

Don't worry if you can't pay in advance, you can pay your debt each month for 12 months long with an interest of 22%.

And a free zombie hat included

We are always in a race what our intelligence can do for us and what our intelligence does to us.

Entropia Universe is more like an online casino than mmorpg, and you can also make profit in the game if you're lucky enough. The game is definitely not for me, but i'm glad there are alternative concepts for mainstream themeparks. We can only hope there will be more variation in the future.

If they can find people who would spend $5k on virtual p2w stuff, more power to them.

I certainly won't spend a dime on this game (probably not even 5 min of my time) but hey, i have no problem if others want to flush their money down the toilet.

That is the way we;ve been heading, first it was DLC then Day 1 DLC, followed by Early Access, cashshops, than crowdfunding, now it all of the above plus selling virtual items before the game releases and/or limited items for huge sums.

We get screwed because the whales are more than happy to spend it ruining the experience for everyone else. 15 dollars a month for equal footing is the best option but many people just want a free game that they end up paying more than 15 a month for. Yes, I am tired of getting burned by failed mmos too but cashshops aren't the answer.

I don't trust new MMO anymore. You have no idea what happens a few months after the release. FFXIV is the only game that has been somewhat honest with their players.

First it was F2P, then it was cosmetic items, then it was power items, then it was Early Access. Now we thousand dollar items, founders packages, etc . I don't care to play these games and lost all interest in them. If a game comes from Korea, I'm not even installing it, I won't play the cash shop circus.

Stuff your casino game where the sun doesn't shine.

It's not like people didn't warn others about this, the MMO genre is no longer about gaming, it's about money. How can you get the most amount of money from players.

I'm increasingly moving away from PC gaming and increasingly play single player RPG on consoles or a co-op game with friends. I'll play the MMO I know, but I'm no longer interested in new MMO, the amount of nickel and diming in every single new MMO, it's no longer fun.

Only if you play with the whales.

If you solo like me, it is great.

The last time I saw them make any good rpg games for consoles was nes-snes-ps1. Whats good these days?

Currently I'm playing tales of zestiria. The storyline is kinda cheezy but the progression system is fun.
There are a lot of good RPGs.  It's hard to compare games like Final Fantasy 1-6 to something made afterward.  I was fairly young at the time, but I did enjoy the art design, music, and story a great deal.  Final Fantasy 2 (US) was probably my favorite.  I was always disappointed they never brought the SNES Romancing Saga series to the US.  I tried them on emulators and they had the art style and music that I liked.

The Mass Effect series were fairly fun.  Knight of the old Republic 1/2 were fun.  Recently I like the Witch 3.  I also like the Witcher 1 and 2 (Perhaps even more than 3).  Dark Souls 1/2 are fun, but can be very frustrating.  I've found myself in an angry mood while playing Dark Souls 2 at times.  Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition is a decent game.  Obviously the Elder Scrolls and Fallout games are all fairly good.

I can't really get into the modern versions of Final Fantasy.  I much prefer the Dragon Quest art style.  I'm hopping they will release Dragon Quest 11 for PS4 in the US at some point, but it appears they are basing that on the sales of Dragon Quest Heroes (which is a completely different game and not a good way to judge sales).

Well i think most realize that Entropia is more a playground to flex your wallet strength and not a serious game experience.

Yes this is happening to our games because of all the idiots who throw money around carelessly.Just like the Ethereal armor i wish there was an Ethereal hand that slapped every person who throws money around foolishly.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

We should open up an MMO where you pay $80 a month to complain about the MMO industry. I think we'll make bank =)

Who would decide what is foolish.  To many people buying video games is foolish.

That is why all these companies keep pulling off this nonsense on us, because the sane players "have no problem" with whales supporting these practices. Ignoring these things makes us part of the problem. Its unfortunate there is no way to fix whales going out of control. It all falls on the company's head. We should have a problem with that because their foolish whale behavior affect all of us as consumers when more and more companies adopt this extortion-like business model.

If more and more companies adopt that it's because the public has shown a general willingness to participate. If the masses didn't like it, the games would change.

In the end it is just your likes vs their likes.

edit - obvious statement? yes. But too many people on these boards think they are special snowflakes and really they are just stating their preferences.

Why are you convinced that everyone donating to this game is doing this in lieu of paying rent and buying food?  Can you imagine living a life that involves having disposable incoming to spend on a hobby?

I've seen allot of ridiculous speculation as of late but this is really kind of weird.

  • Loke666Loke666 Member EpicPosts: 21,441
I can initially spend $60 on a game and $15 each month as long as others who spend more than that don't get an unfair advantage over me. $5000 is something I in gaming things could spend on a Virtual reality kit that allows you to physically run and walk IRL and get that into the game. That is it.

I do actually have magic cards worth about that though (probably more) but I didn't actually pay that much for them at the time, it was over a period of 21 years and I can sell them and actually earn money on them. Paying 5K for something you don't really own and could loose access to whenever the company feels for it is just insane.

It is true that while I certainly would have to spend 6 months of seriously saving money and working overtime to get 5K to spend for a hobby others easily can afford that but I still think that if you spend that type of money on ingame items you have zero imagination. You can certainly find something more fun for 5K and play a game with less pay2win factor.

My friends are just calling me insane because I plan to spend $550 on a ultrasaber (a lightsaber made for lightsaber IRL combat) but that is at least a physical thing that I will own myself.

I've talked to more than my share of wealthy people, I lived in Zurich for a while, where people looked down on me for wearing jeans, fun.

But, I realized the value of money very early. Not everyone understands the value of money, to understand it, you need to have seen wealth, and you need to have seen poverty.

People who are rich, are not the people who will waste $25000 on a virtual item in a game. They know the value of money, they don't tend to have addictive behavior either, otherwise they would have lost it in casinos, these people know how to not only generate money, but how to hold onto it. Holding onto money is just as important as having it, most people who become rich overnight, also become poor overnight. Just like with anything, managing money takes time, it takes skill.

The people spending tons of money in MMO like Star Citizen on the other hand, are people who are infatuated with EVE / Start Trek / Wing Commander, and who don't understand the value of money.

I saw several posts of people hoping their paycheck came soon enough for them to purchase items. These people aren't spending "disposable income", they are literally spending their paychecks.

There was one person on the Start Citizen forums, where his wife already left him after he spend thousands of $ on a ship.

The people spending lots of money on MMO, actually don't tend to be very wealthy, they are just addicted and don't know where the draw the line. $100, $200, $400....just a bit more....$600...before they know it, they spend thousands of $ on a game.

Wanna know the female counterpart of the middle aged men spending thousands of $ on Star Citizen?

If you don't know the value of money, you will soon be bereft of it.  This is especially true if you're rich by means of luck, and lived in a "what if" scenario.  It's so easy to lose it all with excess spending and not taking in account upkeep costs, potential corruption of people who have access to it, etc.

Though once you have your money make money, that's when you start to see superfluous spending such as $800,000,000 boats and someone ordering 500,000 self-driving cars just for the sake of having them.

$25,000 is literal chump change if you're self-made.  Though I have doubts that most who are self-made spend their time buying virtual property as they have to be savvy to get where they are in life.  The prospect of buying air likely won't appeal to them.

That is not to say that crowd funding isn't valuable, but I'd imagine businessmen would sooner invest through proper channels in the hopes to make it back and then some.  This is also not me claiming that Star Citizen isn't a legitimate game that's being produced.  I'll not enter that debate.  But buying virtual property does seem to be where some paths are leading.

In fact, once virtual reality is completely flesh out to the point where you can actually walk inside of a computer game on the internet, I suspect that it will be a huge market.  Exotic and red-light entertainment will definitely have a field day.
Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

I disagree. MOBA is doing well. MMOs with e-sports (like WoT) are doing well.

Sure, mobile is big too, but certainly there are more than one big segment in gaming. And oh, classic mmorpgs are no longer important. THAT, i agree.

People keep making this claim, but it's not true. Sure, the mobile gaming market is growing. That's easy when you put a game on a device that everyone owns and you make it free.

But! For one, mobile games do not make that much money (comparatively). Also, the ratio of people that own computers AND game on computers is far greater than those who own phones AND game on those phones. So, unless you're a very rare bird like Rovio, PC and consoles are still the major players.

But they are much cheaper to develop, so the return on investment may be better.
