Most populated MMORPG you have ever seen

Sometimes you log into the game and see a wall of people, anyone got any story or screenshots of that?

I think old lineage 2 win there, all those sellers in Aden or at caslte siege, Tho first few hours when world of warcraft release new expantion is pretty packed with people to, no screenshots on either of that tho..

Lineage 2 and EVE Online are the first two that come to mind for me. It's been a while since I played Lineage 2, but I remember both Giran and one of the cities just before it were pretty packs on a regular basis, not just with the merchants but with the players travelling in and out of the city. In EVE, I've been in battles of a couple hundred and I've been in Jita (the current trade hub) when it seemed like there were that many flying around.

Most people per square inch on a server I've seen has to be vanilla EQ1. This is of course because there was no instancing and the vanilla world wasn't extremely large, especially at mid to high levels. This is the only game I know of that has ever done server splits, and there was definitely a reason for them.

For me it would have been in the 1st month or 2 following Rift's launch Running around Freemarch during a zone invasion.

A good run for it's money there, was the day that Wrath of the Lich King released, trying to quest through Hellfire Penninsula with EVERY single Deathknight on the server in the zone.

I agree. L2 always seemed more populated. Even now there's a lot of people and you'll see people in EVERY leveling zone almost.

Really depends on where in it's life cycle you're talking about.  If you're talking in the beginning, GW2 and Warhammer come to mind.  The place was uber crowded.  If you're talking mid game, GW2 once again pops to mind, WoW maybe.

It also depends on server.  Some servers can be completely full, while others aren't.  So you may think a game is dying if you happen to be on a low pop server.

A lot of variables in this.

While not actually players, seeing the sea of retainers in the old FFXIV 1.0 market stalls was always a crazy experience.

Without a doubt, its EvE online.  The game may not have the biggest community, lets face it, its almost niche.  But it knows how to pack people into a space.  Jita anyone?  Same goes for events,  it has the title for the biggest pvp battle of all time.  And thats recently, not game launch.

World of Warcraft - so populated, they actually have dozens of servers.

Any mmo ever, during beta or launch.  Or new area release.

An MMO is made to not have a wall of people these days, they spread them out as to not cause horrible lag issues.

The day Cata came out in World of Warcraft.

That was everyone in Stormwind lining up to get the new faster flight speed :)

No, that player on the box is not me. I was in the midst of that mess somewhere :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I can only assume 2/3rd's of those people were looking at BSODs.

Places like C-net (buff hubs) in pre-cu SWG when the Zerg (PVP guild on guild warfare) came through.

I'd say Archeage when the game launched and again when they launched Auroria.
Are you onto something or just on something?

    To recent imo.

Whilst the population in e.g. Dun Morogh in WoW just after WoW launched in 2004 was so bad it became a slide show I think you need to go back further in time before phasing was introduced in c. 2004.

Maybe Everquest around the tunnel connecting West Commons to Oasis were people used to congregate to sell things?

Edit: Dun Morogh as in Stormwind as post below.

Probably WoW. Those city hubs like Stormwind and Orgrimmar were always PACKED, especially around the AH and Bank. And that was only on one of the hundreds of servers the game has.

Of course with some MMOs it's much more difficult to tell because they use different instances of the same zone to keep to crowds down. With some of them, like SWTOR, you can more or less guess by checking the number of instances. But with others like ESO, where you're not allowed to switch instances easily (and see how many there are currently in existence) it's impossible to tell.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Even for an RP server, where less people usually gather, it was packed in WoW back in the day. The most people i've personally seen on screen in my experience, was during the AQ Gate event or Eranikus events. People massing up for the Outlands portal amounted to quite a few as well, i believe.

Earthen Ring EU was the server, if anyone wants to know. :)
