Level of Commitment

hockeyplayrhockeyplayr Member UncommonPosts: 604
Just a simple question for those who are a higher level in the alpha (currently only lvl 10).  Can I get away with only playing this game 1-2 times a week.  Or is it going to require a full investment of free time to accomplish anything?  Reason being i am away from home most of the week and my laptop cannot handle the game.

You can play it as often or as little as you want. If you want a farm(s)/house though you'll have to make some effort to make some gold/harvest crops/care for (and butcher) animals)

I'm loving  the game a LOT...but not sure if I'll be able to commit to the time requirements I am now seeing in front of me (with my original plan to have multiple farms, fishing, mechanics, crafting and the works). We'll see.

Yeah I am afraid I'll miss out on things like owning a farm if I cannot log in frequently.  I may just have to splurge for a new laptop.

I grew up playing runescape when i had all day to play if I wanted to and I still play other mmos as well. Just ones that are capable of running on an older laptop.  I just wanted to see if it would be viable to play archeage as well, if it would only be 1-2 days a week.  Trust me if it isn't I'll prob end up just upgrading.

For the same reason that people who have very few vacation days still want to spend those in the sun of a foreign country. Even though they may not have the time to visit every city and learn its culture, they want to enjoy the little time they have to see the world.

The type of experience an mmo brings, being part of a huge online world you share with thousands of people, is not brought by any other type of game. I see no reason why this type of game should only cater to lonely jobless guys who live in their mothers basement.

As for the OP's question, I can't anwser that for Archage, but I do know that Guild Wars 2 is the perfect game for someone who has little time.

Also there are differences between needing time commitment and needing to time commitments. AA is a fantasy MMO (to a degree)  with a healthy (more than 50%) dose of Second Life.

Most MMOs you can log in a play for an hour or two, do a few quests and head on back to RL. FOr AA though, to experience it all, its going to to be a serious timesink.

The OP asked a valid question. Many/most MMOs don't require a lot of time to get the brief bursts of enjoyments (probably the best/healthiest kind). AA will.

That said sure u can doa few quests and do some PvP but 50% or more of the game is farming, housing, crafting etc etc etc...and a few more etcs.

I do agree that a game should not segregate players and cater more so to the person who has all day to play however.

These are SUPPOSE to rpg's,if i can't afford the time which i cannot right now,i simply don't play, there are thousands maybe a million other games out there to use up your spare time.

I think the point missed is that IF you decide you want to play a MMORPG you should want to play a MMORPG...did that make sense? You can't use the argument that it offers a whole different experience and should not cater to those that play it as a RPing experience.

The analogy is simple, playing basketball by yourself shooting hoops in the court is not the same as playing with a team. However you can't start saying i don't want the game of Basketball to ONLY cater to teams,i want it to also cater to me the soloist with little time to afford.Point is that it is what it is ,in this case a RPG,a role playing experience is basically an extension of something that pretends to be REAL even if using a Fantasy setting.

Realistic means having to plant and care for crops, just as you would in real life.It also means spending time to gather resources ,just as in real life.Ok i'll stop typing lol, point is these are RPG's not single player games, too bad MOST devs don't even understand it.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

My recommendation would be to save up now. The full release of the game is when things like your progress in the game will matter. Right now in it's current form, the game is not the main servers, and they have the right to wipe the servers at any time if they need to.

Basically this game is time hungry. The more time you spend, the more advancement you can achieve. There are caps to some of this advancement though. The labor points is an example. Subscribe and you get x amount per day. Play for free and you get less amount and it adds up only when online.

So basically you can limit yourself until release since there is no true advantage to be had on pre-release.

Once the game goes live, hopefully you can plunk down $$ for a new laptop with enough power to play it comfortably. That is my advice if I were in your shoes, since it sounds like you want the house, farm, etc. I think you have to pay a small sum like rent to keep your house and farm going per week as well. If you fail to make a payment the house will go away and any items left behind are openly lootable and someone can then purchase that land spot for a house for themselves. So if your goal is home ownership, you will need to put in the time to at least make the rent for it.

It depends on what you want to achieve, its kind of a broad question. I think even the most hardcore players will have a hard time achieving the best gear in this game, after having played around with the higher level crafting quite a bit.

Yes. After playing AA for more then 3 month, i'm finding it casual friendly.
