Destiny: The Dark Below Launches on December 9th

Today Bungie announced the official details and launch date for Destiny's first expansion, The Dark Below. President Harold Ryan had this to say:

"Destiny was created as a living universe, which has allowed us to improve the experience post launch in real-time. It also gives us insight into the things players are looking for in new content. We've seen from feedback that people want new activities, gear and weapons, and of course the immensely popular Raid. The community helps shape our development decisions and that's really important to us."

Destiny Expansion I: The Dark Below will feature the following:

  • New weapons, armor, and gear to earn, including Legendary and Exotic items

  • Light Level cap raised to 32 and five additional Bounty slots added

  • New story quests and missions - after years hiding amongst the Hive shadows, a new character, Eris, has come forth bearing an ominous warning: The Hive seek to summon a god, Crota, to destroy the Earth. Find Eris in the Tower to take on special quests that include three new missions where you will increase your Light and earn new rewards

  • New cooperative Strike, The Will of Crota, pits you and your Fireteam against Omnigul as she works to expand the Hive army at the command of her master, Crota

  • Three new competitive multiplayer arenas

    • Pantheon - set deep within the Black Garden in an ancient Vex temple that features Vex-designed landscapes and tight corridors

    • Skyshock - an old interplanetary defense array that offers both vehicle and infantry engagements

    • The Cauldron - an abandoned Hive ritual site that offers close-quarter combat

  • New six-player Raid, Crota's End, set deep within the depths of the Hellmouth

  • PlayStation platforms will also get access to an exclusive cooperative Strike,The Undying Mind, and more (timed exclusive until at least Fall 2015)

Is this a paid expansion or a free one?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

The Dark Below will cost $20 on its own or can be obtained by purchasing Destiny's Expansion Pass, a $35 ticket to both The Dark Below and an upcoming expansion.

the first 5 bullet points look like more reputation grind. I'll wait for reviews and gameplay videos before opening my wallet.

So PS4 gets more in there expansion for the same price? If so Bungie can go pound sand.

This game is such a snooze fest...massive changes need to occur to make this game fun. Go to location A kill shoot things. Go to location B, let Ghost bot do something...kill things while he does it. Fight boss that takes almost no damage for 10 minutes. Repeat. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Sucks to be you that your missing out, I play the game with friends, explore and do strike missions and play a fun game.... Not sure what you wanted, but a lot of people actually love it. Great game for people who can't play an MMO and raid for hours, I love that they keep them short.

I dont see it any different from mmos that make you pay 15 dollars a month for new content.  This is basically like paying 20 dollars every two-three months for major content update.  And free smaller content in between which they have been doing since release.

Destiny release date September 9th.  Dark Below December 9th.  If my math is correct thats more than 1 month.

And Bungie called it before Angry Joe since they let everyone know about the Dark Below before Destiny was released.

Since this doesnt have a cash shop like other buy to play online games they have to make money some how to keep Destiny persistent right?

Oh, you mean the content we should of got in the base game we paid for? No thanks...

I see you never paid any attention at School.

    Destiny launched at Sept. 9.

    This DLC launches at Dec.9.

I don´t know on which planet you live. Here on Earth we have the months October and November between those two dates.

That makes it Three months till this first DLC and not one!  Which is pretty much on par with any other console game that released the last years with it´s DLC´s.

Destiny is a fully online multiplayer game, with huge server and bandwith upkeep costs. Just like with any other MMO.

MMO´s have either 15 bucks a month subscription fee or a cash shop (or both these days) to keep making Money and cover these costs.

Bungie does it through quartely DLC packs.

They have to make Money somehow to keep paying these ongoing costs. /shrug

And if you don´t like it. Move on and stick to single player games. Which, by the way, milk you with DLC too these days. So good Luck!

They needed this with players dropping in droves.

The expansion will only bring them back for another week or so though. Once they grind through the content and more lame mega-hitpoint bosses the servers will dry up again.

Wasn't "The Dark Below" a possible Expansion Title for World of Warcraft? Think it was to do more with the Old God under the sea and expand upon Neptulon.

Hope this doesn't mean legal battles in the future...tired of those; just want good games :D

Psst! Borderlands did this too. Oh! And if you think than any game that ships doesn't have unreleased content  on it being prepped for release, you're dumb.

Sorry, new content doesn't just materialize out of thin air. There's actually a considerable amount of work required for any new content. That's why we usually only get things like map packs. In this case, though, there is an extension of the story, and there will be the same type of extension of content in the next release, and the one after that. Even if it didn't ship on disc, if you think that a large chunk of content hasn't already been worked on, or been completed, or be in testing, you're at idiot.

Shoot, look at Warlords of Draenor. It's been in public testing for over 6 months! Granted, it's more content, but if you're expecting that they don't already have, say, a year worth of content pretty well fleshed out and in testing of at least some sort, you're just crazy. I wouldn't want it any other way, I don't want them releasing me content that basically hoses my progress to date, or something stupid like that. We shouldn't be, and won't be, getting early builds. This is all content that's been in development for a while.

I too will wait for the gameplay reviews before opening my wallet. If it's more of the same, I'll be passing and probably recycling my copy for something with a little more longevity in my opinion.

I am already disappointed the spotlight new missions include an enemy faction already in the game. If they were going to do that, I would've preferred they spent more time diversifying their existing faction mobs and bosses.
