The only reason I discuss Star Trek with my friends is to needle the ones that are Star Wars fans.
Here's a few books I'm naming right off my shelf, all excellent or better:
Hyperion by Dan Simmons - SciFi, Excellent ++
Black Sun Rising by C.S. Friedman - SciFi, Excellent +
Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts - Fantasy, Excellent
Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin - Fantasy, Excellent ++
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry - Western, Excellent +
Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb - Fantasy, Excellent ++
Armor by John Steakley - SciFi, Excellent +
Magician: Apprentice by Raymond E. Feist - Fantasy, Excellent
That's just a small sampling. They're almost all the first in a series, so pick one up and give it a shot.
----------------------------- Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

I agree those were good. I only wish Steakley would have wrote more and Hobb less. I have read Armor so many times the book fell apart and I had to get another copy.
Wizards First Rule by Terry Goodkind - fantasy
Homeland by R.A. Salvatore fantasy, this is another I read so many times it fell apart, and I am not the type to reread book. I thought it was that good.
Also for a real good short read I would try any of the Alien books by various authors. They are short but I thought they were all good. I started with Berserker. I dont remember the author since I loaned it out and never got it back but it was good.
