What element of MMOs are trending in future MMOs?

mgilbrtsnmgilbrtsn Member EpicPosts: 3,430

I want to know what MMO trends are gonna be in the future.  Twitch combat?  PvP full loot?  Housing?  Quest Hubs? etc.  These are just examples to illustrate what I want to know.  This thread isn't intended as a 'I want to X mechanic in the future' or 'The industry needs X if it wants to survive' type of questions.

What is the current list of elements that are coming to MMOs in the near future?

MMOs with a winnable ending - some faction will win the game and the server restart to a new initial state.

    Trend-setters: Crowfall, Civilization Online

Twitch based action combat, solo gameplay, rapid (days) leveling to PvP based end game (requires minimal content development). Monetization will be primarily cash shop and designed around a 3-6 month life span as customers move on to the next game.

Let me check my crystall ball,oh yes oh yes the picture is clear.

Gigaserver technology™ (5 empty megaservers merged to 1 Gigaserver™) ,these servers are next gen ,megaservers will be last season, gigaservers makes you feel like theres lots of people playing, gigaserver uses technology from the future, when people are not playing  then gigaserver plays their characters for them and AI makes them also talk! no matter where you go you will hear HI and Bye and some random RP.

LFF will replace LFT ,LFT will be last season ,just click LFF and you will get phonecalls from new cool friends instantly and if you pay small fee then photos too! and if you pay large fee then videos ! Looking for friends™

MEGAshops (3 cash shops merged to 1) these are ultimate next gen,no more tiny cash shops inside the game now games are inside the MEGAshop™ , create account, login to MEGAshop ,buy the game (will be called buy2play) and start shopping!!

Imagine megawallmart and tiny flipper somewhere there inside (needs also tokens  to  operate correctly = free to play™)

Greenreen's post is both humorous and jarringly accurate in some ways, but as for actual game mechanics, I think this is where a lot of MMOs may be going. I think many devs overlooked ATITD because of the low population but they were on to something with resetting and starting a new Telling once the current iterations objectives were completed.

A lot of the PBBGs and Evony-like games (ex:Samurai Siege, Grepolis, Ikariam) kind of do this by just creating new servers. Actually, for a lot of Eastern games of that type, it isn't uncommon for dozens of new servers to come out each month. Also, instead of creating an expansion, they just scrap the old game and create a new one, re-skinned and updated to the new content.

PotBS took on resets because we've seen in some PvP MMOs (ex: Shadowbane Treachery server, UO's Faction Wars) one side can actually win the game. Instead of fight against the possibility of a win condition, a decent solution is to incorporate it as part of the game. Crowfall and Civ Online (not the defunct FB game) are great examples of MMOs heading in that direction.

Looking forward to more of that - persistent character, dynamic world.

Hadn't heard about this.  I'll have to check it out.  Not too familiar with Crowfall, but it makes sense for a civ style game.  I'm not sure it's a good thing for an actual MMO.  PPL invest a good amount of time in a character, and they won't want to see that effort deleted.

World resets don't necessarily have to mean a reset of the character or their belongings. In PotBS your character and your holdings remain untouched. In Crowfall, the player has their own Kingdom that remains persistent while world campaigns and major objectives have an actual beginning and end.

I believe the current trends will become more pronounced as it becomes easier to turn a profit off cheaply developed games designed to milk players over the short term.

Save for a few niche games, that IS the future of MMO's.

I know of at least one $25 / month service already.

    It's not an MMO though.

This may or may not fit depending on what sort of MMOs the OP is talking about.  I've seen it a few places in MMOs for portables.

Pay to Grind - Progression via activity (dungeon runs for example) is limited by putting dungeons behind an item shop currency pay-wall after a specified number of dungeon runs.

Such a design makes it impossible to play hardcore (many hours a day) without buying currency, yet allows casuals to play completely free for their typical (30 minutes or so) gaming session.

Virtual reality, when it goes mainstream, will break all the current models.

If anything can cause the downfall of WoW, it will be a VRMMORPG offering a fundamentally different experience that what is currently available in todays games.

I did this in War of Conquest. A game where you earned real money. I think that's the only part that made me find rebirth fun.

Looking at CSGO, TF2, DOTA and recently the Unreal Engine 4.

Player-interaction when it comes to add-ons, scripts, configs, modelling and all in a marketplace where everyone gets a share. We've grown up and a lot of us know how to code :P

Truely I believe UE4 will render most F2P models obsolete.

Naah, augmented reality is where it's at. You know, cuz what's scarier than a zombie trying to get into your virtual house? How about a zombie trying to get into your actual house!!!

Cross-Platform would be great if more companies did it.  It's annoying when trying to play with a buddy of mine who plays on an XBOX and I use the computer and can't play together.

I'm not sure yet if the virtual reality will be enough of a trend to be mainstream.  I haven't played around with it, but almost everyone says it's great and still improving.  If it's as good as ppl say, this would be a good trend.

Well I was just busting your chops <3 <3... and happen to agree ;p

Luckily, there will eventually be those outside of that trend. Dare I say it... The MMORPG will eventually return to it's foundation... to it's proper place... to that direction only begun of the Pen & Paper RPG once again. That ghost most certainly has unfinished business... image

    May I enhance this...

First is the cash shop to launch to Kickstarter because someone has to pay the Unity people to make the graphics.

Then is the early enrollment to the Kickstarter funded by the private donations on the site.

Then the Kickstarter for the game is announced after enough funding occurs. The goal of the Kickstarter will be to create a purely cash shop game with a "robust" economy.

Players will pay each time they access their character with "Giggle points", the game currency.

When you purchase enough Giggle points you may speak on the forum but only to post "LOL".

If you would like more than those three characters you must follow the company on Twitter where you will then receive 140 characters per forum post.

The cash shop in the game will sell all the traditional cash shop items including the UI interface and the ability to move in the game.

Each movement step costs 8 Giggle Points (may only be purchased in sets of 10, think hot dogs to hot dog buns).

Hotkeying movement beyond the default keys of 2, 8, F5, and / will result in spending Giggle Points.

After the first year credit cards will be issued by the United Giggle Bank within the game with a low, low interest rate of  24.9% with a 45 yearly fee. The terms will be listed in the TOS before downloading the game because you aren't expected to read them.

Once you have created and moved your character you will need to purchase some cash shop items to get yourself started. The game suggests a bag, a user interface for that bag for drag and drop ease, and some items for the bag itself.

Graphics for the bag itself are sold separately. Your purchase will allow you show off text on the screen that says 'bag'.

Go ahead make a forum post and screenshot your winnings, it's on sale right now, 82 GP! Screenshots are an additional 14 GP but saving them requires a title purchased for 350 GP "The Observer".

Any items obtained while playing the game itself will result in those items being sold in the cash shop. This is by decree of your Lord, you are on his property and all goods found are property of the realm.

You are the future of the game, the more you play, the more items exist which can be purchased by everyone! A genuinely robust cash shop economy and it only took us 7 Kickstarters to fund it :)

And it's all... free to play. Join today! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and donate today to our 8th Kickstarter.

When the expansion comes it will be themed on brotherhood. Instead of items you find appearing for sale in your game they will appear for sale in our partner's game. Their items found will appear for sale in our game. Then you have a reason to play all the games and pay all the games, that's the future of gaming since the cycle is complete.

The next expansion will randomly create items in partner games so that you play more games than you could possibly win and pay repeatedly chasing the carrot of the 2000's. RNG will be high here with lockboxes for sale that will randomly create an item for sale in another game. Imagine the wonderful messages you will receive about how many players were given the ability to purchase the items you found!

    -------

the future... it's dark -- but i heard they sell torches in the cash shop -- get on it

lol .. what make you think that?

Most MMOs today are just multiplayer hack-n-slash games.
