You can smell a failure from a mile off!

Theres always overhyped up games that promise features and get stupid people all excited! I'm sorry but if you ever thought DnL or Darkfall would do well then your one of those people.

Now what i said about DnL was proven right by SoG and i'm saying the same thing about Darkfall.

The models look horrible and outta proportion, the animations and skill effects look weak and the graphics/sound are both horrible! You can just tell from look at gameplay videos that the game is just weak and wont be a success.

You can just tell with this genre what will work or not, games like AA and Vangaurd will obviously work, because they both have good companys behind them and look sound!

It is not so much in there smell it is in what marketing stunts they try and pull, lack of information out , how things are handled and experienced gamers that have already been through a few recent flops that saw some tell  familiar happenings.
Mainly folks aren't so hard pressed to play now they say they will do anything if the game comes out now after seeing a few poor releases they know darn well what "anything looks like now"............

Did you really watch the recent video of Darkfall? If you think those graphics are horrible, you seriously need to set your standards to a bit more reasonable level. Every new mmo isn't going to be touting the Unreal 3 Engine. There also were no sound effects, just music...so I don't see how you concluded that the sound is horrible. Yes the animations were a bit choppy, but hopefully that can be blamed on the what they used to record it. Armor looked cool, and character proportions looked good to me.

I'm not saying Darkfall won't be a dissapointment, since you can really only make that decision once you are playing beta. I just think you are making too many conclusions from just one video.

Yeah, I wouldn't really pay the OP any heed. He's blasting Darkfall without having a good perception at it, he's only got 4 stars after 2000+ posts and he's looking forward to "Generic EQ Clone #31239." He's the epitome of a troll and as such nothing he ever says should be taken seriously. :P

Come to think of it, he sounds like a "plant" Sigil would pay to troll on forums. "OMG THIS GAME IS REVOLUTIONARY!" "How?" "WELL WE HAVE FEATURES THAT HAVE NEVER BEEN USED BEFORE." "Like what?" "WELL, DESIGNS AREN'T FINAL YET."

"Your mom is my champion... just without the c... or the a... or the m... the p... the i... and now that you mention it, no, no n either."

eh, regardless of the op's "thread standing" and his hate toward the game...

some of us need not be so naive.  darkfall has been planned and hyped year after year.. actually this game has had more years of hype then a lot of leading games have had hype prior to release AND reviews after release.

this game has been planned longer then both EQ2 and WoW and its not even in beta yet.

we all want the next best thing, but expect this game to fall quickly off radar.

theres a couple of games out there with reputable developers and publishers that havnt stunk up the bandwidth with so much hype.. rather keeping it on the down low until they actually release their product or ..hell know what they really want.

ive slotted darkfall along with games like atriarch, dark and light, tabula rasa which have all been in the initial building block stage for the same length of time.  none ..have proven anything to me or E3

we all want the same thing here, a new MMO to call home.  but do yourselves a favor and dont focus so much on darkfall because it hasnt proved anything to the community yet.  it cant even get on its feet after 5 years post announcement

So you base a game's eventual success or failure solely based on the graphics you see? No wonder why the gaming industry is so stale right now.

  • MattiusMattius Member Posts: 167

I find it interesting that DnL is hyping the fact its the largest MMO out there, when all the research indicates that packing users relatively tightly together makes for a better community.

Were not talking lag hell tight, but if you never going to see 3/4 of the landscape, why waste developers time on creating such a large land mass...

People dont like to "adventure" anymore...they want there travel short, and there action fast.

    Speak for yourself.

Some of my favorite memories in games were IE: A time in Asherons Call 1 where this guy fed me this tall tale of a Fort with vendors inside that sold pyreal armor. Interestingly enough, it was supposed to be in the Direlands.

For about 3 hours we trekked, ran, slid by monsters, killed our way through, and anything else you can think of. Just to reach this fort of wonder.

It was non-existant. No such thing. It was great fun though. Why? Because it was an adventure. And that's what is missing from games.

Everything is just a God-forsaken stale POS game that is just a long drawn out grind. No adventure, no grandeur. Just grind. Kill your 1000th orc, 1000th froglok, whatever.

Games are lackluster, and it's because they try to achieve instant gratification. But there is no such thing as instant gratification. When things are instant, there is no gratification.

Mattius - what on earth are you on about..

some people like slower, exploratory games. HWere a small group can get out and do their own thing.

packing people together is NOT conductive to "better communities" - it only leads to more conflict and competition for resources (camping mobs etc)...

I can understand the OP's feelings about Darkfall. we have gained nothing but crap from small companies, and it wouldn't be the first time we would be dissapointed. ofcourse, I won't have any real oppinnion about Darkfall because I never played it, but considering the Long time it has been in development, and the lack of news we received, I can't say I'm looking forward to this title. I'll just see it out and I'll hear from others if its crap or good.
  • CennCenn Member Posts: 239

Aldaron -you posted just while i was writing.. but yeah - thats EXACTLY what i am looking for in a game. Achieving something means so much more when there is a real possibility of loosing something.

    Risk.

If EVERYONE in a game can eventually get the uber loot if they just grind long enough, or raid enough - then the achievment is basically worthless...

Things which are hard to do - which need planning and intelligence and skill to achieve (not just twitching) - make achievments worth something.

    WORD!!

Same in the early days of UO. Just getting from Brit to Shame or Yew in year one was a freakin challenge all of its own and it was exciting and fun.

The whining of noobs combined with the greed of developers has whittled the MMO genre down to its logical conclusion of boring simplicity... otherwise known as WoW. image

I totally agree with you. In my 5 years of UO, I spent 4 of them adventuring!

In my 3 months of WoW I quit that piece of crap.

UO was so amazing because it was very dangerous/challenging to adventure and explore.. and almost always rewarding! You would always find something after adventuring in the wilds for some time. And, when you're not a noob anymore and know the whole map, its still fun to go into a dungeon and meet another group and just party with them. The dungeons were so big and filled with secret passages, UO was such a thrilling game :( even seeing the travelogues (its a site with adventure logs by some players, google it) is exciting

I'm not even going to compare with WoW, just gonna agree with ya.

    Actually when i said:

I wasnt referring to myself. Spent a bit over three years in UO myself and must have covered every square inch of it in that time, but i dont think I am completely wrong in saying that a good percentage of people currently playing online games attempt to treat them somewhat like a 3d shooter - instant gratification.

I saw this in L2, where people complained endlessly about the travel required to get from one town to the other...(without that mount quest thingo...never got that far btw).

I also see people complain about it in WoW even though that game must have one of the easiest travel loads of any game ive ever played.

I guess if you can fill that land mass with useful quests and genuinely useful content than you got the perfect combination...not having played the game yet, i cant vouch for it one way or the other.

You cant tell me you havent seen a thousand and one people complain about having to walk a few minutes to get from point A to point B?

Yes the pixels are not pwetty enough! oh no.. the wow gamers wont be playing
darkfall oh no ! the world will end the game will fail! what to do what to do!

darkfall is not ment to be a showcase for graphics like wow , eq2 ect ect
darkfall is ment to be about gameplay and real open PvP.

so please go crawl under your pretty pixel rock and stay there

    I also disagree.

Not that there may be a majority of gamers now who want instant gratification, but that I do not, and that I enjoy and prefer a slower game with lots of exploration and adventuring and a large game world which promotes it's size and realism thru realistic lengthy travel and slower advancement.

I think a common misconception is people thinking this game will rule the genre from the hype and development time it's had.
The fact is it most likely wont, there are just too many PvEers and carebears out there to turn head to a game like this. However within it's own objectives I believe it will be a phenomenal success.

You just have to remember that is game won't be for everyone

Also like I've said a hundred times, don't judge a dev team by a completely different team... EVER.

I was hyped up for Silkroad Online but it is do fdamn  rubbish you know that!

But still I thought there would be alot more to do on the game...

I agree. Mattius, I see you agree also. The fact that you think the majority of players want the instant gratification is part of the wool-over-the-eyes marketing strategy of the big corporate entities that have been making the games. I don't believe this at all. I can't prove that I'm right, but I can offer some little evidence.

When UO was released, it surprised all the "experts" who originally thought it would sell 10k copies, then adjusted that to 50k after seeing the pre-release message board activities. It wasn't long and they had over 200k subs, and that included loosing a bunch to ramped PKing. But UO was such a world of exploration and lacked the directional pathways dictated by current games.

Yes, of course the current styles came out and did even better. I won't get into the why's, that can be argued untill the cows come home. But then along came Horizons, not the released version, but the original plan, which had adventure and so much more, and was anything but the directed boredom of current releases. Their site went crazy with activity, for a game that didn't even have complete funding. The demise of that dream along with the strangelhold the current guns have over the industry has lead to, untill very recently, a withdrawal of the posters who wanted more. Folks were just tired of posting what they wanted when it all seemed hopeless. And all along the developers in question were telling people that these ideas, which recently have come to the forefront again, weren't possible, and they had many excuses mixed with more than a little deception to back up their "fact" that you can't make a game like that. Well, we all know that you can, if you're willing to spend the money and design the answers to the tough problems. But in their defense image they were trying to get max players from a fixed market, they didn't need to be innovative.

The times have changed, and the flood of boredom has arrived. New innovation is soon to follow. Adventure is becomming the keyword, like it should be.

    Once upon a time....

Graphics are important, because they tell us something about the level of competence and resources of the devs.

If the graphics are bad it will almost certainly have the following flaws:

    * Bad controls
    * Lots of bugs
    * Not much content

Bottom line is, if the devs have the resources to make a good game (good programmers and lots of money), they will also make the graphics shine.
