It remains in 1st place becuse it remians the best. Unmatched pvp, unmatched charcater growth, totally free expansions and a great community.
If you havnt tried it... definately do.
Actually, to be a little more accurate.
Eve-Online remains 1st because it has a VERY loya fan/subscriber base. For those people that like the style fo the game, there is nothing out there to beat it... and it also is able to mix a number of "styles" of play very successfully.
The pure combat PKers are needed in this game - they get a good reason to go out and gank people and feel good about themsevles and contribute positively to the game (alliances especially)
The pure "carebare" PvE gamers are supported in empire space safe from most player threats.
People interested in complex systems and exploring min/max possibilities are supported in the complex art of ship fitting and T2industry - Power use, CPU use, tracking, damage, range, speed, damage type, defenses are all inter-related and affect each other, so there is an eternal search for a "best" ship for a particular job (which after 3 years still hasn't been found and suprises can still be had)
The socialisers have their politics and forum wars - which really affect the game as well as the other players are free to shoot/support them in-game too.
CCP supports all this with great service and the game devs (coders, testers, managers) all take part in discussions on IRC and the forums - and are very dedicated to their game and its ideals.
Because of all that, the players love the game, and support it in every way they can.
Even people who might not find the game perfect for them, most can still appreciate somethings about the game, and hence give decent scores to it...
Thats why its still number 1
today i know because eve is the first ! i play it, and i don't will like stop playing it, the eve is a perfect game u can make ur future, and u can call more friends to go kill a other player for bounty =DDDD but have caution =D
Yeah, a free trial is a no-brainer. The tutorial is long, but well worth it - you get a good reward at the end. Besides which, just go their web site and check out the short stories on the main page. You should go back and read some of the archived ones as well. Sets a good mood for getting into your pod.
You will be surprised in what you can accomplish in 14days. Keep in mind the noob frigate you start in is slow and weak. The next upgrade isnt that far off if you start running missions, so dont think youre stuck with it. But you will never lose it. You can have a hangar full of ships. And there is a help channel that you can talk in if you run into an issue.
