I recently watched the newly-released video on H1Z1 and I could not be more saddened. I had high hopes - big studio, lots of talent and resources, and surely they could understand what a zombie survival game needs to be and get us there.
Wow, was I wrong.
This is just a DayZ wanna-be. Just a stupid open world PvP gank fest, with no true survival game mechanics and where zombies rate below mosquitos in term of threat.
I see what's coming: I spawn as a new survivor. I take a foot step. BAM! I've been hit by a sniper 2.5 miles away - perfect shot, middle of my forehead. Just for good measure, the bullet does fusion & fission damage over time. The sniper is wearing camo'ed, obsidian, titanium, head-to-foot armor. And just to make the whole experience suck even more, this sniper (and his buddies) have managed to get this weaponry and armor, even though the game's only be available to everyone for 2 days.

I want The Walking Dead MMO.
I want a game where a great day is finding a can opener that works.
I want a game where an aluminum bat is worth 100x an assault rifle, because a bat kills silently and doesn't get stuck in a zombie's head. Fire a gun and you get 1,000 zombies on you in minutes.
I want a game where I can take a hacksaw, a foot-long piece of PVC pipe, duct tape, and from that update the forearm part of a leather coat to make it bite-proof.
I want a game that recognizes that if I hole-up in a two-story house and have de-constructed the staircase to the 2nd floor, that I am pretty safe from zombies and can rest a bit.
I want a game where all the clothing is torn, ripped, and stained. Where all men have beards and everyone's hair is long and stringy.
I want to see lots of burned out and breaking-down buildings. I want to come upon a stream and wonder if the water is safe to drink - did they shut down the nearby nuclear plant in time?
--------------------------------
It looks like I will keep waiting for that game. It doesn't seem like SOE's H1DayZ1 is it.
Sigh.

What video did you watch?

guns are super rare as stated.
You want a game where everybody is Rick Grimes, and people don't find rifles and protective gear and don't shoot at you and take your stuff.
Doesn't sound like Walking Dead.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Try Project Zomboid, it ain't that graphically advanced and it is still very much WIP but it may be exactly what you want though you start off at the beginning of the outbreak so not as post-apocalyptic yet though player made maps probably will fix that and they have MP in so you can get that Walking Dead vibe going with friends . Look it up on steam and you can also find some lets plays on youtube ^^ (btw not an ad, just so you have something to chew on while we wait to see how H1Z1 pans out).
I also hope this is more a cooperative survival game than yet another Team Fortress death match with zombies in the background.
It makes no sense that if humanity has been pushed to the brink of extinction by zombies, those left will spend all their time hunting and killing other humans on sight.
Frankly, if that's the case why not root for the zombies to put this miserable self-destructive species to an end?
"Where zombies rate below mosquitos in term of threat."
Interesting statement. Considering the fact that mosquitos are credited for so many deaths upon the human race through diseases spread by none other than mosquitos.
That's a high, hard, and devastatingly heavy bar to reenact.
I agree im very disappointed in H1z1 and i have stopped going to the reddit since there apparently everyone just wants another DayZ clone. I want an MMORPG Suvival Horror that doesn't forget the RPG part.
I want character progression of some sort
I want either a harsh penalty against those that PK or a PVE server (with some consensual PVP)
i want the crafting of SWG with the complexity and interdependancy it bring, with the skill trees, so not everyone can be a rambo-macgyver-Dr. House-Survivorman ... with the ability to create massive homes and the most advanced weapons.
I want Zombies to be the main threat of the game, so much so that even on PVP servers they would have to work together in order to survive. after all this is a survival horror game and not a deathmatch with zombies in the background.
In a response to all the negativity about how this will be a deathmatch... I feel the need to point out giga1000's post. They already stated that guns will be extremely rare.... they could be lying, but assuming they arn't I don't see how this will be a shoot em up.
being a deathmatch has nothing to do with how rare guns will be.

Have you watched any zombie movies or shows? Look at The Walking dead. Humans and Zombies are things to look out for. In the Zombie world Zombies isnt the worst thing like with all other genres. Zombie genre is about the inner struggles of a person not the disaster itself.
If you and your family is going hungry and you spot someone with food who wont share what do you do? Walk away and let your family die? Or do you attack him to survive?
In an open world PvP game? Oh yeah, that will never, ever happen. <laughs>
Ahhh gotcha. I didn't read the post above yours.
^ see what he did there?
The OP is right!
A few changes and this game could be epic -intead Smed is overexcited about making this what he calls 'hard-core' to the point of exclusion of all MMO elements that could make this game fun - NOT arcadey - but FUN.
> A little character progression.
> Some skills - WHY NOT skills??? I don't see the issue with this.
What they currently plan to release will be no more than a niche deathmatch game.
They are playing too much to the Dayz mob - instead they should be playing to the sandbox MMO crowd.

In all fairness, what they've revealed so far doesn't sound very promising, but perhaps you are correct the final release usually turns out better than we first expect.
Oh wait... nevermind, that' isn't really the case now is it?

So pretty much like DayZ stand alone except without the servers that can't even re-spawn items?
----
Sorry, but DayZ is not even a finished game yet. It's nothing but a neat concept with too many bugs and missing features. If it ever becomes a proper game with polish we can discuss how it is different from game X. Until then i would not even mention DayZ in any serious discussion.

At least H1Z1 has a proven highly scaleable and performant multiplayer open world engine as opposed to the trash that is the ARMA 2.5 Engine DayZ stand alone uses.
