Xenoblade developers cave to western feminists. Western version censored.

Xenoblade Chronicles X – Lin’s outfits changed in the west.

http://wiiudaily.com/2015/10/xenoblade-chronicles-x-censored-in-west/

Back when Xenoblade Chronicles X released in Japan, one of the talking points for the game was how skimpy some of the costumes were for Lin, one of the party members in the game. Wearing what amounts to a thong bikini most of the time, it appears as though her outfits have been censored in the EU and most likely the USA versions of the game. Check out the quick comparison below.

The more-revealing outfits are from the Japanese version. The ones with less skin exposed are from the European (and presumably North American) version.

With how over sexualized the western society truly is it amazes me that this type of censorship still happens. Whatever, the censored version looks better anyhow, at least more practical for things like combat.

I wouldn't call it caving to western feminists.

The western culture is definitely not for saints, but we are still a couple of steps behind Asia when it comes to revealing skin in video games.

I think it's a smart move to adapt the outfits a little. It probably has little to do with personal values and a lot more to do with business sense. You want to make it sexy enough that people will buy it, but not too revealing to make people call it "the game with the skimpy outfits that is a joke".

The correct balance varies from culture to culture, so it only makes sense. In an ideal world, where development wouldn't cost money, you'd have games tailored to every country it releases in.

Just to point out.....in the game that girl is 15 years old so that might have something to do with that she is a minor

The censorship itself seems to be a joke (not that it's happening, just a "fuck you" to censorship by making it looks so ridiculous). They turned her from a tall chick in bra and panties or bikini or whatever, to a weird looking, muscle-atrophied, eye-patched old midget woman.

Something does look off in the censored picture......she looks shorter and disproportionate

I is way worse over there like night and day.
I have NEVER seen a cross dressing NA at any point on Twitch but i have seen several Asians. The same goes for You Tube,i am sure anyone that follows guitar and music have seen it there as well.

They even have underage girls, not women but girls performing in their night clubs, like age 14 for example.

So i think it shows why they have these absolutely ridiculous sexist clothing. They are definitely 100% delivering a message when they goes for that sexist look.

I commend the change there is a proper place for everything and gaming should not be a part of this WEIRD sexist theme we see in games.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

When people cry more about having naked pixels rather than better game play, is the main reason why games are dumbed down.  Man do I miss the SNES 90's era of gaming.

When they start showing male characters in thongs and bikinis, let's talk. Until then, this is the right decision.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Against censorship as it does not represent the developers original intended design... but in this case the armor is fitting for a combat-like game such as this... though armor does look silly and poorly done, but it's actually better this way.

I heard that the characters are are designed around 13 year olds in JP and 15 for EU/US

hehehe. they actually called those a costume in japan? :)

i think borat wore it once

I can see why one would want the costume changed in their game over here, but I don't get why the outrage that it was changed. It wasn't gameplay or stats that were modified, it's just putting some pants and ahalf shirt on a 15-year old girl. Why is that unacceptable to you?

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

They've been doing that since the 90s.

If anything, men have been clothed far skimpier than women in games.

I don't know any Sega games with topless women, but every guy has his shirt off.

My main problem with censoring games, is that lately, it is people who have nothing to do with these games, aren't fans of these games, and often don't even play games...who start telling developers what they can and can't do.

They have no right to do that, they have appointed themselves as moral authority, they should be ignored by every developer, because censorship is a very dangerous and slippery slope.

This isn't one of those times when censorship has gone too far.
Are you really seeking an "uncensored" patch?
  • KiyorisKiyoris Member RarePosts: 2,130
Any censorship, not mandated by authorities, that seeks to limit freedom of expression by developers, goes too far.
  • mmoguy43mmoguy43 Member UncommonPosts: 2,770
How do you know the developers aren't perfectly fine with censorship? If they tone it down, it means a larger audience and more money.

That censoring games results in higher sales is completely unsubstantiated, don't claim things you can't prove.
  • mmoguy43mmoguy43 Member UncommonPosts: 2,770
Well, their artists wouldn't have gone to the trouble to remodel and texture those character's armor sets if it wasn't worth the thousands developer salaries unless they did know it was worth it.
Yes, I do know what I'm talking about.

Good thing this is probably mandated by the authorities then... =)

YOu see most of the western cultural sphere are sort of touchy about the exploitation of minors... Be it real or not... To the degree of having laws against what can and can not be depicted. ´Context ofc is key... Nobody would bat an eyelid over a random 14-year old in a bikini as part of a general beach scene. That same 14- year old in what can best be described as a soft-core kink outfit in a action game.... A tad bit more difficult to explain away....

But by all means... Feel offended all you like. =)

This have been a good conversation

Yes who care about sensors let's just cave in and sensor to everyone' sensibilities. That's going to work very well with an industry already starving for creativity. /s

Did i say porn... No i did not... You did on the other hand... So i let that stand for you.

Most places in the "west" draw the line for minors WAAAAAAAY before porn...

It is absolutely soft-core kink gear... trust me... i hang around in that scene... Look at the second pic.. the black outfit... That is very much some soft-core kink gear...
