If smaller games like GW2, SWTOR and EVE Online can keep pumping out expansions with far fewer subscribers than 5.6 million, then I think Blizztard will manage to get a few more WoW expansions out the door.
Apparently I can't explain it well enough for it to make sense, so that's on me.
Blizzard is not done - but they are done making huge games with big releases only every 3-5 years. The Starcraft saga is ending. Legacy of the Void will be it. The RTS genre isn't going anywhere but down, MOBA pretty much took over completely, and the last few survivors will be turn based like Civilization who still have a niche audience.
Heroes of the Storm is their new baby in that play space. Something made much faster by a much smaller team that, like LoL or Dota, is using a proven money-making model, for far less investment from the studio.
Diablo 3 is probably the last in the series. Three successful games, a major expac that sold well, a good console release - it's not going to close or end, but we won't see a Diablo 4. We MIGHT see another expansion with a new class, but I'm pretty skeptical of that. We'll see more 2.3 style patches (upcoming) while the sales numbers are still good.
Legion will be the last major WoW expansion. They may not go F2P until the subs drop REALLY low, but they could and probably will flip the switch to F2P at some point and probably even increase their revenue stream like other MMO games have done.
The team will be much smaller, running the live game and putting out more frequent, smaller updates, but nothing as large as a major expansion again.
Hearthstone will continue to pump out expansions and new content, at breakneck pace, and will be the next WoW in terms of Blizzard's cash cow - it already is.
Overwatch is their new IP - and we'll see how they fair, but it is shaping up nicely.
They aren't giving up revenue streams. They are reorganizing. They may lose X amount from winding WoW down and going F2P, but freeing up those internal resources is going to make them more agile to put more into Overwatch and Heroes and Hearthstone - so their revenue will go UP!
No more "big" games, but more, smaller, tighter, leaner games - that will actually end up having MORE players and making MORE money than their BIG games ever did.
That is the new model.
The writing is very clearly on the wall, if you know what to look for.
I don't see that working though. The problem is there are only so many card games, fps, and MOBAs they can churn out for cheep and get a big return on. If they make a second or third MOBA or card game they're likely only cannibalizing their own customers. Unless they have a vision for a couple new genres that they can create with cheap games... but seriously Blizzard hasn't shown the ability to create that kind of visionary work since the 90s.
I suppose they could go all in for mobile games. Sure the profits are amazing because the costs are so low but it's not like that market isn't saturated with games form companies with far more experience in mobile.

yes !! ..............Yes!!!! they are done for sure .. as there stock rose 12.50 % yesterday and is it a 5 year high where it has just continued to grow consistenetly .. But yes yes .. they are Done ... lmfao .. aint that rich ...
Pretty much.
The denizens of this site are nothing, if not predictably, and fortunately often amusingly, divorced from any remote semblance of reality.
As long as they can make a profit it will keep running and get updates / expansions, granted the Xpacs may reduce in size in the coming future if the subs continue to reduce.
It will become another EQ1 / runescape, run with bare min funding and support but it will be around for awhile yet me thinks.
It won't end on this expansion. The warcraft universe is so much bigger. But if we really kill Sargeras in this one then yeah we could probably say that's the end. But we won't . So many more expansions are on the way. The end will be when we meet the titans and defeat Sargeras , until that stop this nonsense about last expansion.
until that stop this nonsense about last expansion.
I know you want WoW to last a 100 years, but for all that matter they stop production in 2y and just release small content to buy in the Store. Or it might just last another 10y with 500 expansion down the line.
You don't know that as much as OP does if it is the last xpac unless you are a Blizzard Exec.
"going into arguments with idiots is a lost cause, it requires you to stoop down to their level and you can't win"
Hmm they have 5 Mil subs still, still more than any other game ever and still making a profit. I dare you to stand up in front of their share holders and say we are making big profits but we think it's time to stop making our product and shut it down.
Is it me or does this OP sound like a little kid plugging his ears and throwing a temper tantrum. How many times can he "call it now" we get it you are excited that you "think" finally after ten years of QQing over a video game you may have won!
He makes comments (while plugging his ears and stomping on the ground) like come back in a year a prove me wrong...hey little buddy we will be lucky if the xpac is released in a year. Just settle down we all know you are excited cause a video game you don't like and have been QQing over for ten years hit a little hiccup with the last xpac. But your desperation is a little awkward.
That's not how I took it at all. I didn't really take his OP to really even be an attack on WoW or anyone that likes it.
I know it happens so often that it's almost a reflex at this point to assume that a WoW topic on this forum is going to be of the "I hate a popular game so that makes me cool and unique like everyone else" variety...
But I didn't see any of that here.
Sure... the "most of you guys don't get it" stuff is pretty snarky.
I don't always agree with Badspock... if I were to guess, I'd say maybe 60-40...? But I don't recall him having an opinion that seems purely malicious. I mean, even here in this OP he's not labeling WoW as some failure. Every MMO(or software in general), even the best ones, have a sunset, and he thinks he sees WoW's coming.
I can think of alot of things I'd rather be on record for being right about, but I don't see any malice in his OP.
Unless Blizzard is grossly exaggerating their account numbers, there is no way in hell they stop here, way too much money and money is the ONLY reason these businesses are here.
If anything Blizzard is likely eyeing up a time when they get back all those 16+ million and run a f2p cash shop operation.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Originally posted by Markn WOW players are funny . If EQ can keep going for 15 years with 5% of the players WOW has this game is going to last forever.
Every major story arc in the Warcraft/WoW universe is going to come to an end with this expansion.
I'm calling it.
If they do another one, it'll be something random like Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor were. I don't think they'll do that again.
The movie is giving them the PERFECT opportunity to start over.
To build a new game.
To rebuild a new Warcraft universe from the ground up, from the beginning.
In an era of reboots, and reboots of reboots, what does WoW really need?
A reboot.
Ya'll may not believe, and think I'm crazy, but come back next year, and we'll see!
I recall the same Bravado and boasting predictions from the Prophet Badspock , during the SWToR CB , then OB leadin up to launch and into early launch .. Then you disapeared .. SWToR would be the bestest MMO ever , all other MMos being crushed under the driving treads of R2D2, with you light sabre held high you were set to conquer all the MMO world... then the batteries went dead .....................

OMG you are calling it? Wow, how special.

Legion = Letdown
If it is, I do hope they go out with a bang.
Honestly, lore-wise, this should have been the expansion after WotLK. Or at least after Cataclysm. It's sort of been filler for the rest.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

This, right here.
Wishful thinking is running rampant in this thread. Looking forward to it being thrown in your face when proven wrong.
