So is this another Entropia Universe?

I'm interested in this game, and considering supporting it by purchasing a ship...it looks really impressive.  One question though...is it going to be another game where you dump hundreds of thousands of real world dollars into to have anything decent  in the form of weapons and ships? I played Entropia back in the day and that game was nothing more than a cash hog with terrible content, in fact I wouldn't even call it a game...virtual casino maybe. By the looks of it this game isn't really even a game yet. When is the planned completion date? Is it going to be finished? I'm reading mixed opinions on this and no real cold hard facts.

You can pump as little or as much real world cash as you want into the ongoing initial pledge campaign. Starting with 54 $  (which might go again as low as 20 $ before X-mas). Once the game launches it has no subscription fee and you cannot buy ships with real world cash. There will be an in game shop for ship skins, basic ship modules and temporary tuning kits. EVERYTHING can be bought in game with in game cash. NOTHING is only available for real world cash. Its a design principle.

There is no fixed completion date. Realistic dates would be second half of 2016 for the single player campaign Squadron 42  and Early 2017 for the Multiplayer open world sandbox Persistent Universe.

Currently you can play the ship dogfight module Arena Commander. That is PvE, Coop PvE, PvP and ship racing. There is the Hangar module for inspecting your ships and a basic version of the Social Module (walking around with your avatar, chatting, crashcar races). Within the next months we expect the FPS shooter module Star Marine, the FPS e-sport module SATA-Ball, the expanded Social Module (with shopping etc.) and a mini PU to test missions and the integration of space and FPS game.

Is it going to be finished? Like with all crowdfunded games that is hard to say. In my personal opinion : yes. In the opinion of a vast majority of 1.033.000 fans ... also yes.

There is a TON of information on the official homepage, tenthousands of player made videos about SC on Youtube, some very good fan pages (like INN Imperial News Network) ... take a peek.

If you are unsure .... wait until its finished.

Very good advice, not just for this project but as general advice for early access, crowdfunding, founders, etc.

I highly doubt this game is going to be like Entropia. In Entropia you had to pay real money to get ammo to go hunt something. As much as I don't think this game will live up to the EXTREME hype it has created, I'm sure there will actually be a game and not be a giant gambling simulator with some sci fi textures.

Unlike Entropia Universe, in Star Citizen you should always get more money as you play and eventually be acquire most everything in-game just through playing and advancing slowly.

There's a catch tough, it looks like you'll have to buy time-limited insurances for the ship or you lose the ship when you're killed. That might create a situation where you'd need mad playing hours/month to pay the insurance fee and fly something really good, or pay them in real cash.

Star Citizen is currently only modules which allow you to test some fighting with a ship in arena, racing with a ship, or walking around and idling with your avatar. At this point the universe you're supposed to play in and majority of the features aren't in game yet and it's impossible to tell how hard or easy it'll be to get good ships and equipment without cash shop.

If you're looking for MMO experience, you should wait with your purchase because the MMO parts aren't really in game yet. If you're looking for some multiplayer arena fights with space ships, then you might want to see if they'd give some good discount for the cheapest pack around Christmas.

Keep in mind that this is a crowdfunded game, and no-one can really know
     a) Will the developers get enough money to finish the game
     b) When will it release
     c) How many of their promises can the developers keep

Back when they ran Kickstarter in 2012 they were still estimating to release the game in 2014. Now it's 2015 and they're estimating to release the game in 2017.

With respect to ship insurance .... it has been stated that the insurance fee will be a trivial amount of money for the typical single seater or small multi-crew ship. So you have to be REALLY LOW on cash to not be able to afford insurance. But that is what guild mates are for ;-) (amongst many other things)

The originally presented game idea (which was much smaller than the current planned game) was estimated to be finished in 2014. With the huge success of the crowdfunding campaign and the enlarged scope of the game this estimate was obsolete even before the end of the Kickstarter in Nov 2012. Back then the estimate by the community was around 5 years based on previous experience with other games ... and it looks like the 5 years are not unrealistic.

See, you had a well written and informative post until you said that.

Disregarding what people think one way or the other in regards to release schedules there is no-way anyone could speak for, or know what "the majority of backers" are doing or thinking.

Starcitizen talk on forums is full of extremely vocal polar opinions from a minority of people.

The community build wiki seems to disagree with you:
     http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Anticipated_Release_Schedule?oldid=7176
That's historical version of the page as it was after edits done on February 2013. Back then the community build wiki still had end of 2014 as estimated release date.

Later estimates of their release dates are interesting. This is official estimate from January 2015.

Out of those items on their schedule on January they've managed to release only Planetside/Social Beta.

I think a potential buyer should know that they've got a track record of missing every estimate of release date they set.

They're also good at providing good reason for why they're late. I don't think there's ever been a time why they weren't late for a good reason.

He is CS's number one supporter on this forum, and maybe in the entire world, he can't help being the way he is.

But there is no doubt the title retains strong support as the monthly donation totals continue at an amazing pace.

Good point .... thats why CIG has stressed in various posts (and in their TOS ... ALL versions of it) that any dates given are not fixed dates and subject to change in the face of technical obstacles ("...since unforeseen events may extend the development and/or production time."). That the whole project is an exercise in open development and the backers share the ups and downs with the development team, both gnashing their teeth when parts of the game are delayed.  Yes, that is something every potential backers should be aware off.

You have no idea how dedicated some fans are and how much time they put into their hobby. Just take a look at the guys and gals that run the Imperial News Network (INN). THAT is dedication.  Compared to them i am a tenderfoot.

I just have my tiny corner of the internet here, because i have been here for more than a decade already and like it.

I think there are far worse supporters than Erillion. He spins and twists everything so that it'd be positive to Star Citizen, but he won't tell any outright lies or resort to any personal attacks when he defends Star Citizen.

There are a lot worse Star Citizen fans than he is.
