Elder Scrolls Online: The Road Ahead Announced

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Elder Scrolls Online site has been updated with a fantastic new letter that lays out the team's plans for the game throughout the balance of 2014. First, the details of the latest patch are laid out followed by some interesting tidbits about what's in store.

Along with fixing bugs, combatting black market gold farmers, and balance tweaks, we have a long list of features and updates we’re working on that will be coming throughout 2014 and beyond. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s coming up. For most of these, we don’t know yet which update they’ll be in, but they’re under active development right now:

  • A system that allows grouped players to see each other even when they’re in different phases

  • A justice system—steal from and kill NPCs and deal with the consequences if you are caught

  • Migration of European Megaserver to our European datacenter.

  • Field of View (FOV) adjustment

  • Armor dyeing and tinting

  • Two new Veteran Dungeons: Crypt of Hearts and City of Ash

  • New region of Craglorn with a new Trial (the Serpent)

  • Increased ability to pick up items in the world

  • Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood storyline and quests.

  • Spellcrafting

  • Horse Racing

  • Dragonstar Arena—similar  to Trials, but built for a group of four

  • Improvements to fishing

  • Crafting system improvements

  • Improved Looking for Group system

  • Better NPC facial animations

  • Guild functionality updates: guild store interface updates, customizable guild insignias, tabards, and guild ranks, and Guild Kiosks—guild stores open to everyone that are available to the highest-bidding guild.

  • Auto-leveling dungeons that level to your group leader

  • Awards when you repeat dungeons

  • Imperial City PvP dungeon

Some good stuff on there although I feel most of it should have been available at launch.

They need to hurry with the EU server migration though, it becomes almost unplayable at times.

Did they say spellcrafting? Did they just say spellcrafting?  Cause I think they said spellcrafting. I'm pretty sure I'm going to hyperventilate and pass out right now.

Okay, those are just hopeful changes, and that's an awesome list, I really would like to see everything on it come to fruition.

I'm sorry to be "that guy", but because those are so awesome features, i have to say it: Many fo those should have been there at launch. Specially the EU megaserver being in europe. It's great that ZOS is trying, but why do these things only come "later down the road" when some fo those are so important, like seeing other players because phasing?

BTW, knew it. PVP dungeon in the Imperial City. Never played DAOC, but it seems like it's going to be like Darkness Falls.

Five free days is a smart move. It gives them time to win a few people over before they unsub. Hopefully they can.

Nice to see the 5 extra days added to the "free month" as compensation for all the server downtimes to date... image

ESO is a huge game based on a major IP, I can only see it getting bigger and better as time goes by. Teething troubles will be outgrown, and then the game will truly shine.

Looking forward to many more months of great adventuring in Tamriel !

The phasing fix is a must have. I understand the purpose of the phasing but it has been a hassle gaming with friends with this system. Glad it will get a work over. The justice system sounds interesting but what are the consequences? Jail time? A fine? Death? As for the armor dye, I hope the game remains realistic and not become a variation of WoW with the loud colors.

What is spellcrafting? Being able to mix different spells to create a new one?

As a pvp player I am  looking forward to the Imperial City PvP.

It is also nice to see they are clamping down on the bots who camp the public dungeon bosses. This was the one thing that nearly caused me to log off and return weeks later.

Looks like a nice list of improvements, fixes and additions. Looking to be playing ESO for a long time.

All this tells me is that the game needed another 12 months to bake - they shoved it out the door early. Half this stuff should have been in at launch. And then they use it as a carrot to hold on to subs, after a shaky launch and mediocre reception - just on the sub renewal time. Hmmm.

Not that it's a silly move - I'd probably do the same. But given the claims they made before launch, and the what actually happened, I would be incredibly wary.

If they can pull this off,  they have a solid mmo.

[mod edit] Sorry seeing is believing, this is just another attempt at damage control. Most of this should have been in the game already.

EU megaservers in europe is probably something you should have had at launch.

The more carrots the better, yeh?  Like a few others have already said, most of that should have been in launch.  At least for me I wouldn't be as critical towards the game IF those features actually make it in.  Specially by the end of 2014 like they say.  Lets see what they break or push back date wise as they try to implement this stuff.

I have a feeling that if this announcement doesn't help with attrition then it's going to put plan B into motion.  Assuming they planned far enough ahead with contingencies.

Ever since release Im between "buy asap" and "no better wait" on a daily basis. I didnt play the game much, only beta, but I really really liked it. The problem is that they have stuff like the EU server...not in the EU. Why have an EU server if it isn't in the EU? Now reading all these things they want to do, dont get me wrong, they sound great on "paper" but like Panzerbase says, the timing is a bit too perfect. I do not doubt they will add those things but the "beyond" part is making me a bit nervous.

For the sole reason, that this is all they want to add 2014-2015/16 and that is the planned time table. Now looking at how long it took them to fix the dupe and other bugs, people stuck for 3 weeks in the main story aso, I doubt they can hold up to it. And having a game promise a really cool feature 1-2 years from now wouldnt keep me subbed. So the whole candy looks good but I guess I'll have to wait at least a year to taste it. Or simpler: I buy it when I see it ingame.

    dont be so harsh!

they didnt heard about this little place called 'yurop'.

    imagine:

    'Nick, Nick!'

    'Yes? What is it?'

'Nick, you are not goint to belive this! They found another continent!'

'Is that so? That's quite astonishing! Have they named it yet?'

'Certenly! They call it "Yoo-ropp"; after some local vegetable it think. What should we do about it Nick?"

'... I have a brilliant idea, whats never crossed anyone's mind in human history...'

    '...Well, what is it?'

'Lets put a server park on it!'

    '......'

    'Wow! Thats brilliant!'

'It's quite indeed, thank you, but we must hurry before others think of it aswell!'

EVERY new MMO that has launched had posts that say "should have been in at launch". Even WoW had those posts when it first launched.  To those posts, ignored.

I'm still waiting out for more PVE content for the casual player. So far in the reviews and youtube vids, I've seen it's mostly PVP content. I'll resub if i see more PVE content after level 20.

  • VrikaVrika Member LegendaryPosts: 7,949

Has anyone seen any more news about the European datacenter?

It was promised to follow "after the initial launch phase is over", and now they are just grouping it up with other goals that will come this year or in the future. If this is really the best ESO devs can do for their European customers, then I feel this game does not deserve to exists.

This is quite an odd statement.

Are you sure you are referring to ESO?

"2014 and beyond". What is pretty much a wildcard to pull a "wotlk dance studio" on the customers.

Great list and covers a lot of the problems players have been upset about. I hope they can pull it off.

And we certainly know what Plan B is, do I dare say it..... nah the drones will be out and I have little patience today. But in seriousness, I've seen this before, sales are slow, so next we start seeing the BIG LIST of wonder and fancy. Again seeing is believing and I don't pay for hopes and dreams. My time and money is valuable and I'm not here to speculate on the future, rather I want something that is in good working order and can satisfy my gaming needs, ESO is not it.
