The Story of a Gamer who lost it all

I started to play my frist mmorpg around the age of 16. It was called graal i found it and couldnt believe that you can play other people online and not have to play a game by yourself. i Played that game for prolly a week then i jumped to Eternal Lands. It had crafting and pvp, and i also made alot of great friends.
I am in school at the time playing basketball and prolly one if not the most popular guy in my class(Witch my school is only about 400 people). i play EL for about 6 months on and off then kinda get away from mmo for a bout 3 months and get back to being a kid.
Well summer was over and i was lookin for another game and like every noob gamer i feel into runescape. Played it for about 3 months stoped playin basketball, and started lien to my firends. Thay would ask me to go with them then i would tell them i'm doing something else.
I get out of runescape and jump game to game for awhile i'm about 18 now and more and more blow'n my friends off and gain'n some weight for not playing basketball and siting in one spot. I see something is wrong i am getting hooked so i stop playin so much start playing basketball again and get on the fire dept(i'm now late 18 or early 19).
I start playing conquer online to keep me busy on some of my free time. Just like all other games i jump all legs in. I start playin it all day sat. and sun. from the time i wake up to i go to sleep. I start skip'n school about 2-3 days a week i quit basketball and the fire dept, and gain more weight. I also lose my g/f because i didnt spend enough time with her.
I now am 20 just quit my last mmo and i'm tryin to quit them all together. I cant say thay messed my life up i'm the one that sit down at the computer everyday and did it to my self. but i went from 190 muscle jock with a great girl, great friends, and all together a great life. Now i'm about 240 pounds no g/f hardly have my cell phone ring'n and i'm so big that i dont like to go out when i do get asked so i just play more and get worse.

I messed my life up hope you guys have the will power to not do the same. I'm tryin to stop but i'm so big i know i dont look good and i dont want others to see me.

If you do what i did you will lose it all and you will die with nothing but a game and thats no way to live.

This was posted by my friend i know online i have never seen him. He posted it on a diff forum and i wanted you guys to see it. I know after read'n it i will step away from the pc a little more.

sorry it looks weird when i copy paste it. the tabs dont show up.

    He's a horrible writer. LoL

But, he has an addiction problem. If it wasn't MMOs then it would be something else, eventually.

That may be true for some, but not for all. Balance is everything.

I don't believe it simply because of his odd weight gains. As a teen you shouldn't be gaining weight without some sort of special diet, even if you're fat to begin with. If he was he wouldn't be popular or playing basketball. I spend a lot of time sitting at my computer whether it be gaming or studying, and I remain between a lean 180 and 190 pound range which is just under perfection for being 6'5''. It's usually around your thirties when your matabolism slows and you begin to gain weight.

If you're attracted to MMOs it's because your real life was lacking something that you could find in those games. Nobody here is a prom queen or quarterback or star varsity football player. Some of us could be if we tried a little harder.

Depends how much time you actually sit in your chair imo, friend of mine plays far too much and he got a lot bigger than he was - not sure on exact weight of him but his defo a lot bigger :)

Well here is a counter story of sorts.

My life is messed up, my parents broke up when I was young and I wound up getting placed into Residential homes by my mother. I will admit I had a lot of problems as a kid (even when this started when I was about 6) but any problems I had were compounded by the enviroment I pretty much grew up in. When I was about 6 in one of my first placements I was anally assaulted by an older student, an experience so traumatic that I do not remember it, but it bothers me just to know it happened.

I spent most of my life bouncing from placement to placement until my father got custody of me and I eventually managed to get into outpatient, and then out into the real world, despite being a rather messed up and emotionally disturbed person.

I graduated High School, I went to College, and while I live at home I have a full time job (Casino Security). I still take medication for emotional problems. I have no real friends, though a lot of aquaitences, and wonder about the future constantly. If this sounds sad consider that a lot of doctors felt I was a total sociopath and would spend my entire life tied down and drugged someplace.

At any rate, one of the things that kept me going through the years is sci-fi/fantasy, and various forms of escapism. I've been obsessed with D&D at one point to where it was unhealthy, and trust me when I say obsession with a game is not what you'd think from watching a movie like "Mazes and Monsters".

I don't have time for PnP  games much anymore,  and MMOs are something for me to do to pass the time, and arguably help me maintain my sanity.

This is a short version, but the point is that for every person out there who will cry "Fandom ruined my life" (and I've seen a lot of it over the years, talking about everything from PnP RPGs, to computer games, to collecting bloody comic books) there is someone else out there that escapism has helped.

And, you know, not to end a sentence with 'LoL' when criticising someone for not writing well.

When psychological addictions are concerned, I'm more in favour of this opinion, that the object of the addiction is coincidental. The neurological effects come later in the cycle of the addiction, but do not initiate it.

He says he was about 190 and jumped up to 250 over about a 3-4 years.

And to that no one here is a jock thats bull i Played baseball and football in high school and i can bench a nice 245.

My life was good i had no problems in it besides the normal ones everyone gets. I have just always likes games from the frist time i played link on reg N. To when i gota super N and kicked some but with street fighters lol. I just think when you get sick of playin a game by your self mmorpgs is the next step. So to say no one can be a jock is stupid. Thats like saying (from another posts ::::28::) Vin disel cant play D&D.

Unlike him i didnt lie to my friends i did spend to much time on them. But i just got some friends into them so i would have someone to talk about them with. But for the true gamer. Sometimes you might have to give alittle to get alot lol. But i said alittle not your life i know that guy on the pc a great guy glad he is try'n to kick mmo's he needs to.

You're only 19, surely you haven't completely screwed up your life quite yet. Give it a few more years! :19 Anyway, there's nothing stopping you from getting some sort of help, is there? Counselling of some sort if you're really that unhappy? You started gaming at that age where it's easy to become obsessed with things but you're still very young and you'll probably have much less trouble learning to balance things than those who have had this sort of problem for many years. Seriously, there's no shame in getting counselling for absolutely anything. It might sound like some sort of trivial problem but if, at only 19, you feel so helpless against it, you obviously could use some intervention, no?

You haven't "lost it all" yet! You can sort it out before you become a bitter, miserable, doddering old sod of 20-something! Cancel your internet, give away your beer, buy some seriously healthy food, have a good, honest chat with a counsellor, shrink, parent, priest, friend, stranger you bumped into at the local fast food restaurant... wait, no... not him... whatever works.

And good luck with it, too!

I think you've missed his point. He's obviously having difficulty moderating it... otherwise there'd be no problem, right?

I know peoples who have an addiction problem because they spend all their time with their kids.  When the kids grow and leave the house, they suddenly have an awful problem.  Everything in life depend on the alternatives, the choices YOU made.    If someone is sick of an activity, but for some reasons cannot admit it, they will jump on any other activity that take them away from it.  Maybe this guy is sick of those friends and this sport, maybe he want a relief...and maybe he doesn't even realize he is sick of those so called friends.

But, even so. Wouldn't you expect a "popular" kid in HS to use proper words where they are due? I mean. Yeah, granted most of them aren't the smartest ppl in the world, but they know how to talk. If he talked like he wrote he probably wasn't as popular as he claimed, which really falsifies his entire thread. I wasn't a nerd in HS and I hung out w/ most of the "popular" kids and you might consider me one of them, but I wasn't a jock. I dunno I got girls, I had alot of friends, and I had alot of fun... but I never considered myself one.

So When did it start that you have to be smart to be popular? Most the smart kids we had are the nerds. And to see how much you know about how to write. I would know where to put you =). But at my school Everyone gets along so its all good just dont bash people. He is a friend, and for you to say he isnt popular because of some made up itea of the word popular stands for. I think you have no idea what your talkin about. He can be in special ed and be popular if he looks right and plays a sport at my school so back off a little bro. O and have a beer and take it easy your brain has to hurt from all the posting and thinking you do ::::20::
