World of Warcraft: Never Underestimate the Sheer Size of Azeroth

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Wily Kotaku readers have pointed out a new World of Warcraft fan video by a player named BigCliffy. BigCliffy has made a hyperlapse video showing the enormity of Azeroth by traveling from one end of Kalimdor to the other, Eastern Kingdoms from end to end, and Pandaria from side to side. Of course a couple disconnected areas are missing, but if there's any doubt about the amount of things to see and do in WoW, this should relieve that. Check it out!

(Ed. note: Be sure to watch it in 1080p for the best view)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The game isn't small by any means, they made it feel small with flying mounts, fast flight paths, not making you explore for flight paths and many ways to teleport around the world. The game felt very massive during vanilla cause most people all they had were 60% speed ground mounts.

Not small, but 95% game zones are pointless in end game. only achie collectors check all zones.

Very true. It's a beautiful, expansive world but Blizz themselves neuter it by concentrating everything into end game with a few daily areas. I wish they would develop open-world content and perhaps a form of self-mentoring/scaling (think Rifts, Invasions, FATEs, etc.) as alternate means of progression (perhaps alternate tokens for cosmetic items, yet more achieves, alternate ways to get lower end gear, etc.).

it is a good sized game but as the others have said, once you out lvled the zone your really not going back to it...if only they had a system like Guild wars 2 where you lvl to your zone....that's one thing i can say guild wars 2 did right.

Ahh the memories.  I still play WoW, simply because there's not a better MMO.  There are others I play as well that come close.  WoW just has everything I want in an MMO, and it's very smooth and polished.

Such big zones, and zero other players... damn garrisons! I want THAT game back :(

So many good memories from all those zones. Heh I've seen better graphics but nothing comes close to how immersed I was there.

    World of Warcraft.

The use of old zones post Cataclysm:

-you level through it once, then never visit again.

-world PVP: doesn't exist anymore since Vanilla-TBC

-dungeons? Nah, you can insta port to it through the dungeon seeker.

-Raids? Nah, you can insta port to it through the dungeon seeker.

-Endgame? Nope, that is found elsewhere by sitting in a garrison waiting for a portal to a dungeon-raid pop up.

Read where I stated that you would visit them once when leveling?

NOPE! You got alternatives to visiting the old zones!

-you can just do dungeons and level up that way...through the dungeon seeker.

-Oh yeah: just do pvp till you are lvl 100.

Remember where I posted the alternatives to visiting the old zones above?

NOPE! You can just buy a lvl 90 and bypass 95% of the content that way!

well that goes for 99% of all MMO´s and pretty much all RPG´s. Heck it is not uncommon in other games either.

This have been a good conversation

I've made it a point to not use my garrison, it just doesn't offer anything I have to have or that I cant get elsewhere by interacting with other players.  I still use the AH in SW and vendors in open zones.  I refuse to sit in my garrison waiting for things to happen.

If Blizzard ever wakes up and starts putting effort into making the rest of Azeroth relevant again, they'll start to see their subscription numbers rise.  The focus on the new expansion zone to the exclusion of the rest of the world will continue to produce a temporary gain followed by a similar (and over time, greater) loss in subs, continuing the downward trend.

Hint: create a post-100 Azeroth map and questlines to start.

Missed some maps.... but a fun ride. Wish more games would come out with that size and scale. Love getting lost in a true game world.

Lots and lots of empty space...

It's not empty, it's just not relevant.  I know GW2 has auto leveling but I prefer the system in Rift because you have control on what you set for yourself.  If the content is too easy when at equal level of the zone, you can drop five levels down so that early content isn't too easy.
