So, in a nutshell, anyone who has ever had an account in WoW, come patch 6.1, will automatically have a "Starter Edition" of WoW account created for them. Meaning you can play any level 20 or less toon (with restrictions) for free. What's unique is you can now actually play any existing toons that are level 20 or below and can join a guild that contains other characters of yours that are currently guided.
That's it. Nothing else to see.

Actually with this addition, they could call it F2P now...
There are a lot of mixed messages coming in from Blizzard right now about it's business model as they have just put the monthly cost up, although kept the same for those who have a continuous sub, yet they are opening up the lower end of the game for all. With talk of a system similar to plex where you will be able to buy game time with in game gold there looks to be a big shift in the model on it's way sooner rather than later.
I would not have said that they will go exclusively F2P straight away, but maybe extend the F2P element of the game and maintain some sort of premium for subscribers, but it is difficult to see how that would work right now.

Yep it is F2P, but then it has been ever since the Starter Edition came out. You could play 20 levels of WoW for free way back in 2011. Where have you been?

It's pretty much f2p already, except you're restricted to level 20, whispers, general/trade chat, 10g, and certain races and classes were also restricted, but not anymore.
No, they could not call it F2P before, because existing accounts could not play, only new accounts. This is the change that makes this possible.

Soooo the big difference between this and the free trial - which affords many, many characters that you can level to 20 is ...

Can you imagine the horror if WoW announced that it was going F2P fo real? All those 200+ F2P MMOs will become deserted lol. Cause why would you play generic WoW clone 1 (e.g. Rift) when you can play WoW for free?
WoW goes F2P and they will probably get 100m "active" monthly users.
