Where is the "fun" in MMOs? Only WoW that I can tell has "fun"

TheScavengerTheScavenger EpicPosts: 3,321Member

Every time I play an MMO, there isn't any "fun"

I tried ESO, but there is no "fun"

Tried FFXIV, and it has amazing crafting, but I didn't see much "fun"

Tried older MMOs, like EQ2, Vanguard (that was the least "fun"), Ryzom, LOTRO

GW2 comes closest to "fun", that comes in 2nd for "fun" category

Its probably why WoW was such a success, or at least a big reason

In WoW. I can craft so many potions, and most MMOs don't even have alchemy available (my favorite profession). And the potions do all kinds of fun things...morph into dragons...breath underwater (still can't believe MMOs haven't copied underwater gameplay of WoW lol)...run faster...all kinds of things

Or tailoring, I can get a magic carpet and I also get other fun stuff I can craft

Or engineering. I mean that speaks for itself, the most fun profession in the game...no other MMO has such a fun crafting profession as engineering that I've personally played

Or cooking in the game. Now that is tons of fun too, so many different foods you can make. Most MMOs ignore cooking (not all), but those that do...kudos to them.

And all the cosmetic pets you can get in WoW, all the mounts you can get

Then there are the holiday events that are just lots of "fun". A lot of MMOs do holiday events though, GW2 and LOTRO (back when I played) probably being my favorite non-WoW holiday events.

Is this may be why a lot of MMOs don't see the success WoW has/had? WoW just has so much "fun" things to do, and the crafting system is amazingly fun. It isn't complex, but you have so much fun stuff. Bombs, robot chickens, random potions, mounts...all kinds of things.

Any MMOs I may have missed that have "fun" like WoW? Closest I've come to is GW2, that is pretty close compared to other MMOs.

We seen other games from Wows time with similar crafting options, EQ2 released before with even more crafting options. The problem it had was not that it wasn't fun but just that it was a buggy mess who released 6 weeks before Wow who was in way better shape at launch.

As for underwater combat I feel that GW2 does this way better.

Wows fun factors is surely part of it's success but I feel other games have been as fun. I think adding Blizzards name and an actually good engine is needed to explain the success, as well as the timing, the earlier giant EQ was fading at the time so people were looking for something new.

Still, I think Wow have lost a lot of it's fun factor during the years, now it is basically a long tutorial for the raids with some side things like garrisons.

I been with MMOs from the beginning, I seen and played many fun games but in the end have I always thought that it is more important who you play with then what you actually play. If MMOs feel more boring lately I think that a large part of that is because nowadays you play far less with other people than you did in EQ or vanilla Wow.

That might be just me getting old, but if I want to play alone there are far better game suited for that than MMOs, games where the entire world changes depending on my actions and I can set the difficulty to be just perfect. Every single great MMO moment I ever had had been playing together or against other players.

Fun is very important in MMOs, as is a good world, a solid engine, good art and the other players around us.

Wait, you're citing WoW's awful crafting system as an example of something "fun"?  Gather a bunch of materials, go to a crafting station, start crafting, go AFK, and come back in five minutes with a higher crafting level and a bunch of junk to vendor is your idea of "fun"?  Do that enough times and you can eventually build useless stuff that would have been easier and cheaper to buy off the auction house.  WoW's crafting is scarcely more than something stupid to grind levels in.

What is fun really depends on who you are, but I have to agree that coompared to SWGs or Vanguards crafting it is pretty aweful, at least to me.

Then again, I know plenty of people who loved EQ2s crafting even more and there you started the first few hours with crafting tin weapons that no sane noob would even consider, I swear that the vendor sniffed at me when I trashed her a 100 tin greatswords...

Crafting should be about experiementing, designing cool looking stuff and finding weird rare mats you need to figure out ways to use, not about spending loads of cash and time before you can do something even remotely useful. Well, that is my opinion at least.

The crafting mechanics is pretty basic in WoW. But the stuff you MAKE is a lot more fun than what I saw in say Vanguard. Vanguard was the most dull crafting I've ever done. Sure it was advanced and complicated, but I didn't craft anything fun. The only thing I sorta liked was Jewelcrafting in that MMO...but even that, I crafted the most mundane, boring stuff I can imagine lol.

In WoW, like I said, crafting system is basic...but you make a ton of fun stuff. As I said if you saw my post, in alchemy I can get a potion to turn into a dragon. Or in tailoring, make a magic carpet and I can make other tailoring stuff that is just for fun. Or engineering I make bombs, robot chickens and a whole bunch of other fun items to use.

Even though WoW crafting mechanic is pretty mundane (collect resource, click button)...it was pretty much same as say, Vanguard...collect resource...click more buttons lol. Just in WoW, you just click one button.

But it isn't the mechanics I'm talking about. Vanguard had better mechanics, but none of the items I crafted were fun at all...I hated crafting in vanguard even though the system was better. There wasn't any fun crafting profession or items to make at all lol. It was the worst crafting system to me of any MMO, it was so mundane and boring even though it was more indepth than WoW. I

ts why I stopped playing Vanguard, back before it got canceled. The crafting was so boring compared to WoW crafting. No alchemy at all, no cooking, no bomb making...nothing fun at all lol.

Though as mentioned, and I forgot about it. GW2 DOES have a vastly better underwater system than WoW. Its almost an entirely new combat system underwater. WoW underwater system is same as land lol.

All of those games have cosmetic crafting with EQ2 and Rift devoting entire crafting trades to cosmetics. Every single game I mentioned has a more involved twist to crafting than WoW does and some of those games actually have useful crafting.

They all have cosmetic collections with LotRO, GW2, EQ2, and Rift excelling in that. LotRO has cosmetic pets and different pet skins for the pet classes as does EQ2, GW2, and Rift.

The lesson to be learned from WoW isn't great game design. The lesson learned from WoW is that if you can skyrocket to mass popularity that inertia will carry you through many years of mediocre game play. People stay where they are. The cost involved in moving around is just too high for many.

Yeah, GW2 has a lot of fun crafting professions. Never played Wildstar, and don't remember how Rift was. I didn't really ever get too into Rift.

EQ2 does have both FUN crafting, but a good crafting system too at the same time. I think WoW and GW2 win out a bit though (at least for me they do).

However, EQ2 housing system is bar none the best as far as themepark MMOs go. I think only Ultima Online has a better housing system.

GW2 has a lot of other fun crafting...its a very close 2nd to me as far as crafting goes compared to WoW. Though like I said, it vastly wins out in the underwater gameplay. It also has a lot of fun stuff to do, like jumping puzzles and a lot of other fun activites. Plus I think GW2 holiday events are at the very least, on par with WoW.

Fine line between fun and corny.

Fun for me is big boobie characters killing stuff...

If fun for you is party hats, and goblins on choppers, WoW is the game for you.

    It always was sorta corny.
