Thread needs a poll for: If your favorite MMO was one of your first 3 MMOs you have played. I'd guess 60% or more would agree to that.
That's probably mostly true. I rarely hear anyone rave about how GW2 or TESO are their favorite MMO of all time unless it's their first game. If Planetside 1 would get a graphical facelift and remove BFR's, then I'd go back to playing that game so quick. Too bad it just looks so bad these days.
Age of Wushu tops my list. The number of times my heart was pounding, the number of times I said "HELL YEAH", the number of times I was pissed off are unmatched. So many times I looked at Wushu gamplay systems and thought "This is fricken brilliant". Add in that during that time it was the most immersed I had ever been, plus talking to a community of people from all over the world, Wushu is tops.
Are you still playing this game? I remember you were beating everyone over the head with it when it was being developed and right after it came out.
If you left, then why?
I think he said it went P2W.
Well that's unfortunate.
I wonder just how P2W it is. There's two types really. The first is where the best gear is locked behind a pay wall and can't be obtained any other way. The other is where a player can buy the best gear, but everyone else can still get it by playing/grinding.
I despise the first way, but the second way doesn't bother me at all. I've skipped a lot of bad tanks in World of Tanks by converting XP from good tanks into free XP that I use to skip the sucky tanks. It's not really an advantage or disadvantage as long as the Matchmaker is doing it's job both teams will be relatively even no matter how anyone got into their tanks.
SWG Pre-cu, post JTL... I started MMOs in 2002 with DAOC, moved to SWG in 03. SWG simply had the most dynamic experience for me, while it didn't feature much story, it didn't need it because of the source material, it was quite easy to get into the world without much lore being presented in game. I've yet to see a game that felt as worldly as it or one that offered such a great community experience.

The p2w wasn't felt until you were playing at the very top of the player base, top 3%. It was very real there though. Still it was the best mmorpg experience I've had. I would still recommend it to anyone looking for a pvp focused, non-quest centric sandbox with decent pve and a great crafting system.
There is no best overall for me - the answer changes over the years - like what's the best movie or best song - it changes over time for me.
Asking for a singular answer is like asking who is your favorite child.
I have to agree with DMKano on this one.. Its nearly impossible to pick "the best" MMO I've played..
Still, if I had to say.. I probably had the most combat fun for PvE in Tabula Rasa.. The most exploration fun in Asheron's Call and World of Warcraft.. The most PvP fun in Warhammer Online.. The most character development fun in City of Heroes and DC Universe.. The most questing fun in Star Wars The Old Republic..
Special mention to Earth and Beyond for most fun as a starship..
This is starting to feel like the Oscars award show..

1997 Ultima Online. Favorite was Daoc followed by Warhammer Online. Left both because Mythic is a destroyer of MMO's, eventually led the games somewhere I did not agree with.
DAoC is top of the list for me, when Mordred launched and then after the SI expansion, were the best times of that game. ToA saw a large population dip, but the killing factors I think were New Frontiers, and Catacombs right after. Catacombs brought with it Warlocks which at the time, could solo a non ToA geared group. WoW had also just launched 2 months prior to Catacombs, and DAoC became an afterthought for most.
Which leaves WoW at number 2, and Shadowbane at number 3, for me at least.
Currently all I play is GW2, Trove, and a bit of FFXIV. I have high hopes for Camelot Unchained, and Star Citizen, though. I'm hoping one of those two can replace DAoC for most fun mmo I've played.
It is indeed still running - maintained by a handful of dedicated admins and staff. There has been a rebalancing project recently, which has caused a kind of rift in the community. But I still play every now and again to check things out.
i also agree this thread is basically asking which games do you use as a benchmark for other games. Strictly because they were your first few games. Possibly the game that you found your niche in. Everyone's different here. The majority will have to say wow. The old school player will give a couple games from the 15 mmo's previous to wow. Probably still include wow on some level because it helped shape his/her baseline or bar. The anime art lover will say some game like maplestory and ragnarok. The multitude of games similar in looks and feel to those kawaii games. You have your skyrim, oblivion, morrowind crowd. you have other crowds. whats the point of this thread again?
Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. I hate PVP with a passion but in WAR it was a blast. I had so much fun in PVP that I never touched much of the PVE content. Someone needs to pick up the rights to the game and relaunch it.

3. GW2
Followed closely by AC(my first love) and AO Pre-Shadowlands.
ArcheAge is, what i'd call today's best mmorpg.
Is it still running ?

I think the best time in that game was from Gates of Discord to The Serpent's Spine, and all expansions in between.
Prior to this period, you didn't have really fleshed out raids yet, and too many were still "tank and spank".
After this period, Everquest lost too many good developers, players, and not enough will to make something special.
Son, I am disappoint.
