So as long as it wasn't a linear themepark with raid/dungeon endgame - but something more open-ended that was player driven (more sandboxy) - I'd give it a whirl regardless of setting.
To me lore is a book
setting is backdrop
game world is the game (although one could mean setting to mean this as well)

I would be up for a game based off of something like this. I really agree with the idea of making a historically accurate Vikings MMO like the Vikings show on History Channel. Personally I would be fine with any other religion as the theme as well, doesn't really bother me one way or the other.
Then we can say that Everything that goes well for us is thanks to the game.
And when something fails or goes horribly bad, it may look like we are to blame for being pathetic excuses of humans, but it's just the game working in mysterious ways!
What do you propose would be available for the design of this game before this alleged natural disaster? What do you offer as the natural state of the world before said hypothetical catastrophe?
What do you propose would be available for the design of this game before this alleged natural disaster? What do you offer as the natural state of the world before said hypothetical catastrophe?
The game would take place hundreds of years before the flood even happens in a post-apocalyptic/pseudo-fantasy setting
Are you asking me what the explanation is for characters respawning after death? Well off the top of my head lets say the fallen angels thought mankind science and technology and to harness the power of their own spirit (similar to harnessing your Chi like martial artists but on a much greater level). And lets say mankind created devices called soul-harvesters from what what they learned from the fallen angels. The devices are also remnants from civilizations long ago and are spread through out the world and humans with a strong level of spirit can attune them selves to these.
These types of technology were the humans attempt to become as powerful as the angels and humanity became too corrupted as they were not ready for such things like handing a 5 year old with a gun. There were human against human conflict, human against angel conflicts, and angel against angel conflicts and there were also the Nephilim that basically got cought up between those conflicts. They were created by the angels to serve as servants and humans started using them as slaves. But small groups of them went into an exodus to escape and live away from them while the ones who didnt make it died off in the violence of humanity and angels. In the games present time they are scattered and rare to find. Now fallen angels have lost much of their power due to extended time away from grace, but they are still very formidable and many of them were killed during those conflicts.
In the games present time some of those fallen angels still want to control humanity and they saw this as a great time to do it because humanity has become desperate and starving with no real civilizations or the technology they once had. So these fallen angels started posing as false Gods to them offering salvation and because they gained spiritual power from the humans worshiping them.
But some fallen angels who are very few in numbers want to repent for what they did to the world and learned the error of their ways so they want to stop those false gods but need the help of humans. But they saw that much of humanity has lost their spiritual power and are no match for the false gods and the abominations that inhabit the wasted earth. So they re-activate the soul harvesters which still contained many souls of humans from the past, so they finally free them. You the player emerge from these and are very weak at first but through out your journeys will gain your former strength back.
this OP sounds like the book sellers on late night TVshows here in my country which talk under earth races (Nephilim), the lost ancient Greek Atlantis, pure fascism mixed with stupidity and totally inaccuracy !

So does that mean that the great flood is going to wipe the entire MMO away and everyone needs to contribute to the ark fund if they want to keep their characters from being deleted?

It would be more like the Ark would be to save the NPCs and player avatars would be drowned.
Probably would receive too much controversy. You'll notice games like Diablo specifically avoid using actual Judeo-Christian mythology while very much being inspired by it.
It also automatically turns some people away. I happen to think some of the darker parts of the Bible are really cool. But a lot of people see anything religious and go "lame".
Much better idea to have something loosely inspired by this concept rather than directly using it. You can get the same feel without the religion.
Greek Mythology is free to use though because no one actively practices it anymore... at least I don't think they do.
A world that takes place before the great flood in a wasteland Earth destroyed by the violence of humanity
Remnants of advanced civilizations and their technology scattered throughout the world
The mainland would be one big super continent
Places like the Land of Mu, Shambhala, Atlantis and other places of legends would be explorable
Creatures and other types of beings would exist that never made it through the flood
Beings such as the Nephilim (human/angel hybrid) and fallen angels both with good and evil intentions
Some fallen angels would be posing as false Gods to try to control humanity, Gods such as Odin, Zeus, Ameterasu and such
Players would be Humans struggling to survive in this world and will meet characters like Gilgamesh for example.

El Shaddai: The Ascension of the Metatron had a positive response and the game is based on the Book of Enoch, where you actually play as Enoch one of Gods Prophets. Satan is in the game as well but not as a protagonist.
In Castlevania Lords of Shadow, Satan is the last boss of both games, and the main character who is Dracula constantly mentions God and how he is his Chosen one to defeat Satan.
There is also Dantes Inferno
Xenogears and Xenosaga heavily referenced Christian themes and used the word God a lot
Lord of the Rings is all about Islam and Christianity for example Gandalf rides a white horse and this represents in Islam the Mahdi who also rides the white horse in the final battle and assists Jesus the true king and Messiah of Islam. The last movie is called Return of the King lol. Sauron is basically a fallen angel and is Satan.
I wouldnt even have to mention the flood at all instead give subtle hints throughout the game like having characters like Gilgamesh from the Epic of Gilgamesh that has nothing to do with the Bible and predates it and have Noah in a different name Utnapishtim from ancient Mesopotamia which also talks about the great flood.
God of War Subtly hints at Noahs Ark through pictures and the end of the series the great flood happens.

I know your being sarcastic
But the in-game present time would take place much further back like hundreds of years before the flood even happens. And its more about the things that happened to cause such a catastrophic fate of the old world.
Sounds great! I want to visit lost civilizations. I don't care if they were once real or not. It's still going to be fantasy because we don't know enough about that far back.
But the real question here is how does an mmo make exploration exciting on a game level? I mean outside of my going "oooh, ahhh?" Btw I H A T E achievements; there is nothing worse than finding out you accomplished something and got nothing but a pat on the back for it. Getting xp reward for exploration also sucks.
Agnostic = Everyone - because no one really knows, as there is no evidence for or against.
Atheist = Lack of belief in a god(s) and/or Deity(s) - simple as that, nothing more, nothing less.
I am an Atheist, just like you are Atheist to Thor, Mithra, Zeus, Krishna, Allah and the Flying Spaghetti Monster etc...we just include all god's into the mix for the same reasons you do with the others that you don't believe in, there is absolutely no evidence for any of them other than ancient stories and hearsay written and spoken by man and until there is evidence, Atheist is the default position as you were not born religious, you are indoctrinated by your parents (usually) and told stories/led to believe without evidence.
That being cleared up:
I am interested in all types of religion and their ancient stories, they are fascinating and make for great fictional stories, since the majority also have bloody history with wars, mass killings and religion vs religion with both claiming they are right or have the better god/deity/invisible sky thing, it makes for good faction background and lore for some games.
Personally I am not interested in playing a game that includes these fictional stories, since a lot of it has already been done in some way, I would rather something new and fresh, to get people excited again in the story side of things.
In saying all of that though, I would never hold a religious belief against someone, everyone is free to believe in what they want, without restrictions, but when it is passed on as law/fact without any evidence to back it up, that is when people get angry/upset.
So if enough people are interested in your idea, then I would welcome more attention to MMORPGs, no matter what it's based off of, just please don't let them put "fact" or "based off of real history" etc in the description, as that would be a lie, it need to be labelled "fantasy" or "fiction".
*Evidence = Observable, testable and able to withstand peer review.
*Faith = Belief without evidence
*Theory = A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world that is acquired through the scientific method, and repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation.
Remember, gravity is a theory but you know not to walk off a ledge 7 stories high...
But the in-game present time would take place much further back like hundreds of years before the flood even happens. And its more about the things that happened to cause such a catastrophic fate of the old world.
The cause? God felt like it was time for earth to exit beta status and wiped every character. He didn't tell anyone they were in beta and all progress would be lost but hey, he is god. You can't really say no.
Now one may wonder why would god need beta testing, the almighty could have made a perfect sim game from the get go.
Sorry to be off-topic, but this make me want a "Pangea" MMO. Kind of like "Terra Nova"... humans end up in prehistoric and pretty much every single thing out there is so large you basically can't kill stuff alone unless you're extremely good and prepared. It'll be more of a survival game, building up your settlement and protecting it from the dinos that keep trying to enter/attracted by the cycled hum of your prehistoric powerplants (whatever that may be).
Please not religion in my games as well, I have to put up with enough of it in real life. There seems to be a special little place carved out in our society for the religious where those with mental disorders would be sectioned and all those with other superstitions would be ostracised.
I really do not want to placate them in games as well.

Theres religion in pretty much every fantasy game. Aion for example is basically about Angels aganst fallen angels. Lord of the Rings has Christianity and Islam written all over it.

Any game with a faction or god based story could try and make it sound like it was based off of modern day religion and that's because it is good fiction and suits fictional worlds nicely, with a few tweaks of course.
Developers are smart enough to avoid using real religion in games, so they change and twist stories to suit their worlds better, just like man does with religion, also like how christianity did to pagan traditions etc.
It's common to copy or borrow something if it suits you better, modern day religion continues to do it to this day and since it is all based from ancient stories and hearsay, there is nothing wrong with it at all, it makes for mostly, good stories, if you ignore all the killing, rape, incest, bribes, tricks and molestation

While it's impossible to create a good mmorpg with the kind of investors you get these days (unless it's some quest grind dummed down nonsense)...you could instead take your great ideas (and they are very good I believe) and write a series of novels. Perhaps, after publishing the first few, you could work with a graphic artist team and make a graphic novel. From there, you can try to work your way into the movie industry.

Here would be an interesting setting: http://www.numenera.com/overview/
It is a pnp setting that is being made into a RPG video game later this year by Inxile (https://torment.inxile-entertainment.com/).
Then setting is wonderful, however the PnP rule set was designed by Monte Cook and had a little too much power creep much like D&D 3e did.
James T. Kirk: All she's got isn't good enough! What else ya got?
