Wow, I have to admit the amount of people that wanna nitpick what the OP wrote as well as fight over HIS opinion. I would suggest anyone who has an issue with it, make your own review so we can read what you think, the more reviews the community has, the easier other players can decide whether its a game to try or not.
If someone puts an opinion out there then they should expect to be challenged on it. No one has a bullet proof platform.
I assuredly will be giving a review at some point from a non burned out and less cynical perspective, but I will do so after I have played the game for an appreciable amount of time, and I will talk about more than it's pretty standard PvE quest system.
But don't worry, I won't be expecting you to ride to my defence when I do, mainly because you are likely not to agree with what I have to say.
A 'good review' to a lot of people is just one that they agree with after all.
And yet you praise Eso and that game suffers from all the things you claim to dislike about AA. Can anyone really take you seriously or not see this as a stealth troll thread, are you really in alpha if so I'll meet you in game.
Translation: "I think you're stupid. Wanna fight?"
OP, some of your views about the game ring true with my own, however, I'm still leaning on sticking with it for now. But as you've said, it's a subjective thing. Unfortunately, some people translate subjective opinions as a direct assault on the size of their member and want to get violent over it. (see above).
Wow, way to take what the guy said and 'translate' it into what you want him to be saying.
I understood it to be him asking to meet the OP in game to check his credentials. I actually think that it's valid, and the OP could easily give a character name and guild (if he has got as far as joining one). I will be doing so when I give my review.
NO ONE suggested 'violence' except you. I think the tactic that you are trying to pull here is extremely weak and manipulative.
Sadly, the themepark aspect of AA is extremely underwhelming,....
Is that surprising for a sandpark?
What good is an open world without meaningful exploration?.....
What about finding those exploration coins or spots to do unsafe farming or set up a base?
I'm a big fan of PvP - but this game seems set up to be all about group PvP.....
I'm guessing most people find that a strong positive.
Then there's the engine itself, which while clearly capable - is just not working for me when it comes to player created content...
Given that everyone wants to play 3D games and not 2D, what sandbox would you say has a better engine?
The world design is also lacking, based on the ~7-8 areas I've seen so far. Not enough to set them apart - and they seem way too empty and sparsely populated with unique content. ....
It has the basic structure of an AMAZING MMO - but the actual content is very, very underwhelming...
If I'm going to live in a world - which, to me, is the ultimate desire to have in an MMO, the world itself has to be compelling....
Isn't the whole point of the "sparse content" to allow players to fill it up themselves?

I predict lots of people will play AA and then stop playing it. I know it's a revelation and all, but I had to make a post about it just in case the obvious wasn't so obvious. I'll even go out on a limb and make the same prediction for Wildstar. And although I am late to the table, yes, I will even state the same for ESO... and Rift... and SWTOR... and WoW... and... gee, I see a pattern here...
There is no NDA on it. While it is alpha, here in the west, it has been in release for over a year in Korea. There is really nothing about the game that can be hidden at this point.
Also, quit nitpicking the guy because he doesn't agree with your assessment of the game, the way you come off, like you are trying to make him "wrong" is lame and exactly the type of fanboyism that people are talking about.
I'm challenging him because it sounds like no game can make him happy.
If you can't acknowledge the faults of the game, how would it ever improve? Its lame that you took a statement he made about having open world dungeons adding flavor to the feel of the world, and tried to rebuttal it with "oh, well you can plant stuff in hidden corners, and get tears for finding secrets"
As for the third point, I didn't feel he was condemning the whole 3D genre as a whole, but instead Archeages limited close range draw problem that is not only listed on this forum in multiple places, but all over any Archeage forum you go to. Almost every user that has posted has agreed that if there is one huge issue with the engine, its the draw method they use of streaming in textures on the fly causing you to have issues where things pop in all around you. As the OP mentioned he understands why they went this route, because of the player additions to cloaks/houses/sails, but he wasn't happy with it. How is that talking down about the whole 3d genre? Why, because he mentioned another game that had this type of player additions went the 2d route?
Well if he "understands" the decision, then giving it thumbs down is giving thumbs down to all 3d sandboxes with user imported content, right?
You do it again with your last statement. He isn't saying he doesn't want a sandbox, he is saying that he doesn't want an open world sandbox where the only real thing across the landscape is large housing areas of the same house replicated over and over again in thrown in system. At least with SWG the player house was made into cities that had reasons to go to them over others. Archeage doesn't. Its random, no house has any reason for you to check it out other the others unless your family owns it and has access to a crafting station you don't... There isn't enough sandbox items and decorations to make each house unique so instead you get loads of "suburbs" with mcmansions.
So... he was the sandbox content to be less "cookie cutter" yet is complaining about the "pop" from user content... see the problem?

No I don't see the problem with his post, I see you doing exactly what I said you were. Taking his opinion and putting your own flavor to what he said so you have something to nitpick like a child /shrug. Fanboys are the worst thing for this industry, why? Because it never pushes developers to expand past their current limitations because of all the fairy dust love waving around in the air and attacks on anyone who thinks there is room for improvement.
Here is a hint. Him not liking the game and posting a review won't stop people from playing at launch since its f2p unless you want to farm or build housing. What it does do is give those who are on the fence a post to look at and decide for themselves if they want to spend 150 dollars on alpha. If you feel his review is so wrong, post the "right" opinion up for all to clamor over big guy.

Awesome .... could you pick some Lottery numbers for me ? ....
Can you have a NDA on a game thats been in release for over a year ?
There is no NDA. Trion dropped the NDA weeks ago. There are thousands of UTube vids on Archeage, even the Trion Alpha version. Popular streamers are playing it every day, some of the most popular with 12000+ viewers.
In conclusion, whatever the OP is trying to say here, seems not to be shared by a lot of people.
You can please some MMO-players all of the time and you can please all MMO-players some of the time but you can't please all MMO-players all of the time.

I have been waiting for this game since last summer when I was playing Age of Wushu. I have to admit, I have stated here and on other boards, that I am very apprehensive on this game since the inclusion of all these themepark features. Especially with the OP meantioning the icons over peoples heads and especially all the quests. I was hoping for something more akin to the Age of Wushu type game, where quests were more of a sought after activity rather then the main leveling option.
Then again those were hopes and we all know, especially in games, that hopes are never what ya get. I am definitely wrried for the state of this game, but I am still excited to try, just not $150 excited. I suppose I will try for open beta whenever that happens, but still worried that it is getting WAY to themeparkish, but time will tell at this point.
If they could add in anything that would help me get excited about the game, OW Dungeons would be a good one, or remove a portion of the quests, best things I can think of, but hard to say on quests till I really get my hands on it.
Good Review, I know how ya feel with todays MMO's OP.
Have to lol at posts like this, this is an mmorpg forum is it not ? ... of course people are going to nitpick ...sigh.

But I never said his review was "wrong", I just pointed out that it sounds like there is no game he could like at this point. If that is in fact the case, then "those who are on the fence" should consider that.

Indeed. The OP states that he is a MMORPG burn out, and that he hasn't played much.
Anyone who let's an opinion coming from that place influence them (or reinforce their existing opinion) is... Well, let us leave it at that.
I find it sad that players are able to give up on a game and judge it before they even can experience what makes Archeage unique. Leaving before you sail the seas with your own ship, experience all that is trading (risk vs reward), stake claim and own your own land/home.farm, etc, etc ,etc. These players will never know what AA is or can be without experiencing these things.
Sounds to me that either the OP isn't interested in sandbox games and prefers themepark gameplay or the OP gave up before getting to experience any sand.
Do yourself a favor, if you are intrigued by AA sandbox features, when you play it for the first time don't just do the same things you have always done in MMO's. As soon as level 10, you can start building, sailing, farming, trading. No need to wait, no need to get on the themepark treadmill if you are there for the sand. Don't wait, then form your conclusion.

TY, I mean why can't people actually judge things for themselves.... If your interested try it, if your not don't, not really that hard.
I don't understand why people have to constantly try and get people to either love or hate a game based on word of mouth......
sorry but even me, who i dont like much AA and i wont even spend 50$ to get into betas, i find half of your statements false.
but these you seek are elements of themeparks ...
except the solo PvP, which i dunno why you failed on that ... prolly you didnt got the shadow path, otherwise without that you wont have a chance alone !
but yes this games looks uninspiring in terms of graphics and its stuck to outdated combat, but ok their innovations and strong points are on housing, sailing, open world pvp, trading, in game community mechanics. So when you come to judge it, judge based on these terms.

Shit my english seems bad
I'm afraid I can't agree.
When I give my opinion about a game, I like to talk about both the good things and the bad things - and then conclude from that.
What you're suggesting makes absolutely no sense to me, but thank you for contributing.
Then there's the engine itself, which while clearly capable - is just not working for me when it comes to player created content. Due to the unpredictable nature of player content - the engine has to load it moments before you're upon it, which creates massive pop-ups all over the place. This is jarring and not at all immersive. One advantage of Ultima Online was the tilebased 2D image approach, which meant everything was in memory and rarely "popped up" as such.
UO DID Have loading on objects and buildings, you could easily run fast enough to outpace the loading and watch as things popped up...
Did you forget?
We were on 56k modems, if we were lucky, the internet ran slower all around, yes UO had loading on objects, dear god it did.
This really invalidates your statements to me, just how wholly inaccurate this paragraph is.

I played UO with a 28.8k connection and I do not remember anything of the sort.
I agree with most if not all the things the OP posted. Good underlying systems but the whole just isnt very good. I continue to play to get deeper into crafting but it is getting pretty difficult to get past the poor world design.

This is partially AA's fault. Its first 10 levels are awful. They go fast, but its painful to get through.

Do you understand the difference between never and rarely? I said rarely.
The only reason it had pop-ups was if the server was being hammered - or your connection wasn't smooth. That had nothing to do with player-created content - as everything could be delayed in that way, because it was using a tilebased engine with a limited tileset.
It's fine that you consider everything I said invalid because you don't understand the distinction between an engine limitation and latency or server capacity, but it sort of sounds like you're desperately trying to invalidate an opinion you don't like.
