Who has code-custody of a child?

FvonSFvonS Member UncommonPosts: 10
In "Design Journal #5 – Families & Family Selection" we learned that newborn have codes attached which can be passed on, so that other players can turn the baby into their character. Maybe I just missed it, but does anyone know *who* has "custody" of the child's code and permission to share it? The mom, the dad, either, the head of the family - or is it more complicated?

Good question! no official answer i know of, but my moneys on head of household getting all the codes. Otherwise you'd end up with a mother/father custody battle.

While I am not 100% certain how to flag children for playing, I do know the following:

-If you get married, you have access to each other's inventory, gold and property, so don't get married if you don't want to share.

-You don't need to marry to have a child. You can pay a woman to bear a child for you.

    - To take control of a child of a player character, you need both the player father's name and child's ID (so you can't just guess child IDs. Only the parents can see a child's ID (so only they can give the ID to another player if they want.

    - A the parents have the option to open up thier child to the general public. (I am GUESSING that this means the child is searchable to anyone and does not need the ID in this case)

Based on this info, I am GUESSING that if a mother and father are both player controlled, both have access to the child's ID and could theoretically fight first come first serve.

Correction to myself, you need the child's ID and parent's name, which could be either the father or mother. Also, obviously women can have children without getting married as well.

Wheres the info from? Something you gleaned from the devs on IRC?

It's true to use a Child Code you need both the alias of the owner, as well as the code. This serves as a second form of authentication, as presumably if you know both, then there's a strong likelihood you're allowed to use the code.

As to who owns the code, that's determined ahead of time via a contract. It's possible for both to receive the code, in which case the first to use it consumes it, or it can be determined that only one gets the code. Once you create a child a message is sent to one or both accounts with the code.

CoE is beyond awesome. Actual lineage implemented into an MMO. I know people have thought of this and even tried to do it but failed. Along with the fact players age, even when offline will help to maintain an honest and accurate flow of story progression.

Getting married and raising a family may not interest everyone, but it's more of a role players dream for an MMO. This is the kind of game design that will keep players interested for more than a year. I speak of role players of course, since I'm sure FPS, fast level, fast action, twitch combat players will not want anything to do with this game.

I suspect having babies is the only way of bringing in new characters (be it players, NPCs) into the world so having children is vital.

Yes, indeed this game is not for everyone that is for sure. There are going to be many things in this game and many people probably will find something to do in this game. But I don't think the developers are waiting to satisfy everyone.

So children will be created through the contract system? no woops babies?

Oh my god, they are really gonna have playable kids? What kind of controls will they have to keep things from turning kiddie porn rpg?

You can play as young as 12 if your a ward of the state. Otherwise you start at 15 for normal characters or 18+ for NTCs (none-traditional characters).
Im guessing our love life wont go into to much detail...

Well, kids appear in-game at 8, but aren't playable till 14-16, they are killable and in some cases it is desirable to kill them (lets say you are a evil character, you can poison or pepper them with arrows in a ambush to kill potential claiments to the throne).

Thats not the only 'controversial' thing in the game either, things like same-sex marriage, only opposite genders can have children (so male-female)

There is no on-screen sex in the game so it won't be 'kiddie porn rpg'.

Offing the yonger characters will mainly happen over inheritance. If you haven't heard yet there is peramadeath and your children will inherit your stuff. If you use the child codes right you can then play your heir and not lose your stuff.

But someone playing your little brother might have a differnety idea...

Heh, that'd be pretty awesome.  Just like the royal-family politics of old civilizations.  That could be quite an interesting layer of gameplay for alot of people.  It would give some legitimate purpose to ganking instead of just pointless bloodlust.

So, I guess the next question is... can you sell your daughter's hand for a dowry? :proud:

Im sure the contract system would allow you to negotiate a fee (dowry) for the marriage to one of your children. If you are a large powerful family you could probably make some quick $ marring off family members to make alliance's.
