worth returning?

MrBum21MrBum21 Member UncommonPosts: 405

I played ARR for a few months after release, and greatly enjoyed the game.  Got a few classes maxed out, but just got tired of doing the same thing over and over again.  Grinding the same dungeon 30000 times to get tomes to get gear to grind the same dungeons on a harder level to get slightly better gear is not my idea of fun.

With this in mind is it worth me coming back?  some of the new jobs seem like they would be fun to play, but I don't know if it would be worth coming back for what is simply a different colored hamster wheel.

So here I am asking the always kind, and never trollish community at MMORPG.com for your thoughts :)

Give me a bit more information, what did you like about FF14 originally and what kindof MMO have you previously really enjoyed?

Oh and how long ago has it been since you played?

It has been several months since I last played.  I would guess about a year?

The biggest thing ARR has going for it is I enjoyed the classes (except the very small number of tank/healer options).  I also enjoyed the dungeons but once you got to higher levels you were stuck doing the same thing over and over again.  The same dungeons and the same primals just got gear up and do more of the same.

As for other MMOs I have enjoyed several through out my time.  UO before the world split, Asheron's Call, DAoC, WoW, and SWTOR.  I don't mind a theme park game until the soul crushing grind at the end.

Okay, then yes I do believe its worth a return for you. This will be a bit of a long post. So will edit this one as to why I "think" you'd enjoy the return.

Firstly as it has been about a year and you have not been keeping up to date it is worth you checking out what you have missed.

So, quite a lot to catch up with. The reason I make mention of the following is that for my monthly subscription I have received regular, quality content in such a mass that I am simply not accostumed to in any other MMO and this includes WoW. The activities in the game now give you quite a lot of variation.

Now, an MMO sadly isn't an MMO without some grind, its just how they work, they need the grind to keep you invested in the game, but at least now there are meaningful ways to progress outside of dungeons and fun activities to boot. Do you want to do daily missions from beast tribes that have their own story, their own mounts and minions?  Do you like looking for buried treasure perhaps with a bit of a gacha gacha reward system looking for that big score? How about more indepth crafting and materia options? What about a whole new class, the Rogue that leads to being a Ninja? Or my personal favourite which is the daily hunts, something that was in 1.0 in a simular way, but I find this system more akeen to how Final Fantasy 12 used to deal with it.

There is quite a lot to do and right now we are most likely just a month away from 2.5. This will be an important patch for a lot of people.

For one, it comes in two parts, it will be a massive storyline which will lead to all out war which will bridge the gap for the expansion. Not only this but Golden Saucer will also be coming out. If you are not familuar with it then you need to be. It is a massive amusement park, you can play games and win rewards such as classic Final Fantasy outfits (only Setzler has been revealed thus far) but you can also play the famed card game Triple Triad.

    Golden Saucer video here -

So that is about variation -----

Now to tackle your focus - Leveling an alt is easier now, not many people really FATE grind, those that do it are after ATMA stuff for their Zodiacs. This isb ecause doing dungeons actually nets good experience for leveling. Not only this there is a challange log which nets bonus experience for completing objectives.

For end game, you have CT which is more relaxed with the gear now, you have obviously the new dungeons now, for you it would be 8 new dungeons. You have a new raid ST and you can also queue some of the coils. In addition you have a party finder system which you can put groups together which is very receptive, I use it all the time for monster hunts or for dungeon running or even FATE grinding.

This is nothing to say about the expansion coming out in Spring -

New race the Au Ra - Dragon/human race https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=JZtP4mAfHqA

Three new job classes (that look freaking epic)

    Machinist -

    Astrologian - https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=E_L4CdG3wYA

    Dark Knight - https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=WhTmsfvTz-E

Also includes a new Raid story which takes you into the Primal Alexander / Flying Mounts / New dungeons / New level cap for all jobs including crafting / New beast tribes etc.

Now, if you have any specific questions I'll try and answer as best I can for you.

Personally, I would say wait a couple of months till Heavensward is about to come out and then resub about a month before to get caught up before it drops. New classes, level cap increase, flight, all kinds of good stuff will probably make FFXIV a pretty good wow contender if it isn't already.

I won't lie, the expansion has got me interested in returning.  The Rogue is a big part of me wanting to return too.

I would say yes. It is worth it to come back and experience the new story, dungeons and other content they have added since then. Or you can wait until the next patch that will probably be in a couple of months. If you want you can watch all the patch trailers on youtube to see what they added. They're pretty well done.

    Patch 2.1 - A Realm Awoken

Patch 2.2 - Through the Maelstrom

Patch 2.3 - Defenders of Eorzea

Patch 2.4 - Dreams of Ice

Final Fantasy 14 ARR - to me - is the best MMO since I was heavy into WoW. The content released is enough to keep me coming back. Because I play other games as well I normally let my sub die out then return once I've finished with my back log. Quality content.

Rogue is very fun as is Ninja, but I am looking forward to the Golden Saucer and for the Astrologian job in xpac.

For you, I would say join, level up a Rogue and get your house in order ready to progress into the xpac.

Tsumoro, links for Astrologian and Dark Knight are broken for me.

I just resubbed today, and I've been having fun. Though I've only ran around a bit doing Rogue stuff.

Glad you are having fun! I liked the game and my son is trying to get me back into it. In fact, we were just on Skype while he played FFXIV and I was playing WoW. He said a huge majority of people are trying the rogue. I might have to see how it is!

If the end game is what burned you out, yeah I can understand that. THe end game, at the very end, hasn't really changed that much. You got some new Coil instances, and a few more trials and dungeons apart from that, but the gear-chase is still very much the same. I have shied away from Coil, but I do find the new dungeons and especially the new trials to be a lot of fun.

That being said - the gear chase has greatly expanded, and you are up from i70->i90 options that existed when ARR first released. So you have a bit before you get to the gear chase. The Relic quest has been greatly expanded - it's still very grindy, but a lot more to it now than just do some minorly agitating stuff then beat Titan HM.

Apart from that, there is now housing, gardening, greatly expanded crafting, minorly expanded gathering, roulettes, party finder, and several new side quests. For any other title, it's well more than a full expansions worth of content that has been added since release.

Rogue is fun, or at least I thought so. It isn't perfect, it isn't overpowering or game breaking, but it was unique - it's different enough from monk and dragoon, and it has some flashy moves and some interesting mechanics to it.

Rogue/Ninja alone is reason, if you have any interest at all, to make at least 1 month's sub worth-while before the expansion drops. Once the expansion does drop, I don't know how Y-P is going to handle it -- if the previous content will still be somewhat relevant, or if it will be pretty much disregarded with the level cap increase. The new content since release is worth a peak at the least, even if you already had a few classes leveled up.

I do enjoy this game. I think I just got bored dpsing. I may give healing / tanking a shot.

This is about the only game where I truly enjoyed healing.  The big thing with healing in this game is the pace, it is really easy to waste mana over healing because you expect your basic heals to only do a little bit, but would heal for a decent chunk of life.  Granted this was a while ago so things might have changed, but I did enjoy it.

Tanking wasn't bad, playing a tank in WoW helped a lot.

One thing you need to realize and understand is that within the game, you have your typical themepark mmo... This is all you mention and so I must assume that it's all you care about. If you're just looking to level characters and do some dungeons/raids then this game has plenty to offer you... But so does a lot of other games.

You mention that you love these games up until the point where there's a grind... Well, sorry to disappoint you, but all games are this way ESPECIALLY if all you do is dungeon/raid crawl.

ARR has SO MUCH more to offer than what you've mentioned and I'd hate to see someone give up on a game because of one part of it without experiencing everything that it has to offer.

Here are a couple things you can do to make your experience better:

    1. Join a good Free Company - Don't join your typical run-of-the-mill Free Company that just focuses on Raids and mentions a thing or two about helping with leveling, ect. Join a well rounded Free Company with people you actually enjoy talking to that do everything from leveling, housing, crafting, ect. You will have a much better time if you play with people that you would eventually call friends.

    2. Broaden your gameplay - Don't just focus on Dungeons and Raids... Try the other things that the game offers. I personally love crafting because it is very unique. The more things you open yourself up to doing, the less likely you are to become bored or get burned out.

Theres an incredible amount of new people atleast on Odin EU, its awesome to see how alive the game is right now, im sure the expansion will build on this aswell.

I spent a good few hours on last night. I mostly dinked around leveling a rogue while also trying to figure out all the new stuff I may not have been aware of. A friend of mine was detailing the end game weapon progression, and it sounds bonkers lol. (In a good way!)

But main problem I left was that before lv. 20 i run out of all quests but insane fate grind. I plan to return just hope at least this part was solved but can hardly believe as is not so easy to reinvent bad questing.
