Your All-Electric Vehicle May Not Be So Green, Study Says

 

People who own all-electric cars in places where coal generates the power are actually making the air dirtier, according to a new study. The key is the electricity's source. If it comes from coal, the electric cars produce 3.6 times more soot and smog deaths than gas, because of the pollution made in generating the electricity, according to the study published Monday by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They also are significantly worse at heat-trapping carbon dioxide that worsens global warming, it found.

    Before i even read the article,that is exactly the first thing that came to my mind was battery disposal.However yes it goes beyond that,sadly our human race has moved incredibly slow on mind achieving accomplishments,have we cured Cancer yet  or even the common cold :P.

    That article only applies to the dirtiest, most wasteful person in the world ALSO owning an electric car. The demographic for E-Car owners though, is usually among the same types of people that use fans instead of air conditioners during summer, have passive solar in their homes for heat rather than relying on electric heaters for winter and probably end up riding a bike if they're going somewhere nearby.

    The United States is the second largest energy consumer (19%) in terms of total use in 2010; China (prc) accounted for 20.3% and global energy consumption is increasing at the fastest pace since 1973.
    Consumption in the world's richest countries grew by 3.5 percent, the most since 1984; consumption in developing countries — particularly resource-hungry ones in Asia and South America — logged a 7.5 percent increase.

    In the US the majority of this energy is derived from fossil fuels: in 2010, data showed 25% of the nation's energy came from petroleum, 22% from coal, and 22% from natural gas. Nuclear power supplied 8.4% and renewable energy supplied 8% (mainly dams and biomass and to a lesser extent wind power, geothermal and solar energy.)
    Energy consumption has increased at a faster rate than domestic energy production over the last fifty years in the US; the difference largely met through imports.
    Gasoline is refined from crude oil. No surprise there, but most electricity in this country is also produced from burning fossil fuels. The real question when it comes to fuel economy is which of the two cars is the most efficient use of available fossil fuels?
    The refining process to convert oil into gas is more efficient, but the efficiency of the electric car more than makes up for losses during power production. In terms of efficiency, emissions and durability, the electric car has a clear advantage over gas.


    To hold 'electric cars' responsible for 'making the air dirtier' is being misinformed and shortsighted at best, at worst being intentionaly deceptive.
    Conventional cars are simpler and cheaper. For this reason, they are the go-to choice for the majority of new car buyers. Since the 1830s cheaper gas, better roads, mass-production techniques and a need for longer range spelled the end of the electric car.
    Electricity is the natural energy force that keeps society functioning at its most convenient level. It powers homes, hospitals, businesses, farms, factories, offices and transport systems. Electricity is an absolutely essential service.
    Those electric cars use a trace amount of commercial electricity. That electricity being derived from black coal, coal seam gas and natural gas fuels. By 2020 many communities aspire for 20% of electricity used to come from renewable energy sources.

    A study conducted by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power found that electric vehicles would reduce emissions substantially over 100,000 miles, producing just 75 pounds of pollutants, compared to the gas engine's 3,008 lbs. of pollutants.
    The California Air Research Board estimates that electric vehicles will produce more than 90 percent lower emissions than the equivalent gas engine.
    The research and results are staggering. The electric vehicle smashes the gas engine in terms of pollution.
