[Column] World of Warcraft: What We'd Like to See (and Not See) in the Next Expansion

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Many WoW players are pinning their hopes on the Eye of Azshara, a name that Blizzard trademarked late last year (and the subject of our WoW column earlier this week). Rather than focus on what we’d like to see lore-wise, let’s take a few minutes to look at the things we’d like to see (and NOT see) from a feature standpoint in this next as-yet-unnamed expansion.

Read more of Suzie Ford's & Catherine Daro's World of Warcraft - What We'd Like to See (and Not See) in the Next Expansion.

    More class diversification

Yes, this please :) I think one of the worst things Ghostcrawler was responsible for was the "sameification" of classes. Warlock and hunter is a good example. The similar direct heals across priest, druid and shammy is another.

Even Ghostcrawler recognises now that this went too far. Now that he's not there, they should surely be able to row back from this a bit. It makes life boring.

It will probably never happen, but I've always wanted to play as a Murloc.  They're my favorite race.  I would race change every single character I could to play as a Murloc :D

All I have to say is 20-40 min of play time. Make WoW style content thats easy and fast to get into and can be done in 20-40 min of game play and make you feel like you have progressed. I get play time thats sometimes 1-4hrs most days its under an hour. Add that and I would come back.

Excellent Article. I really agree with your points on crafting, garrisons and endgame content. Let me add there should have never been a WoW token.

They should have another cataclysm and return to the playstyle ways of Vanilla/BC   :)

My dream of course, but its a successful game and they have a playerbase that likes a more casual playstyle now so it would never happen.

I think that is WoW now, isn't it? Even raids are split into nice, manageable 1-hour chunks (LFR).

If I could have one thing, I'd want my skill tree back. Don't worry about balancing, necessarily, just try not to make anyone godly.

I suspect what Blizzard would like - planned even - to roll out was "WoD-lite":
    • some story stuff etc. in the xpac itself;
    • dropbox and hangouts in 7.1 say
And forget the 7.2 content patch. After all the aim - we are led to believe - is yearly expansions, so no room for those pesky patches!

Given how "underwhelmed" many - not all but I would suggest the majority - of people have been with WoD; how let down they feel will this even be an option?

Even if they wanted to do otherwise however is Blizzard in a situation to do so?

Unusually WoD had a "release date" announced by Activision. OK it was only "by the end of 2014" but it wasn't the usual "ready when its ready" date. And - as night follows day - WoD had - and still has - bugs.

So on the one hand we have comments like: the next xpac had better have new class / new race / many more dungeons / raids / bosses etc. and on the other I suspect we have the whip being cracked: the next expansion will be out by <<insert date here>>.

At this point in time I am not sure Blizzard can deliver "salvation" and a WoD-lite simply isn't going to go down well at all.

What would get me back?  Something akin to the old talent system.  Having every class essentially now just... pick a role, without any real personalized character development, turned me off big time.  Haven't been back.

If that were to happen?  I'd subscribe again.

Oh... and more race-class combinations.  That's more a wishlist item though :P

  • drakolasdrakolas Member UncommonPosts: 45
My biggest issue with WoD was how dead the world seemed. There was very little to do in the world other than garrison quests or leveling quests. There were practically no places to farm and world PvP was completely dead. Instead of revitalizing world PvP they killed it off entirely.

They need the old talent system in place with hundred(s) of points to spend in 3 specialization specific trees + a general class tree.

Overhaul the secondary stats (again) to create more opportunity for diversification.

Bring back reforging and lots of gemming.

    Bring back more enchantment slots.

    Bring back raid attunements.

Give us class specific quest lines.

Definitely remove garrisons/shipyards and overhaul crafting (again) to to build customized gear, focusing on open world collection and exploration not raid-locked materials.

Give us a single quest arc (story) per zone, no new zones, update entirety of Kalimdor/Eastern Kingdoms to reflect post Cata/MoP/WoD world.

    Public events.

    Lower quest XP and rewards.

Improved vendor bought items & crafted gear.

    Increase kill XP dramatically.

Open world "dungeons" with solo/group areas.

New 1-100 zone/quest progression through remade Azeroth.

    No level cap increase.

New AA system for max level characters, including ability morphing.

Level 100 upscaled versions of current Azeroth zones, filled with public events, a single, well told quest chain.

    More new & remade dungeons.

    Apprenticing system.

Old Northrend, Azeroth, Pandaria, Outland, Draenor accessible via Caverns of Time.

    New class & new races.

Lower end gems, enchantments seeded on AH to fight inflation.

    NO FLYING.

Diversify abilities, core class skills vs. specialization skills & racial skills.

Much fewer total skill count, yet far more diverse per class/specialization, with previously mentioned skill morph system tied into max level AA progression.

New combat system - more active/reactive, less in combat healing, more active dodging/interrupting required, new defensive skills and counter system for all classes, greatly reduced player & NPC/mob health pools, increased damage (less hit-trading, more avoid/counter or get wrecked.)

I could go on and on...

there is no point casual player play game after hit max lvl, pvp is what it is, raiding require perfect team work and time. sure u can play as casual but u never get best gear. game is way too much raid focused, and its kinda outdated.
  • EcocesEcoces Member UncommonPosts: 879

i would love to see more "public events" Similar to Rifts in well rift and those that were found in Warhammer online.

New classES aka more than one - Pistoleer (dual wielding pistols) Machinist (uses turrets and other contraptions as well as rifles/crossbows) and the rumored bow/crossbow/rifle wielding magic user.

agree with the diversification of classes

  • onelesslightonelesslight Member UncommonPosts: 161

+1 to the public events idea - maybe add in self-mentor/scaling ala RIFT and some currency for fun items to give max-level players a reason to adventure in the rest of Azeroth

+1 also to Timewalking dungeons; as a player who has never stuck with WoW for long I've missed out on a lot of the old content, but would love to do it when it's still even a little bit challenging and rewarding. It would be great even at max level to be able to choose from so many dungeons rather than just the current expansion set to get currencies/gear/rep from

wanna change wow? wanna make it worth playing again..for awhile..

add a  3rd faction..3rd faction doesnt even need a huge area for its self they could roll it out like how eq2 did the errant faction..like how you can be horde do hard pvp quest line to become ally or stay errant.. 2 new races and  garrison  vs garrison pvp also throw in a new  pvp island..im not talking about some lil random bg..a big battle field like eso

then and only then will wow suck in all the people that left..the game looks and plays like a f2p game looks old and needs a overhaul or even a new game totally

You've thought this out quite well, however toss in updated graphic engine and it is probably easier to create a whole new game, rather than roll back on the old one.

if the devs I spoke to before were legit, there is a new class and no level increase

why blame ghostcrawler when it was the players who started to cry as soon some class had something they had not?

they cried because shamies were offensive and palas were def, so both have been made available for each side.

they cried because priests did no dmg, and rogues did, so both have been equalized up to statements like "healers are not supposed to die in a 1:1"

don't blame the devs, blame the players.

fwiw the class they explained to me was a combo of an Engineer from GW2 mixed with a Sabotuer from Rift

bombs, turrets, mail wearing, aoe healer/aoe dps, moderate single target, potentially support class also

would love for them to finally add true support classes like Bard, Archon too

got to say as usually I do not agree with much this site says about WoW

I would like to see Demonology warlocks to be able to trap/contain (until they die/you release them) every type of demon in the game. They are demonologists for a reason and you judging by the number of skills and specs in the game, we are not amateur warlocks lore-wise.

And i would like Elemental Shamans to have more control over the elements.... you know, pulling stone pillars/hands from the ground and all that good stuff than only Thrall can do. That would be a sweet epic quest for Shamans, becoming Thrall´s apprentice and learning his most powerful shamanic skills (similar to the green fire for warlock acquisition)

And of course, more story content. Also, lets see more open world sandboxy elements too. Knowing how Blizzard takes ideas from other games and make them superior, they can take some ideas from ArcheAge and make them better, like the trading routes, etc, directly from out garrison and our shipyard! Fascinating.

EDIT: Bring back proper class management. I enjoyed Hunters more when.... you know, i ran out of arrows and had to fight with daggers until i found/bought/crafted more arrows.

I come back to play and I get bored after a few weeks. I think I keep wanting to recapture what it was like in Vanilla when the world was smaller, harder, extremely satisfying and crowded with players. I miss it and it has gone for good.

Level 100 is a nice round number guys, so maybe it's time for WoW 2? Let me carry my maxed toons over as new level ones, keeping their names, titles and achievements but this time keep the world tight, expand it laterally, listen to us and give us rewarding experiences that keep us there and keep us together. WoW 1 is empty and soul-less. I go back to Azeroth and my toons feel homeless.
