Anyone understand the quest dialogue...is the storyline good?

KarbleKarble Member UncommonPosts: 750

I enjoy the RP side of the game and the build up of partially connected story both within a quest area and over-arching storyline progressions.

Does anyone that understands the language know if the cut-scene dialogue provides at least half the level of Rift or WoW in this area?

All I see on twitch is people that don't know the language skipping any quest cut scenes since they are still in the native language.

The rest of the game is worth the investment, but I do like story and that would be great icing on the cake for me.

And before people chime in that the quest completion info is in english so why the concern.....the quest completion info gives no context at all most of the time about the storyline or why you need to kill 10 giant ants for this person.

Thanks in advance for responses.

I don't know. But the questing is so far from the games strong point I'm not too worried about it.

As a role player myself I mostly ignore the quest info as far as my character goes anyways. It's hard to roleplay "the chosen one" when everyone else is too.

The story and the lore is there but you really have to pay attention if that is what you're there for. And as far as the "one that saves us all" story, its a bit more than that. The game acknowledges that there are many special people.

So is it good or not? What have the Korean said about the main story line quest?

for the translated quest, I'm at lvl 12 and have read through all the text, but upon release, I will just click click click because the side quest storyline is just boring.

To fully understand AA lore you'd have to read the korean novels (which i haven't) or read a few summaries on the net. The story isn't that innovative. You are the good guy fighting this bad organisation that killed your family etc..
So yeah don't expect anything epic about the main story of your char; but then again it's not what AA is about.
The are a few scattered quests around the world, that briefly explain what happened on the north continent or in that specific zone.
The quests and main story are well done imo; but the story around them is average.

The story is based upon a korean novel, the first part of a trilogy. Two books have been published so far and the game revolves around the first of these books. Both books are bestsellers in korea but neither of them have been translated nor published in the west.

The contents of the second book are planned for expansions in the game but I am guessing it kinda depends upon the success of the game.

All the voiceovers and the storyline scenes are still in korean in the Alpha, so it isnt really possible for us westerners to judge the story.

I do wonder what Trion has been doing this past year - maybe they only have one translator?

You can please some MMO-players all of the time and you can please all MMO-players some of the time but you can't please all MMO-players all of the time.

It's a sandbox game, stop worrying about storyline and start ganking!!!

Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

Trion doesn't translate the game - they do what every publisher does, hire an external company to do it. Then you hire voice actors to record it, then you have to QA it,and submit it to the original Dev studio (XL in this case).

BTW the English voices are done, Victoria said that they have been submitted to XL and XL is going to patch them into the game (remember that Trion can't touch the game code).

As far as the waiting game - it makes sense - MMOs get patched and changes over time - every publisher waits to do voiceover work last - as that way they get the "current" patch level - otherwise your could waste money in voice work that could get scrapped.

So voicework get done last, befoee the game goes to beta, as at that point you know what goes in what goes out.

Thanks for this b it of info. That puts it on an earlier timeline in my mind for beta start and official launch. I was a bit concerned to be honest, but now it sounds on track for many people's proposed June time period for beta possibly. I do like all the other content in the game so much that if there was no real story I could totally be ok with it. But since it looks like they put time into a full backstory, it must at least have seemed worthy to them at the time. My self hype-meter for the game just went up another notch. :)

What story line?  Maybe when they translate the cut screens I'll care but everything was 100% skip worthy.  When you're in a zone under conflict do you want to read text and be in cut screen?

"Don't nobody got no time for that!"

Don't waste your time. It's pretty skip worthy.

"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"

I think, that if you expect anything "WoW-like" from this game, then you are looking at the wrong game IMO. I haven't partaken, so I would defer to anyone who has, but from everything I've read, questing is more like something you do when your bored or sometimes leveling if you want to, but its not an important feature of the game (as with many sandbox styles).

WoW-like? The story in WoW was terribad. I don't think i ever red a single quest, nor ever got interested in the world. For MMORPGs is not easy to have an interesting story. Of all the mainstream MMOs that i'm aware the only one with decent story is GW2 pre-living story.

If you are playing ArcheAge for the quests you will be sorely disappointed.  Don't waste your time.

Some of my favorite quests were in EQ.

There was a quest line where you had to find out this guy's favorite beer while talking to him and then purchase a few rounds and give them to him before he gave you what you needed.

There were quests that relied on the something happening at a specific time of day or night. There were both small and epic quests. You had to partly use imagination, but if you listened to dialogue and followed clues, there was good times to be had.

I am not looking for a game that re-writes the way questing is done. As a matter of fact, a little retro wouldn't be half bad in my book.

I am just happy they included them since it sort of rounds out all the great sandbox elements by bringing in a familiar feature all instantly know and can gravitate to, even if it's just for a sort of tutorial and some leveling early on.
