It's kinda sad honestly, they tried something different and they got railed pretty hard for it.
I played it during a free access beta and although I kinda liked it, the art style was a huge turn-off to me. Loony toons art styling + pandering to feminist activists = no thanks.
Except they *didn't* try something different. They added telegraphs to WoW and left basically everything else the same.
People stopped playing because they realized that no matter how much it might *look* like something new, it isn't. It's still travel-to-quest-hub, pick up eight go-kill-ten type quests, push keys 1-4 on your keyboard to kill, come back, claim rewards, proceed to next quest hub.
The day MMO makers realize that they can't just repackage WoW and achieve success will be a glorious new era for the industry.
EDIT: Also, pandering to feminist activists? The hell are you talking about?

The Aurin Queen and her female consort might be the reference perhaps. The Aurins are also matriarchal.

I would have never even thought of that. All the hours I was just playing the game and having fun. How dumb of me.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
I knew it was bad when they started to try and resell the box to their players to get digital items in game. To much like a cash grab to fill a huge need to keep their doors open. I sure hope they can pull this off, they tried to be different.
I downloaded it few days ago. They improved game but still isn't good for subbing. If I only could see faces of those that told the game will never go F2P and that they will leave if it does. Hurry up guys, go! Make room for others!

UPDATE: It seems that a Reddit Mod-verified Carbine Employee has taken to the Subreddit for WildStar to back up the SteamDB info we found earlier. Calling himself "God_of_EDM", he posted the following in a thread on the subreddit:

God_of_EDM goes on with more insight at the link. Let's hope he keeps his job, because this kind of transparency is welcome.
Mod-verified carbine employees will have a CRB_name nick, and something that showed they are actually employees, just like you have the title "managing editor" here.
God_of_edm got banned on reddit within a few hours of posting that thread, so all of it was BS.

look up another F2P MMO on steam and see what they have for those parameters.

That was quite the stretch wasn't it. Last I heard, feminists were complaining that the female Cassians' boobs were impossibly large, and now the game is pandering to them because of the Aurin quests? Gotta love the professionally pissed off.

It sounds like the WildStar studio is in dire straits. I hope the boat can keep afloat until August. The Freemium business model should have already been in the works for weeks if not months. I wish the game much success, although I will not be playing due to the over-the-top cartoony graphics that assault my eyes.

I'm going to laugh so hard at the people who said this when the game goes F2P. He posted on a non authorized account and inside information. Of course he's going to get the banhammer. That doesn't mean it's not true.
Some ESO fanboys said the same thing, and the TOR fanboys before them, and so on. I could be wrong though. NC might just shut it down on a whim. That's their other alternative.
Sticking your head in the sand is so much easier, though.

It doesn't take a genius to say that wildstar will drop P2P, but that's different from saying that the post is a confirmation that f2p will happen in august. That's simply not true.

Originally posted by donger56 It doesn't even matter now, it's too late for WS. They released a game that no one wanted, at the wrong time, with the wrong business model. WS is a 2004 game released in 2014 plain and simple. They can try and do F2P, but it will only delay the inevitable failure and the game shutting down. NCsoft is pretty shrewd with failed games, they don't let them linger on endlessly like SoE/Daybreak. I don't expect WS will even make it to their 2nd year anniversary. Tabula Rasa went down the same way with NCsoft. Time to cut your losses and move on.
Don't agree. I like the game quite a bit and find it much more enjoyable than that other 2004 game.

My sentiments exactly. The game is fun and it will not fail. Carbine is still backing the game and adjusting content where needed. I can't wait to see new people in the game!

This doesn't really make sense though. I don't remember the ESO event but the SWTOR guy was a disgruntled former employees with an axe to grind. This guy seems genuinely to care for the game but at the same time that makes it so confusing.
Why undercut the official F2P announcement? To get e-famous on reddit with an anonymous name then pray you don't get fired if anyone figures out it's you?
The more baffling part is the attrition rate he is describing looks less like a game working on a F2P transition and more like people leaving what they know is a doomed project. I can't imagine those losses he described if the employees actually believed a F2P conversion could save the game.

If Carbine did one thing right, it was the business model. People are praying for a worthy subscription-based titel for ages and are beyond sick of getting milked by the pseudo-f2p, cash shop, paywall etc.-crap that flooded the market in recent years.
There are many people who would happily pay $50/month IF a game is worth it. The problem wasn't the subsciption, but Wildstar wasn't worth being paid for. They should have gone B2P + optional 6,99/month for some premium options (additional character slots, free server transfers each week etc) from the start.

Where are you getting this nonsense?
Their business model was clearly horrible for the game they had. The correct business model for some mythological super game that can command $50 a month has nothing to do with Wildstar which can't even get people to pay $15 a month.
Have you seen how many failed subscription games there are that had to go F2P/B2P? To command a subscription in 2015 your game has to be better than gw2/ESO/SWTOR/Rift/TERA all of which are available without a subscription. Currently only WoW and FFXIV seem to be able to thrive with a subscription. I don't see any evidence anywhere that there is something magical about the subscription model.

I don't think there will ever be a game that is widely determined to be deserving of a subscription. Somehow, it seems that a lot of forum posters have turned "I don't like this game" into "this game doesn't deserve a sub". When they should really be asking themselves, "would I play it if it were free?"
If the answer is no, then their thoughts on the payment model are invalid.

I am glad they are having problems. thats called karma. thats what they get for banning my account after it was hacked. they originally restored it, then changed their minds and banned my account. they then had the nerve to "reinvite" me to play again. call me a bad person, disgruntled, butthurt whatever..... but no matter how i look at it, it just makes me too damn happy. Eff you carbine!

Guild Wars was on Steam.
COH and SOV were on steam.
Pretty sure other NCSOFT games were on steam.
So nope, not surprising.
