EVE... catching up?

themcpatriotthemcpatriot Member Posts: 2

I simple question I guess, I'd like to try out EVE, but I'm concerned that with their skillpoint system, there will be absolutely no way to catch up to the veteran players.

From what I've read so far, it seems like there is no Skillpoint cap. If I were to join now, would I forever be at a disadvantage? Or is there some way to catch up?

The only thing a veteran will have on a new player is diversified skills.  You'll be able to compete within 2 months if you specialize but there really isnt any way you'll ever actually catch up.  Let me add that theres no need to catch up.  Once you get to playing and understand the skill system and how things work you'll find that its not hard to compete with even the most ardent veteran.

    Always remember, skillpoints =/= Levels.
Skillpoints is more like LITERAL experience, in that you can have an enormous amount of experience in trading, and still be no better off in combat that a 1 day old noob.
Therefore, specialisation is king. If you can do one thing very well, it doesnt take much skillpoints and youll probably do it better than one of the older players who didnt even have access to that skill until recently and so have much more diversified skills.

Furthermore, factors such as implants and podding mean you CAN catch up, its just gonna take a while (like 2 years). Some players have 40million skillpoints after 2 years as a result of good choice of attributes and implants, others have 20million. Obviously if you get 40m in 2years, then youll be onpar with the weaker 4 year players.

yeah, after posting this I read through most of the other thread about this issue. I'm still kind of wary, but I'll give it a shot this weekend on the 14 day trial.

Well in the simple answer is no you will never be able to catch up. Skill point for Skill point.

BUT!!! that does not matter at all.

Due to the diversity of game play in this game you will still be able to play with the vets in no time...

At this point in time it is impossible to have every skill in the game.. and the developers have done this on purpose. this makes for a game and player base that is always different in some way.

But within i few a few weeks you will be able to do i little of everything... or if you want to do something like mining you can work on only those skills (or related skills that making mining better like refining and the piloting or industrial ships). or you can go hard core into combat and pvp or be a jack of all trades... like i am.. im an excellent miner, great at manufacturing, ok at combat, and just starting to get into researching.

Also another thing to think about is that people are always coming into he game so you will have to deal with people that have millions and million more skillpoints then you. but there will always be people that have less point then you as well a few months down the road.

Most of the people that play the game are mature.. and i always recommend looking into joining a good corps. as soon as possible. As they will help out allot with learing what is what in the game.

I have played allot of other MMO's including WOW(4 months) and starwars galaxies (2 years) and EVE (8 months).

And i have to say that i have not found a better player base in a game yet. even some of the criminals in the game that have killed me to take my stuff where mature about it. and you could even hold a conversation with them afterwards that was not all HAHA i RoXoRzzzed you a$$!!!!! i even had one guy tell me how to avoid his type of people next time (taught me about defenses and ways to run if i know i cant win).

of coarse there is always that one person that is an idiot. but all in all... this game seems to have allot less of them.

I definitely recommend this game. but also i understand that its not a game for everyone.

Most of the other poeple in this forum have it right on the ball. (*snicker, sorry I couldnt resist image) You can focus your skills to a very specific thing (and learn learning skills in order to decrease the time those skills take). This way you CAN compete iwth a higher level character, just with a less diversity within your skills. If you need any help (if you get the trial), let me know.

lv4 (2 days training) v lv5 (say 20 days) in a skill is only a small percentage of an improvement. A player with 1m skill points can kill a player with 40m skill points if they have better strategy and combat experience. No need to worry about skills. Its YOUR skill that matters most.

Not gonna repeat the explanation but :

If you specialize, you can catch up.

    That is all.
