FFXI has lost large numbers of players and the players that use those languages are so small it's not worth the cost of the translators to work on it anymore.

Yoshida has nothing to do with FFXI.

Dear valued FINAL FANTASY XI player,

We have an announcement regarding an important change for FINAL FANTASY XI in-game text support. At present, players are able to choose between Japanese, English, French, and German language options, but due to the decreasing numbers of French and German language players, we have had to make a difficult but necessary decision on the support for these two languages. As such, we will be removing the French and German language options from FINAL FANTASY XI after the July 2014 version update, but will continue to support Japanese and English. Of course, French and German-speaking players will be able to continue playing using their current characters and settings in an English language environment. (Note that some macros may need to be modified.)

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our francohpone and germanophone players for their fantastic long-time dedication to FINAL FANTASY Xl, and will continue to provide French and German speaking customer support services.

Although it greatly saddens us that we will no longer be able to offer in-game text for these two languages, English localisation support will continue, and we hope that you will continue to experience exciting adventures in the world of Vana’diel.

    Akihiko Matsui, FFXI producer

    1. Yoshi-P has nothing to do with FFXI
    2. This is a letter from the producer, not some low level company lackey
    3. This was announced April 30th. SO you've had about, oh 45 days or so to prepare.

    thanks :)

Its not about the language change, its about  how it was handled, and yes Yoshi-P is the producer of both games.

Akihiko Matsui is the producer. DO you even play this game?

Ok so Matsui is, but it was handled completely wrong.  I'll change the main post.

    1. Why is this in FFXIV forum?

    2. The fanbase for XI is near extinction

    3. The fanbase for XI that uses those languages is probably already extinct

Also like others said, Yoshi-P has nothing to do with any of this.

The funny part is that the sub fee for FFXI is higher than the sub fee for FFXIV.

FFXI is still very popular in Japan but not in the west, which is the main reason they have done this.  They still have 15-20 servers but NA/EU prime times usually peak around 400-500 people per server.  JP prime still goes upto 1-2k though.

I think this is the start of the end for FFXI in terms of cost cutting, they won't shut it down because it's a nice cash cow but they will start cutting patches and devs back now.

Maybe you can post on the FFXI forums where it might be seen by the developers. Complaining here is like talking to a 3 yr old about why Mustangs are better than Corvettes.... pointless.
