All the games coming up crowfall, camelot unchained to name a couple just seem meh and everquest next well if that actually gets made i cant see it being any good, Its like they have no idea what players want :S

Nope i really think this is it for now, maybe between 2018-2020 some good mmorpgs will get made using oculus rift or something  which might be pretty cool seems like a long time  to wait:(

I want a mmo to keep me interested like wow did back in vannila through to tbc , but that doesnt seem like its possible anymore.

Total opposite for me I can see a ton on mmos in development that are moving away from the boring themepark clone crap we have seen over the last 10 years. WOW style games bore the hell out of me..

A lot are indie games but we are still going to get some good ones :)

I agree with the OP, nothing has really gotten me overly excited lately. It is all the same boring level grinders. I am excited for Tree of Savior, only because of fond memories of Ragnarok Online Alpha/beta days. (Never really played release though lol). I also am looking  forward to EQNext, but that is it :(

I am playing the new EQ2 progression server, and am actually enjoying starting at level 1 again without mercs. I do miss the grouping days and this is scratching my itch.

I agree with the OP.  I'm a dinosaur when it comes to gaming.  Unfortunately for me I'm not the target audience for most mmo's made today.  There is a new generation of gamer today and that is what the publishers of games are going to cater to.  They are in it to make money and that is where it is.   10 yrs from now when today's gamer is in the same position we are in right now, they will probably reminiscing about how gaming was back in their day and how their is nothing good for them to play.

I'm currently subbed to FFXIV and enjoying it, even when I don't really like eastern made games.  Other than that, I have moved to SP games for PC.  I don't own a console and never will.   My youngest child is 12 and is a gamer.  She plays FFXIV with me and also plays SWTOR and LOTRO in spurts.  She hates the new games coming out and feels that they are nothing but hollow games designed to burn through the content and your wallet.

I still watch and hope for a game that will captivate me again, but I'm also a realist and understand that it's most likely never going to happen.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

I will admit the repopulation look nice, but for some reason I feel like I am unknowing about the mmo.  I would like to see a bit of gameplay of like a tutorial video that shows you the basics.

Well, I havent played any MMO since over a year now.

Let's see... I've enjoyed one... two... three... in the last year, plus a couple others that drop the "RPG" to be known as MMOs.

It seems to be that just the opposite of the OP is true; there is more selection and fewer barriers to entry in the genre than at any point in history.  MMORPGs are no longer 'new': they are 'established'.  Consequently, it's not surprising that some lighthouse customers may feel burned out by now.  That doesn't mean the genre is dying.  On the contrary, from my perspective MMORPGs are currently undergoing a renaissance; not just new titles but older, established games that are continually improving and reinventing themselves.

I felt the same way as the OP... Until I found out about Tree of Savior. For a Ragnarok Online veteran like myself, I haven't been so excited for an MMO like this in a long time. With the plethora of WoW clones and mediocre action-based combat MMOs that have been coming out in recent years, we needed a game like this.

Last week I tried Skyforge... it didn't last more than a day installed on my PC. I was anticipating Blade and Soul and Black Desert, but they just take too long for international release and that coupled with the fact that the more you watch and learn about the game the more it feels they'll be more of the same. I hope I am wrong.

The only thing that would make me hyped all over again (aside from ToS), would be if Blizzard announced a new MMO to replace WoW (now that'd be a epic day in gaming history!) simply because I know they make quality stuff, something that's rare nowadays.

Other than that, there's not much else to look forward to. Never been a fan of Everquest. Sure, there are some games coming, but none that you can truly say it looks of top quality like WoW, FF14, Eve. To me, the vast majority of MMOs out there right now are not very good to put it kindly. Of course everyone has their opinion and this is just mine. Maybe I am too demanding of the games I play.

I am thankful a group of veteran developers decided to make a spiritual successor to RO, because Tree of Savior will literally be just that, my "savior" in these dark times for the MMO industry.

^^ just need to look at the current AAA MMO that are not on a holding pattern:

    TSW,FF14,EVE,ESO,WILDSTAR,GW2,ARCHAGE

That's a serious amount of high quality diverse mmorpg, all with different strategies and gaming styles. If you can't find anything in that lot then I don't think you ever will.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

I respectfully disagree, simply because this is too limiting a viewpoint; there are plenty of other good games out there that are "not on a holding pattern": no need to limit the search to seven.  For example, none of the three MMORPGs I've enjoyed in the last year are on your list: possibly someone else may find something unique about them in a similar vein as me?

I said AAA as in budget.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

I Do agree there are lots of other games out there ofc, tons.

See that's what I am worried about, none of the game you listed grab my interest anymore. I really did try hard to like GW2, but the way the game is set up with its individual PvE and PvP world put me off. It felt too instanced at some point (something I dislike). I do think FF14 and Eve and pretty good games and stand out above the rest currently.

But it's time for something new as well. The rest simply don't appeal to me for one strong reason or the other like unappealing art style (WildStar), gameplay style (TSW), or have a "mediocre" feeling all over it (ESO).

I mean, to me they're all in the "hit or miss" category. I don't know, maybe its just as I said and I am extremely (unfairly) picky and I expect too much polish in a game.

  • PhaserlightPhaserlight Member EpicPosts: 3,071
I wasn't contending the assertion that those seven games comprise all triple-A MMORPGs that are not in a holding pattern, but rather that one having played those seven games and still not being satisfied wouldn't find what s/he is looking for (in the MMORPG space) by continuing the search.

I'm someone that enjoys games, not an industry expert.

The market has gone from one extreme to the other. MMORPGs before WoW were extreme hardcore grindfests. IF you were a casual player you didn't play MMORPGs. Then WoW made the game much much friendlier to casuals but even its original version had a very hardcore raiding system in place. Over the years after WoW we moved to the other extreme of very casual MMORPGs.

To be honest I would take current MMORPGs over hardcore grindfests of the old any time.

EVE is not even a fun sandbox, it's ...excel spreadsheet joke incoming.....not fun.

I have to disagree with the OP.. there are two MMORPGs on the horizon to watch out for.

The first is Chronicles of Elyria with its amazingly thought out permadeath system. More information should be coming in the future weeks and months.. but the devil is in the presentation.. can they pull it off?

    http://chroniclesofelyria.com/

The second is Citadel of Sorcery.. one that I personally am a founder of and support wholeheartedly. This game has been in development for several years and they have just updated almost all the work they have done to DX12. Prior to that it was already a beautiful 900 million Kilometer planet.. now its even more so.

    http://www.citadelofsorcery.com/

Either way these two are probably the most promising MMORPGs for the near future. Pay attention to them, support them if you choose. They are both trying things that arent done in modern MMORPGs .

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT

Playing: The Secret World until Citadel of Sorcery goes into Alpha testing.

Tired of: Linear quest games, dailies, and dumbed down games

    Anticipating:Citadel of Sorcery

While these games may be interesting (I particularly like CoS) neither is likely to release in "the foreseable future"

CoS has been in development for 8 years so far and is making very slow progress.

CoE seems to have been in development for less than a year.

Both are well beyond the horizon.

Ragnarok was the most boring asian grinder ever, whytf would we want a successor?

Blade and Soul? Puuuuulease. It's just another asian button spammer with too few races, yet again. 1 month wonder anyone?

Pantheon, EQNext, Project Gorgon and Star Citizen could all be vaporware.

Anyone that's played Camelot Unchained knows it is nowhere near as good as DAoC.

Skyforge is just a worse Tera

Looks like a pretty bleak future to me.

I am not sure how anyone has "played" C.U. yet and been able to make an accurate decision, especially since its in early alpha with barely any of the main systems implemented. This statement just seems ill informed.

I personally have not been excited for a MMO in a very long time, the development of C.U. has made me anticipate this game like no other. CSE is a very open Dev. and it is rather refreshing how they have gone about making the game.

I think there actually are games in the making that have new and fun ideas.

Shards for example let you customize and run your own server, Pantheon seems to take a new path for PvE games branching out from EQ but going in a different direction that MMOs went after that. Crowfall is a PvP game fthat are trying out many new mechanics that we never seen in MMOs before.

Those 3 games all have experienced devs that actually done a lot for the genre in the past and while they don't have the budget of Blizzard or Bioware they certainly have many new and cool ideas.

I still hope that Undead labs will release some info that they are still working on Class 4, that game have the lead designer of WC3 and GW (GW2 the first 3 years as well) together with good funding from Microsoft but they have been silent about it for far too long for me to be sure it havn't been canned or put on hold.

EQ Next and the Lineage game in production also have some potential.

The MMOs in development have less funding now then anytime after Wows release, that is true but they also have far more new ideas then we seen since that time so the glass isn't empty even if it just is half full.

Still, if a single of those games actually becomes a huge hit it will change everything just as Wow did once. And if not, at least will we get a few different games and something should be worth playing.

The only big upcoming releases are GW2's HoT and WS's F2P relaunch.  There was also Skyforge too.  Black Desert might also launch this year.  There was also Trove, but yeah, i haven't been too thrilled this year for MMOs.

It seems like this year had more expansions and content updates, instead of actual new MMOs, but i could be wrong.

Let's get this straight the genre of MMORPG's is not dead.  The genre is just not what you and many others want it to be.  Which honestly the only thing alot of you guys seem to want is like EQ 1 HD edition, or a remake of whatever 15-20 year old game that you played when you first learned what an MMORPG is.  I get it we all have our favorite games and nostalgia is really strong."

This is a fallacy strawman arguement casuals use to justify why true mmo players are upset. We want the values and opened sandbox, thriving worlds of the past. but with updates. graphically, combat wise and complexity wise.  A game where your actions hold weight; through gear loss, xp loss, territory loss. Where there are multitudes of things to do in game which all have meaning and are rewarding. We want dedication to the game, knowledge, and player skill to be the biggest influence, not a cashshop. However I think alot of us don't want the massive grinds of old games either(Linage/Eq1), but still enough to not be finished in a month like modern games.

Personally I'd like to see a darkfall online(1st version) mmo, but with more sandbox, better graphics and a better development team.

    -------------------------

Right now its the casual player's paradise, because they can buy I win or pay to advance BS via cashshops and then after that month they are up to the next hyped mmo which are only shells of games because they are catered to those that like pretty graphics, simple features and easy gameplay.

That or we get WoW style mmo's where you have to gear grind over and over doing the same instances.

Long dead is a mmo catered to RPG crowd. We have to try and put our faith in Indie developers or kickstarters(which could delivier no game at all) and usually they are just terrible and poorly managed. Some gems are still in the rough but are neglected(DFO, APB, DCUO) and dumb down and limit their game ever further via F2P.

Its asinine that those players that don't want to play mmo's are catered to the most thus we are in the scenario present for the last 7-8 years.

Ofc you'll have the naysayers that are finding some kind of enjoyment out of the crop out there or trying to persuade others to join "their" game because they dropped too much money to back out of. Mmo's are all about money these days and making a good game first and foremost is pushed to the wayside because casuals will eat up anything new that comes out and sometimes convince Veterans the hype is correct and "that" game will be diferent. Happened to me a few times.

Here is few games that I am eagerly awaiting that I think are well worth buying into.

    Star Citizen https://robertsspaceindustries.com/

    Camelot Unchained !!! http://camelotunchained.com/v2/

    The Repopulation https://www.therepopulation.com/

Warhammer 40K: Eternal Crusade (pseudo mmo) https://www.eternalcrusade.com/

For what it's worth in the mean time (aside from my recently discovered addition to EvE Online) I found Skyforge http://sf.my.com/us to be surprisingly well done and a gorgeous game.

If two years is too much for you locusts, how about not preordering, not playing the beta and waiting for the reviews. Just that will give you a better experience.

What are playing Scot this game you mention here ?

I was also enjoying the part about voting with your wallets when the poster saying it has made a habit of not spending anything on the games he plays. Well vote with your wallet indeed !

If you want to make an impact you have to play and give feedback on the games and so many games are F2P now that your mere presence is all they need as others are more than willing to fund your presence. However that quote from The Wire, Cedric's wife says "you cannot lose if you do not play" so decide if you want to make a difference by playing and contributing to this genre or leave it until it becomes what you want.

Its not definite yet, but I might be giving FFIV a go. Regardless of the game, make sure it is or once was P2P or B2P. Cash shops are a bane on MMOs we have had to accept, but if a game starts F2P the lack of quality will show. Your money does count, even in the two F2P games I have played, I bought some storage or fluff just to show my appreciation of keeping me entertained. But its clear to me now that if a game does not at least start as P2P/B2P it will not sustain my interest.
