I'm pretty sure it's going to happen. There will be VR games and porn. But I'm just not that into it. It's like another step toward making the Matrix a reality. I will just stay with my computer or a console as long as that's an option. Otherwise, books, as long as they are still around.

In ten years I'll be sipping margaritas made by my robot while my other robot programs my third robot to consider the meaning of life so that I can have interesting conversations while I sip my margarita.

Headsets are not the solution  or the future fo VR, they are only a step in the right direction. Many gamers, like me, do not want  wear something that wlll cause headaches or/and illlness.
    We will see.

And neck issues.  Like forward head posture.
The military already solved this issue.  Some of the NVG's (Night Vision Goggles) are quite heavy and unbalanced causing  the wearers helmet to fall forward on the face.  Even in the newer generation of helmet caused severe neck strain so balance was the solution.  Lots of Marines I know mounted a magazine pouch to the rear of the helmet and then would insert a loaded magazine in the pouch (5.56mm) and that would balance out the load nicely, and some models of NVG actually mount the battery pack on the rear of the helmet.  So this particular issue is well solved, by a couple very simple common sense fixes.

I voted absolutely however, I am speaking to games being available.  I think that will happen in the next couple years, I am of the opinion in ten years they will be a lot closer to perfecting the technology (in as much as technology is ever perfected) and it will most likely be a simple pair of glasses.  Which I realize a version of this exists already but I am hoping that the unpleasant side affects will be gone.

I think the future, or one part of the future of gaming will be VR, and I hope one side affect of that is causing gamer's to get out of their seats and move around a bit.  Exercise, I see far to many unhealthy people in this hobby.  So a little exercise would be a good thing.  imo, ofc.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

In order to be insulted, I must first value your opinion.

I am truly worried about the VR technology I do not feel there is nearly enough long term testing to quantify the long term health risks. You are essentially strapping an electronic device to your head for extended periods, the eye and brain damage risks are astronomical. I wont even hold a cell phone to my head because of the health risks, and they are building this technology to be worn 4-6 hours knowing some people will abuse it for 12, 14, 16 hours at a time?

How can you sit in front of a monitor?! Your brain is being irradiated as we speak.

I am actually more interested in chipping, more invasive? Absolutely!!  Placing a chip in the brain but at least brain chips being a medical procedure are getting real clinical studies and hard medical research.

I keep remembering the orgasm game from Star Trek Next Generation. How much immersion is too much?
Or the VR from Red Dwarf; when they awoke in an unfamiliar world. It would feel like that dream where you wake up but you are not really awake, you are still dreaming.  Head fuck.

absolutely not. If its anything like those 3d glass's thing (that still failed) it will not cater for people who wear glass's, only for those who have no need to wear glass's.
Add that to the fact that it would be just another shitty appliance that would cost a couple hundred quid for something that probably would not work and would have an extreamly limited software that would use it.

Agree totally although I put probably not on the poll.  It would have to be spectacular for me to use it and I just don't see it happening.

Seriously, everyone I know and like would get immensely pissed off with me if I was sat wearing a headset most evenings.

I think that VR sets are coming, but for games with shorter playtime first.

I'd except to play short sessions of some immersive VR game before 2020, but I don't think decade is long enough time to develop the technology to the level where anyone would want to use it for thousands of hours.

Probably not. Everything I've seen about the Rift or other VR, not a single person has mentioned how they expect to sell it. Do they think the identical pictures placed side by side we've seen in some articles is going to work? Perhaps they assume showing some actors flailing around with a black bucket on their heads is going to move some units? Your average consumer could look at people pretending to bowl with the wii and get behind the idea of buying one. With VR, they've got nothing to show people that looks appealing.

Probably not, at least not until the interface involves jacking directly into my head (ok, wireless is fine).

But as others said, I avoid most 3D movies because I can't wear the glasses over my glasses easily, can't see this working out any better.

Not until it is something like "The real adventures of Jonny Quest : Quest World" or Sword Art online or Gun Gale Online.

I'll probably hold off on the first generation until I hear/experience more about motion sickness issues improving. I'll also probably be to old for the fourth generation when things start to actually work well.

I would have said "Yes, absolutely" to anything above 2.5 years.

When you're 60, goal posts only start to matter when you can see them and they are set in 10 feet of concrete. By the time I'm 70 most of the current technology issues shouldn't be issues but mine should be making their own appearances.

Seeing as you have to build a game, ground up, for VR in order to implement it correctly.
It's not something you can just tack onto at a later stage.
I think 10 years might be an overly positive estimation.

I think we will get there, but I think we are looking more at a time range of 30 years,
One generation to "test out" how it works, and a second generation to actually develop for it.

    Zero.

Next 100 years (as if I would even be around)... zero.

VR is the *pet rock* of the decade... people will buy it, then wonder why they did later on.

VR needs a marquee title to make it popular, more like EQ did with MMO (arguably). Until then it will be a novelty.
