Should I buy Witcher 3? Or is it too violent?

ElikalElikal Member UncommonPosts: 7,912

Ok I have to admit, I am alas quite squemish when it comes to gross violence. Game of Thrones for instance is just too graphic for me. But then I hear so great stories how great Witcher 3 is.

So, what is your opinion, should I buy Witcher 3 or rather not?

Its been around far longer than GOT so blaming that for this is laughable. GOT is frankly tame. Ever hear of slasher films of the 80's? Freddy Jason Michael etc. And in the case of the witcher its not over the top violence, its not, its on point with what is happening. When you're sword fighting it would be unrealistic and laughable to me if there was no blood or dismemberment. Think all the sword fight wars hundreds and thousands of years ago ended with no blood or death or loss of limb? It was fairly prevalent. So I come down on the side of realistic as opposed to cartoon violence no blood violence. Because frankly if I'm hacking a guy with a sword or axe, or shooting them with a gun, if there is no blood or violence it looks like a corny cartoon to me. By the same token if I am playing a tom and jerry or looney toons style cartoon I'd never expect to see anything but over the top laughable violence. If a drop of blood was ever spilled in that type of game it would be wrong. Sorry to say man, either play cartoony games, or get over your problems with "fake" violence, because people who feel like you are obvously in the vast minority and few if any games will meet your needs if you want a serious dark story.

Thanks, but that wasn't particularly what I mean, my bad.

Strangely, combat doesn't really affect me. There flies a head, there stabs a sword; it goes all fast.

No, I mean detailled and "cinematic" scenes. Like, the death ob Oberyn - god I had that picute of his death in my mind for weeks! Or cut off fingers or penises, people being skinned or otherwise slowly and visible tortured. Like the scene in GTA where you had to waterboard someone.

    Not combat, this other torture.

You'll be fine.  Witcher 3 is a great game with a lot going for it, especially in the narrative department.  It's made me look at a lot of other open world games in a different light, that is for sure.

I haven't come across anything terrible in Witcher 3 so far. The violence in game fits the world the game takes place in. I'd say GoT has more graphic violence than W3 by a long shot.

I suppose it's important to define such things as "violence" usually means "violence".

In any case I haven't come across anything like that so have at it.

I absolutely love violence in my games (Mortal Kombat, Blood, Shadow Warrior (2013), Splatterhouse (old and remake), Manhunt 1 & 2, Sniper Elite 2-3, Killing Floor 1 & 2, etc.). The gorier, the better. Though some of the executions in Manhunt definitely made me squirm a bit.

That being said, Oberyn's death is without a doubt one of the most disturbing fictional demises I've ever seen, and I say this also as someone who has seen every Hellraiser flick. Seriously, I couldn't get that image out of my head for weeks. Nor the screaming. They really went out of their way to make it look brutal and realistic. Nothing wrong with being bothered by that; in fact I'd say there may be something wrong with you if you weren't bothered by it.

The only death I've seen which tops that is the real-life suicide of Budd Dwyer on national TV. Dear God that kept me up a few nights.

Anyway, you'll probably be fine. There are some violent scenes, but as you said they're over in a half second. A flash of steel, a scream, and a splash of blood. No prolonged torture or anything yet... though I am only about three hours in. What can I say, FFXIV, Warframe, and Dragonball Xenoverse have kept me busy.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

There is one torture scene i've come across, although you don't get to see much of it, mainly hear it.

There are a couple of fairly extreme scenes, but given what you said above I think you will be fine. Certainly I haven't come across a scene where you see people getting slowly tortured. It has some extreme violence, but I never got the feeling that it was violent or gory just for the sake of it.

based on your comments i think i understand what you mean so i am gonna say you will be fine with Witcher 3 and Witcher 1. but with Witcher 2 you might find one part disgusting (eye related incident although it is not shown in details that much. there is at least one eye related incident in Witcher 3 as well but you won't see the face as far as i remember and there is a possible torture scene that doesn't show anything)

The Witcher 3 is must have it's game FANTASY and the gore you don't want is very limited you can easly SKIP IT so you won't see any.

From all the years you come here and know little what you like i say buy it you won't regret it.

The Witcher 3 is in many ways better then Skyrim which only shines because of mods.
