There are lots of mmo's with instanced content. It makes it more private than your 'modern' eq/wow style mmo but its still an mmo. Guild wars has an almost identical system and im sure other games i havent played do too.
MH won because they give back a lot to the players. After the last awards everyone got a generous in game present. So there was a major incentive here. It also has a very positive community unlike alot of other games which make you wonder why people are playing them if all they do is complain and whine.
MH has nicest community there is. And developers are actually nice people who interact with their community. So its nice that game is actually made by people who play it and are fans of staff added to game.
